Silicone-filled shampoo & conditioner wanted!

Frolickingfoam · 15/06/2021 20:27

I've tried every non-silicone shampoo under the sun for the last two years and my hair is just not nice. It feels coarse, it gets greasy quickly no matter what I do. So I figure I should just go back to using silicones to make my hair shinier. And maybe use a clarifying shampoo once a week.

Recommendations for shampoos and conditioners please!

Dove or elvive are good

garnier banana or watermelon ones are fab too but they might be silicone free.

I like Aussie, Dove, Herbal Essences and Pantene.

Try ones from the Cien range in Lidl, or the Boots ones that are about 75p, or Alberto Balsam. I like Herbal Essence - the lime green one for shiny hair.

Do you use enough shampoo? If you are in a hard water area, you might need more. Wash your comb and brush often.

I'm no convinced that conditioner does much other than add 'stuff' to clean hair.

Good suggestions, thanks. And cheap! All my sulphate silicone free ones are so expensive...

I do live in a hard water area but I use loads of shampoo. I double cleanse too. I do find I need conditioner or else my hair gets mega static

I've been trying the sulfate and silicone free ones when I've spotted them in the clearance section. Love a bargain, me.

I like the ethique bar - it's the sweet and spicy one. I bought two (50p each in Boots as short dated) and gave the other away and the recipient has reported positively too.
I also have Avalon Organics conditioner (peppermint) on the go and really like it.
I think the Herbal Essences one is s&s free, and I like it.

I tried an ogx one (bamboo) and didn't like it. I used it up and had only paid about 75p for it in superdrug clearance shelf. I would not buy it again. It made my hair limp.

Of the s&s-free ones I've tried that I liked, my hair has felt thicker and wavier. I don't do curly girl. My guess is that they lock in humidity, or add something to the hair, so I use a normal (cheap) shampoo every few days.

I live in a hard water area so use lots of shampoo. When I washed my hair a lot, and never used conditioner, I used a gentle shampoo (Timotei or a normal hair regular use one). Regardless of any conditioner I have tried my hair always splits easily and is brittle, probably due to nutrition. I never really got on with the 2-in-1 shampoos. If I want to so a 'hair mask treatment' I use castor oil (very gloopy and sticky or coconut oil. Both leave hair feeling nice and are available in my local £1 shop.

Forgot to add, I don't apply shampoo twice when I wash my hair. Surely that is just a way to use up twice as much shampoo as I need to.

BlueBellsArePretty · 16/06/2021 22:57

Don't put shampoo straight from the bottle onto your hair Pour it into your hands and really work it into a foam, getting rid of any gel texture, before applying.

Frolickingfoam · 17/06/2021 12:20

That's an interesting tip, not heard that before. What does it do?

I was the same as you op. I now use herbal essences and my hair looks and feels better. I don’t have to wash as much either because it doesn’t get greasy as quick.

Blessex · 17/06/2021 12:27

Tresemme keratin smooth. Cannot go wrong.

Sulphates to clean your hair properly. Sulfate free formulations don’t clean as efficiently which is why the hair goes dull and greasy. Also look at the chemicals they add in to replace the sulphates!!! It’s all a marketing gimmick.

Silicones to make the cuticles of the hair smooth and shiny.

I have no idea why people want to use sulfate and silicone free shampoo!! Hopefully the tide will turn again.

The red L'Oréal
Lovely

QuestionableMouse · 17/06/2021 12:37

Pantane repair and protect. Gives me lovely shiny manageable hair.

Or herbal essences bourbon and honey. Not quite as nice hair but it smells amazing.

ashmts · 17/06/2021 12:40

Coco and Eve Like a Virgin hair mask is great. It's sulfate-free but has silicones in it. Smells amazing and leaves my hair so soft and shiny (and it was damaged from bleaching). I just use it as conditioner but you can leave it on overnight if hair needs more moisture. I think that would make my roots too greasy though.

BlueBellsArePretty · 17/06/2021 17:11

That's an interesting tip, not heard that before. What does it do?

It reduces the chance of shampoo build up on your hair and makes it easier to rinse your hair x

Thanks @BlueBellsArePretty

Thanks for the other suggestions. Absolutely happy about all of these cos I could probably try them all for the same price as one bottle of aveda 😂
