What basics do you use?

User1110 · 15/06/2021 17:01

What do you use, basics wise? Like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion?

I am trying to cut back costs generally and think I need to curb my spending on these sorts of things in order to. So any suggestions would be great!

At the moment I am using a lot of Caudalie, Kerastase (does not work Angry), have all sorts of expensive lotions and potions but thinking i should just scale it back and find a few reasonably priced products and stick with them!

Check out Simple stuff.

Postdatedpandemic · 15/06/2021 17:04

ORS olive oil shampoo, www.boots.com/ors-olive-oil-aloe-shampoo-370m-10085997 generally don't even need to bother with conditioner after it, and I have mad curly hair.

JinglingHellsBells · 15/06/2021 17:43

It's all very personal but I swap between a medium range cleanser (Clinique or Ren) and a supermarket 'simple' own brand. (£2!)

For moisturiser, I used to pay £30-£40 for Clinique, Estee Lauder etc but find Olay very decent especially the Regenerist range, bought online for half the price.

I like Aussie hair products but know not everyone does.
Or Garnier. In all honesty I can't tell any difference between dirt cheap and pricy hair stuff, as long as they don't make my scalp itchy.

Shower gel I get Ren or M Brown as gifts that last all year.

Body lotion- Neutrogena, Aveeno or Garnier.

PurpleyBlue · 15/06/2021 19:04

Aveeno body lotion
Sanex shower gel
Garnier or Herbal Essence Shampoo and Conditioner (usually)

It takes getting used too but I've just treated myself to some Kerastase and it means I can really enjoy the luxury feeling now. It doesn't make much of a difference but then treats feel more special.

PurpleyBlue · 15/06/2021 19:05

Oh and Body shop vitamin e moisturiser. Much cheaper than what I previously used and I don't notice much difference.

ledlight · 15/06/2021 19:11

I use any shampoo as my hair always looks the same whatever I use. Also I use any old cheap bar soap and use baby lotion as a body moisturiser.

I'm more fussy about my face and use Clarins hydraquench range which I love. I'm under no illusions that it makes any difference though.

CheerfulBunny · 15/06/2021 19:12

I really rate OGX shampoo and conditioner, it's revolutionised the condition of my hair and you can usually pick it up on offer for £5 apiece or less. No more sticky build up.
Bizarrely I've ditched foaming facial cleanser for Johnson's baby shampoo. It started because I need to wash my dry eyes with it twice a day and found I actually prefer it, being less drying. It's also dead cheap and lasts ages.

PurpleyBlue · 15/06/2021 19:16

I have a massive pump bottle of cetaphil to wash my face with. Very gentle and good value if you get the massive bottle.

BasicMadeira · 15/06/2021 19:19

I think start basic and stop when you get to a level you are comfortable with. Anything to clean my body will be washed off I don't spend money on, so for showering I use dove soap (less plastic too) garnier shampoo bar (camomile smells delish) and a Aussie conditioner. I alternate with a fancier shampoo/ conditioner for blonde hair (whatever Boots has on offer) to help the brassiness of highlights.

Face wise I use Liz Earle cleanse and polish as it's makes a difference to my skin if I stop using it. A facial wash for the shower and second cleanse (ideally non foaming) but also whatever's on offer. I always use pixie toner and pestle and mortar recover eye cream as they are the best for me (and I have tried cheaper and dearer as these are products I need to work). Rose hip oil from trilogy on alt nights with no 7 retinol advanced serum (recent buy but I am hugely impressed) then to finish off Aldi caviar day and night cream.
Deodorant is Mitchum always powder fresh. Hair is always L'Oréal elive extraordinary oil (straight hair but needs a little finishing hold/ gloss)
Foundation is Ester Lauder Double wear and Benefit blusher but all else is subject to change depending on what I fancy and budget. Oh, soap and glory mother pucker lip gloss too!

