How do you dress the middle age thickening waistline?

Doesn't help that I hate my arms and legs. Used to have good boobs and a waist, so wore fairly clingy clothing but it's definitely not working for me now I'm in my 50s

I'm a size 16/18. 5ft 7 ish, Short waisted, big boobed. Varicose veins so hate showing my legs. Arms aren't very toned but I'm trying to work on that. Have been living in jeggings and tops but my family have (fairly) tactfully suggested that I need to find a new style

Any thoughts would be very appreciated

Vegans are less boring than carb bores. She didn't ask for diet advice. She asked for style advice.

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/06/2021 05:54

Yes, and I had the same problem and that's how I solved it. Back in the knife box Miss Sharp.

As a size 28 😳 I find that a tent from the neck down works well for me! But you are only an itty bitty thing, so just wear what you feel happy in (ok if you do think that you are too overweight, you probably don't feel happy in anything, but you should) 💐 Maybe you could try looking at lots of online plus-size models (including the ladies who 'model' on the "Snag tights" website), they are nearly all beautiful, and part of their beauty comes from their glowing confidence, that clearly shines through - wear the clothes that you like (and an important aspect for me), ones that you feel comfortable in.
ps. I have actually never seen a plus-sized model that I don't think looks beautiful, but I felt that some might not believe an 'all', so I therefore put 'nearly', but I do actually mean 'all' but worry that some might think that it was just hyperbole on my part...

And feel free to ignore, but cutting out carbs is the only thing that worked on my waistline first. I lost half my spare tyre in three weeks. It works for hormonal weight gain. Lots of threads on here about it.

MaudesMum · 19/06/2021 07:27

60-something here - carrying nearly all my excess weight around my middle. Used to be straight up & down, now basically an apple. I think you can look good, and still avoid the whole tunic and leggings thing. I wear a lot of straight leg, high waist jeans with lots of lycra, and have them in several sizes, depending where I am on the whole losing weight thing. At this time of year they'd be cropped or rolled up and worn with big shirts on top. Or oversized sweatshirts. Also carefully chosen - and always tried on - dresses, sometimes worn over cropped jeans. I personally think loose but straight-ish dresses work well - think shirt dresses, or the tunic dresses someone linked to earlier. I've had great results from Cos, but also the less mad end of Toast, and Kin from John Lewis is also worth a look.

Jumping on thread to mark my place, mid 50’s struggling with extra stone, new body shape and fashion/style to suit me, coming back to read the thread properly.

AwkwardSquad · 19/06/2021 07:53

I’m in the covid stone / hormonal waist thickening boat as well… it’s a balancing act between wanting to get back into my nice clothes, and bloody loving food. Pfffft. So far, food is winning 😁

But I’m upping the exercise so I do at least feel fitter and stronger.

AwkwardSquad · 19/06/2021 07:55

I look like a sister-wife in the big floaty dresses unfortunately, I prefer more of a Cos vibe. But currently living in Hush harem pants

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 19/06/2021 07:57

Steal the dress back Wink

If you like it, wear it

If your daughter says you look pregnant, say:” thank you, nice to hear I look young enough to be pregnant again dear”

Fight back Grin

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/06/2021 08:15

Who wants to look pregnant when they aren't?!

I get so hungry, do you mean potatoes, bread and rice?

I try not to eat biscuits or cake and try not to snack between meals

I do exercise each day so I feel more toned up

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/06/2021 18:11

Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, cake and anything sugary. It's a really tough diet to do properly but it works.

She didn't ask for carb evangelism. There are plenty of threads about it. She asked for how to dress for her shape. Hmm

Personally I don't give a fuck how I look anymore. I want to enjoy whatever foods I want to eat.

She didn't ask for bores to come on here and repeatedly bang on about diet whilst saying, 'Feel free to ignore'.

sadperson16 · 19/06/2021 19:19

Yawn, give up everything. Er, no.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 19/06/2021 19:21

@sadperson16

Yawn, give up everything. Er, no.
Exactly. Fuck that. I've given up enough in life through no choice of my own.
JellyBabiesFan · 19/06/2021 19:22

Stop eating crap and do some exercise.

sadperson16 · 19/06/2021 19:35

I have never eaten crap.I have however, been a victim of the relentless drive to lose weight and quelle surprise!.....regained even more

So no,I wont be giving up.I am interested in some of the links people have kindly posted.

woodhill · 19/06/2021 19:53

It's all age related anyway and hormonal. I used to be a skinny minnie and teased at school

I'm enjoying my ice cream with my thickening middle and grey

Ifeelsuchafool · 19/06/2021 22:15

I don't eat carbs after lunchtime and very few before. I've recently lost 5 stones. I'm still a size 20 waist, (38 inches) and a size 14 hips, (41 inches) Sad Skirts either cut me in two around the middle or swim on my hips, and don't get me on the subject of trousers because I cannot find a pair that look good on me for love nor money.
I have recently secured a new job. Starting in four weeks, I need to look smart and professional. I don't have a clue how to do this so I feel OP's pain.

Laurie01 · 03/07/2021 11:48

Long shirt dresses buttoned to waist, leaving lower half open over smart trousers or jeans. So legs and arms covered but cinch in waist with belt creating an hourglass figure. Maybe even add a slim shoulder pad.

Paripale · 03/07/2021 11:58

As I approach my fifties I’m focusing less on body conscious styles and more on deconstructed shapes in amazing colours, patterns and textures and top quality materials. I like longline cardigans, linen or cotton harem trousers, cotton t’s with a nice drape to them. I pair these with DM’s or saltwater sandals. Designers I particularly like at the moment: www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-gb

And/ or John Lewis ( T-shirt’s)
