Has anyone ever completely overhauled their wardrobe?

Has anyone ever done this? Did you have any regrets?

I'm thinking I'll feel better for getting rid of my "thin clothes" and also for having a fresh start.

I'm doing the whole makeover on theconceptwardrobe.com and it's been life changing so far. I've done a ton of closet clearings/Marie kondo etc in the past and I've only regretted it and ended up filling it back up with more junk. Now it feels very different because I'm learning about the exact shape, colors and patterns that look good on me, as well as which fabrics to go for and how to care for them. So I'm building a wardrobe very consciously and carefully from the ground up and it's definitely going to be easier to stick to this time.

I'm watching in here. I also have problems letting go of clothes that don't fit , and also items I've had for years because I bought them in a sale for 70% off or thereabouts so they seemed a massive bargain but I've never worn the bloody things.
I got way too many clothes that just clog up my wardrobe ( and I'm to fat to fit them ) so I just live in the ones slung over the chair instead.

I kind of have, had a moment at the end of last year where I just felt fed up, I had put on weight and all my clothes made me feel sad. Ditched almost the lot, bought new stuff. I'm kind of doing it again now as I've lost weight and am moving to another country so I'm trying to get well made cotton/viscose clothes that will work for me. I'm going for a more classic less fashion focused look. Like shirt dresses, cotton t shirts, well fitting jeans. Iyswim.

When I get rid of clothes (and make up) I tell myself that the money is spent now, you won't get it back so you may as well get rid of it for someone else to benefit from.

I have, took me about 3 months. I lost weight and bought stuff over lockdown and then in Feb I looked at my wardrobe and realised it looked completely and utterly bonkers - loads of things didn't match, expensive items that I could only wear on certain occasions, wrong sizes etc.

I decided to sell what I could on eBay and donate anything else. It was nice to see the ££ come in and then I started to buy some new stuff (mix of new and charity) I've been quite ruthless about applying the following rules:

  1. Decide what colours suit me and only buying those.
  2. Buy the best fabrics I can and avoiding polyester and acrylic, high lycra content (excluding gym stuff)
  3. Only keeping if it fits me
  4. Willing to spend a bit more (if needed) on the stuff I wear a lot - for me, these are generally jeans and knitwear.
  5. Not getting distracted by stuff that's pretty but occasion wear or impractical e.g high shoes, pretty dresses, evening wear.
  6. Avoiding anything too trendy and going for classic stuff that hopefully has some longevity.

I did most my shopping online - if you go this route, be prepared to return a lot, sadly. It's so hard to tell the quality and fit from websites, so I only bought from places that had easy returns.

Zengarden001 · 13/06/2021 11:27

And in answer to your question, absolutely no regrets. So far, there's not been one single thing that I've got rid of that I've missed (though I should add, I bagged stuff up and sold gradually so if so did have a bit of cooling off time, if suddenly I regretted it).

Indeed, yesterday I had a garden party to go to and I was torn between which of my lovely outfit combinations to go with as genuinely now I can mix and match a lot in my wardrobe which gives a lot more choice, but with less stuff.

Good luck!

DavidTheDog · 13/06/2021 13:17

Thank you for the encouragement. In addition to thin clothes, I think one problem I have is the items that I rarely use but will definitely need again - funeral outfit, beachwear, cycling Lycra (only kidding).

Ok, my friend cancelled for this afternoon, so I'm doing it today.

I have columns of clothes,- trousers, formal trousers, jeans, leggings and so on from left to right. Then I have rows of size 16, size 14, size 12 etc. heading up and down the rows.

I have a pile for winter stuff like scarves and gloves.

I have a pile of sentimental / size 8 and 10.

So far, I have emptied my wardrobe out and am now moving on to emptying drawers under the bed and vacuum-packed bags.

Go for it!
I'll jusrt add, that if you are a 16 now and you eventually get into a 12, you will want to buy new clothes. So if you feel you really have to keep clothes that are too small, only keep your absolute favourites that are in perfect ondition.

HappyWipings · 13/06/2021 15:03

I did. I got out the clothes I actually wear , laid them them on my bed and saw that it was literally 10 items! A couple of dresses , a pair of trousers some tops etc. I realised that they were all black , navy or checkered. I gradually sold/donated everything else.

Over the last 2 years I have added to those items. I only buy what goes with them. I spend more , buy less and could get dressed in the dark if I chose.

I must add that it took ages and lots of discipline to stop buying things that I won't wear/don't fit me well.

Good luck op. Let us know how you get on.

WindFlower92 · 13/06/2021 15:06

I'm doing it! I've been reading a thread where a poster completely changes her wardrobe and shopping habits and it inspired me to do the same. I've just had my second baby and have set myself a budget for the year. I've bought most of the clothes/shoes that I could get while pregnant, and am now waiting for my body to (magically) go back to normal before buying anything else. I've decided what colours suit me and found what style I lean towards by looking at Pinterest. Then I've put together some outfit ideas and am only buying those items, so no spontaneity! I can't wait to fully get the outfits together! I'll link to the thread if you haven't seen it before.

DavidTheDog · 13/06/2021 15:37

Thank you, everyone's posts have been helpful. It is difficult being this age and accepting my changing body shape. I am struggling to let go of the 30-something size 8 me, and embrace a lifestyle that is more about health.

So far I have packed away the really cold weather stuff and there were no size 12s or below to deal with.

Beach wear done too. I was ruthless with my beloved Mantaray bikinis.

I have one bag of thin clothes to go through that have so far survived culls. Obviously, I decided to procrastinate instead...

I am done.

Threw all of the thin clothes in to the recycling bag. Then I asked Alexa to play some 90s indie music and went back and rescued a few items.

All that remains otherwise are the clothes that fit - size 16s and 14s. I noticed a slight tendency to choose fabrics that I like rather than cuts that suit me. Something to bear in mind in future.

Wardrobe is half empty, just the way I like it. I think that's helped me say goodbye to some thoughts and feelings that I needed to let go of. Helps me to focus on my next chapter in some ways.

I know it's hard to part with clothing you love , but keeping things that don't fit is just upsetting. If you can sell some of it on you can buy some lovely things that you'll wear all of the time. And you'll be so happy once you know that everything in your wardrobe suits you , it's a really nice feeling.

HappyWipings · 13/06/2021 16:26

Cross posted there! Well done opSmile
