Crocs for garden - sizing, comfort etc

OhRosalind · 13/06/2021 13:53

So they’re neither stylish or beautiful, but they seem like a practical choice for nipping into the garden for me and DC aged 2.

Are they comfy? Do they rub when it’s hot? Can kids run and play in them? How is the sizing? And do I need crocs or will anything similar do?

Just buy cheap ones from Amazon for the garden. You don’t need to buy the branded ones.

Ostryga · 13/06/2021 14:03

Once you wear them in they’re amazing. I’ve had mine for 10 years and still look new. They did rub me raw for a week or two, but I could hike up Everest in them now and my feet would be fine.

Buy your usual size. They are roomy, but they’re meant to be

OhRosalind · 13/06/2021 14:03

Only reason for buying branded would be if they are comfier otherwise cheapo ones are fine.

Cheap ones can be harder plastic and rub. Crocs branded ones don’t run. They are wide. Super comfy. Easy to slip on in the garden. I love mine and I know they are hideous looking. Search about online, always bargains to be had on the real crocs.

ILoveShula · 13/06/2021 14:34

Cheap ones are fine. I think mine came from Aldi or Primark.
I have genuine crocs too.

ILoveShula · 13/06/2021 14:35

Size-wise order your usual size, but they may be marked in American sizes.

Bargebill19 · 13/06/2021 14:44

If you have the money - croc light riders! Or the flip flop type.

On the other hand best note, otherwise I won’t be able to add to my collection. …

Thank you! Off to have a look at prices.

I loved mine for garden, but be careful once you've had them a while, the sole gets worn smooth and no grip, I slipped on paving and smashed my teeth. I wear garden clogs now....like wellies shoes but they can get sweaty

OhRosalind · 14/06/2021 17:49

God @NecklessMumster that sounds horrendous, I hope you’re ok now. I will definitely bear that in mind.

I had a super sexy pair of croc ballet pumps which I used for my morning walk to work- they were extremely comfy, obviously really lightweight and easy to clean.

I keep meaning to do the same as you and get a pair for keeping by the back door for outdoor stuff, but I’m loathe to spend the money!

Bilbymum · 14/06/2021 17:58

Don’t leave them in the sun! I bought crocs for gardening (were great though!) and left them outside, now shrunk probably a full size?! Google it, it’s a thing Sad you can apparently enlarge them again (involves heat and boiling) so I think I’ll just give to MIL.

MirandaMarple · 14/06/2021 18:05

Crocs with holes I find useless in morning dew grass or when camping. So, I bought crocs without holes (fake £6 eBay)

IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld · 14/06/2021 18:10

You might want a rethink, I've kept a pair by the back door for years to run up the garden in (chicken feeding, washing out etc) but choose to wear them this afternoon whilst gardening as I couldn't be bothered to walk through the house to get my boots. The air holes of the crocs caught on a bamboo cane laying slightly sideways and I've fallen over, smashed a tooth grazed my lip/chin, ripped my trousers, knee grazed, wrists aching and feeling like I may have the start of whiplash. Ice packs and Gavi are now making me feel better.

Next time I will behave myself and wear an old pair of DMs like I usually do.

OhRosalind · 14/06/2021 18:17

Ouch @IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld you poor thing! This is turning into a crocs horror stories thread. I definitely don’t want broken teeth.

Bit worried about them shrinking in the sun too, I was hoping to leave them outside. My mum has had garden clogs for years and they always seemed super practical, I thought crocs were a modern, lighter alternative but maybe they’re not the answer after all!

Don’t ever leave shoes outside. Shoes left outside are crack cocaine to foxes.

Yep, I think I would recommend you get some mini shoe/boot welly type things for regular garden use, far less chance of injury/wet feet and definitely more stylish than stupid giant foam shoes (yes, I'm bitter now...Grin)
Bargebill19 · 14/06/2021 18:26

I use a pair of oxypas for gardening. More flexible than garden clogs. Seem to be strimmer proof.
Crocs are more everyday wear. Nipping to the bins etc.

ILoveShula · 14/06/2021 18:48

I've been wearing them for years and apart from occasional soggy feet have had no mishaps. They are great for going to the beach as they can be rinsed clean and offer more protection than flip flops.

wonkylegs · 14/06/2021 19:20

I had some fab gardening clogs from home bargains that were def not fashionable but great for nipping in and out of the house and doing gardening - they died and I got some jules welly clogs for Christmas which are great and have better grip in the mud. www.joules.com/Women/All-Womens-Footwear/Pop-On/Printed-Welly-Clogs?size=Adult-3&id=212648|NAVBLSSPOT|3
The kids have proper crocs but always complain that their feet get wet on dewy grass
