Talk to me about curl cream

My hair is pretty curly / wavy but I normally blow dry it straight as it's easier and I struggle to make my curls look good. It blow dries straight easily and stays that way unless it gets humid. It's not naturally fully tight spiral curls or anything - just messy curlyish wavy European hair.

On days when I do attempt curls I use leave in conditioner on wet hair and twiddle hair around my fingers. This works ok I suppose.

Hairdresser recommended curl cream. I did try this when I was very young but recall it gave a "wet" look, which I don't fancy. Is this the case or is the product different nowadays?

If you have curly / wavy European hair like me, do you use curl cream and how to you style it?

Is your hair European or Mediterranean?

My hair is northern european wavy and my hair stylist recommended either using a tiny amount regular conditioner or conditioner mixed with hair gel.

ILoveShula · 17/06/2021 11:13

Forgot - hairstylist said scrunch the conditioner or gel/conditioner into the curls.

I sometimes use salt water spray - various ranges make it .

You scrunch out the wet look curls, but when your hair actually dry

QwertyGirly · 17/06/2021 11:20

There are so many on the market it depends on your budget. Higher budget: Bumble and Bumble products. Budget: pink curling cream from Boots. I have very thick curly/wavy hair and I use hair gel www.boots.com/umberto-giannini-curl-jelly-scrunching-jelly-mini-10243327?cm_mmc=bmm-buk-google-ppc--PLAs--(GB:Whoop!)+Umberto+Giannini-_-(GB:Whoop!)+Boots+Shopping+-+Category+-+Beauty+-+Desktop&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6OmT4Lie8QIVGp3VCh13pQRsEAQYASABEgKHBfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I also have wavy hair and will generally use a small amount of curl cream or curl mousse on wet hair, followed by a small amount of gel so it holds as it dries. I then diffuse it dry and scrunch it a bit to break the up cast that you get from the gel, so it doesn’t look crunchy.

My hair is mostly naturally curly, wavy in some areas. I use leave in conditioner which seems to define the curls well if I have slightly longer hair. At the moment, I am using curl cream, but it does leave your hair in a slightly "wet look" appearance if I use a lot. The best thing for my hair is the salt water spray - it defines really well - I sometimes use this as well as the leave in conditioner.
The main things for me are - never brush or comb - only use fingers. I put the product in, when my hair is fairly wet - just slightly drier than dripping wet - and "comb" through with my fingers. Then leave. I don't own a hairdryer. Oh, and I never rub with a towel.
I suppose it depends on the texture of your hair too as to what looks best.

I really rate the boots curl cream mentioned above, it’s super cheap and I find it quite hydrating. I also use the umberto giannini gel which is fab!

QwertyGirly · 17/06/2021 11:22

Just seen that the Boots curl creme has been discontinued and is selling for £30 on ebay....so maybe not!

This one is quite good www.boots.com/john-frieda-frizz-ease-dream-curls-curl-defining-cr%C3%A9me-150ml-for-curly-hair-10261163

I use cantu curl cream and then cantu custard as a gel. When my hair is completely dry I scrunch out the cast and it doesn't look wet at all. I think the cream helps it curl and the gel then protects it as it dries in the curled /waved shape.

It's a learning process and I'm very much at the beginning but I've found I need a small amount of the cream, mixed with water and on very wet hair, then a large amount of the gel. Following curly hair groups on Facebook has taught me that the important factors for which products work are the density, texture and porosity of the hair, more than curl type.

I am looking for a recco too for my type 2 B wavy Indian hair. I want to define the curls and cut down on frizz. @PaleGreenGhost Is this the Cantu curl cream you use? www.boots.com/cantu-moisturising-curl-activator-cream-10224679

PaleGreenGhost · 17/06/2021 12:35

It is! And I only use a kidney bean sized amount each time (hair longish & very thick) so it works out very good value. My hair is very dry, frizzy, coarse and porous and seems to like it.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 17/06/2021 12:37

I use the Lush one. It smells great and works really well once you’ve scrunched it into towel dried hair.

MareofBeasttown · 17/06/2021 12:41

Thanks. I am not really a full Curly Girl person, but I have adopted some of the techniques. Plopping my hair in an old tshirt rather than drying it with a towel has really helped reduce frizz.

OnOldOlympus · 17/06/2021 12:58

Just seen that the Boots curl creme has been discontinued Noooo! Sad

Fkrkrodps · 17/06/2021 17:03

I would be surprised if the Boots creme is being discontinued. Have Boots confirmed it? Sorry if I’ve missed that in the thread. I’ve been using Boots curl creme for nearly 20 years and every so often there’s a ‘discontinued’ scare and it always reappears. I’m still sad about their purple gel going. I agree that Umberto Giannini jelly is good.

I put a small amount of curl creme in when my hair is soaking wet and then put gel in. I scrunch with a tshirt or microfibre towel. Annoyingly, curly/wavy hair is often a lot of trial and error.

Boogiewoody · 17/06/2021 18:13

My favourite curl cream is Noughty Wave hello. Its about £7

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 17/06/2021 18:17

I like orange marmalade, its a curn definer, and snot, that's a gel. Like PP have said, your hair will dry crispy, thats ok. Wait until its fully dry, then scrunch out the crunch. It stops it looking wet and feeling crispy!

PerditaNitt · 17/06/2021 19:34

There are quite a few online videos (tik tok and YouTube) on the denman d7 brush, which you use with curl cream to get good results. Hair needs to be very wet, apply a small amount of curl cream (I use cantu because it smells lovely) and scrunch each section after you comb it though with the denman. Very good results

DeadCertain · 17/06/2021 20:06

I use Cantu curl cream followed with a generous amount of very cheap Alberto Balsam gel, wait until dry and then scrunch out the crunchiness.