Suzi888 · 15/06/2021 19:25

Shower gel - Sanex
Cleanser - Liz Earle makes a difference to my skin
Moisturiser - No7 factor 50
Exfoliater- no 7
Sure deodorant
Also like “your good skin” boots range

ChiaraMontague · 15/06/2021 19:42

I swapped REN and Clinique cleaners and Clinique moisturiser for Cetaphil (due to rosacea issues around Xmas ) and my skin feels is so much healthier! (As is my bank balance)

namcybotwinbloom · 15/06/2021 19:54

Soap - dove
Shower gel - whatever is on offer
Moisturiser- I have creme de la mer. It's just like the old original Nivea to me. It hasn't made any difference. I usually refill the pot with Nivea but I dropped it last week and cracked the lid. I like the pot. Better than the content.

I don't use anything else on my face.

Thighdentitycrisis · 15/06/2021 19:59

Sainsbury’s coconut conditioner is brilliant for my hair - 75p!

Inthesameboatatmo · 15/06/2021 20:05

Aldi unscented body lotions good as are the face creams and face wash.

CommanderBurnham · 15/06/2021 20:09

1000ml bottles of fancy shampoo are sooooo much cheaper. I think you can buy most of kerastase in that size. About £45

User1110 · 15/06/2021 20:41

Thanks for your recommendations all!

@PurpleyBlue by getting used to, do you mean you used to buy expensive products and scaled down? I like the idea of having nice bits for a treat, maybe to use on a Sunday or something for a pamper!

OP posts:
PurpleyBlue · 15/06/2021 20:53

@User1110 yeah. I found myself spending more and more on "treats" and they stopped being as much of a treat. Having them for Sunday/Saturday sounds a nice idea or I might get something nice if I've managed to meet my savings target.

Bananaman123 · 15/06/2021 22:30

Have a look in tk max as they have the litre bottle of shampoo and conditioner, normally under a tenner.
If I scaled back this would be a rough idea

Mitcham antiperspirant
Aldi hot cloth cleanser or neutrogena cleanser (the blue one)
Neutrogena water gel moistuiser and eye cream
The ordinary niacinimide
For a night treatment too cool for school pumpkin sleep pack (just as good as some of my high end bits)
Shower gel sanex, the sanctuary or soap and glory

LunaTheCat · 16/06/2021 00:41

Cetaphil is a great cleanser - I have a friend who is dermatologist and that’s what she uses 😉.
I use Aveeno as moisturiser body.
I pay for kerastase shampoo as makes a huge difference.

Tangelo · 16/06/2021 01:13

I have super sensitive skin that can’t tolerate any SLS nasties. My new love is Superdrug’s vitamin E exfoliating soap bar. It’s about £3 and I have ditched all other shower gels etc in its favour. Better for the environment and excellent for my skin. Tbh I rate that whole range - while I love a Liz Earle cleanse and polish, the Vit E dupe isn’t half bad

musthavebeenlove · 16/06/2021 01:21

I live overseas but I’ll make a list as for you to get some idea.

Bar soap for body and face (we have one here that has milk as the main ingredient and is recommended even for using to wash babies so very gentle)
SPF instead of moisturizer.
BB cream (local brand)
Mascara (Maybelline)
Eyebrow pencil (local brand)
Lip balm with SPF (local brand)
Razors
Bodylotion /handcream (Nivea)
Shampoo (local brand, I always make sure it’s silicone free)
Hair mask (local brand)
Hair oil (local brand)
Deodorant (8x4)
Night cream (local brand)

Nobranothanks · 16/06/2021 07:06

I use a combination of lots of things I do have problem skin on my face and body though!
Body wash - sanctuary shower oil (always buy when there's money off or 3 for 2)
Body moisturiser - cerave SA and normal cerave on legs
Shampoo - if coloured I use goldwell, if not I use aldi
Face: a mix of LA Roche posay, Estee lauder and kiehls (obviously this doesn't help at all lol)

BikeRunSki · 16/06/2021 07:17

Faith in Nature soap
Nuddy bar shampoo and conditioner

Fferny1 · 16/06/2021 10:01

Marseille liquid soap in the huge bottles in Tk Maxx or Nesti Dante soap from the same place. Aveeno cream oil body lotion. Cerave foam/cream Cleanser.
I use a mixture of shampoos for a sensitive scalp plus Innoluxe Elixir as a leave in conditioner.
