Teen dd and stretchmarks

bendmeoverbackwards · 10/06/2021 23:23

Dd is 14 and has quite a few stretchmarks on her arms, legs and hips. Very common in puberty I know.

I’ve reassured her that they fade in time to faint silver lines. She hates them and I’m wondering if there is a cream that will speed up the fading process?

Oils are great, bio oil works well

MaizeBlouse · 10/06/2021 23:48

Tbh, no there isn't.
There are people who will slather themselves in whatever cream or oil and say it work miracles and they never got any stretchmarks but really it's genetic if you will get them or not.
A cream or oil will barely make a difference if she is already getting them, but maybe it will help her mentally to at least be trying if you see what I mean.
I got lots during puberty and pregnancy, like your daughter I hated them and it sadly did effect my self esteem. They have faded now but I still really dislike them.

Same issue in our house, DD seems to think Bio Oil is improving it slowly but then she got a fresh lot of marks a few days ago. She won't go to school without black tights on Sad

Same here, my DD 14 has them on her hips. They are vivid. I told her everyone (even Daddy) gets them and they fade to silver. She seemed happy enough with that. If she were upset I would give the bio oil a try, massaging a little in it in might be a nice calming thing to do.

Bio-oil is really good and will also help with the skin's suppleness.

Another REALLY good body oil is the Tonic Oil from Clarins - it is more expensive but (IMO) works better than the bio-oil. Again, it will help them to heal and fade from that initial rawness and will keep the skin supple.

I've found also that one of those gradual tanners covers them really well without being too 'fake tan' looking and is ideal for this time of year if she wanted to ditch the black tights.

Poor thing - on the plus side, if she's getting stretch marks at least she is getting a lovely feminine shape! I didn't get any during puberty, but I also didn't get any boobs or hips, and reached a giddying height of 5' 1", so every cloud... This is meant in a kind and light hearted way, I know how upset friends have been by them but just about everyone - men included - have some (mine erupted at 39 weeks pregnant, when I finally had boobs and hips!) They do definitely, definitely fade away and go thinner.

PickAChew · 11/06/2021 00:15

Yiu can make them more comfortable and less angry looking with oils and a bit of sunlight can help them fade but, otherwise, there's not much you can do..

HandsOffMyRights · 11/06/2021 00:22

My son uses bio oil.
I had terrible stretch marks as a teen and following pregancy. I didn't know what they were as a teen and during changing for Games I was laughed at and told "youre too young for those" etc. so I hope today we can normalise this common part of puberty.

Coconut oil is another option.

Thank you, I'll give bio oil a try but warn dd it might not have much effect. Can anyone recommend a specific one?

Try Neals Yard Wheatgerm oil

PioneerWoman · 11/06/2021 11:53

Bio oil is the brand name, Amazon, Boots lots of places sell it. Never used it myself but have seen it on shelves over the years. I don’t work for them Grin.

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/06/2021 12:04

Thank you, much appreciated.

Don't waste your money, great opportunity to teach your daughter that the scum of the beauty 'industry' lie. Bio oil does nothing - stretch marks either fade or not by themselves. Same for all the other smelly gunk sold. The only smelly gunk that actually does what it says is called sunscreen, and even there don't buy anything aimed at women as it will be pricier and less effective.

AnnaMagnani · 11/06/2021 12:08

They fade by themselves. Bio-oil is a triumph of marketing based on nothing.

Beamur · 11/06/2021 12:08

Puberty stretch marks fade quite quickly. Nothing will stop them but Bio oil is worth a try. I used it during pregnancy.
The marks come from deep tissue damage which the oil can't actually penetrate to. But it does help the skin feel more supple and moisturised.
Smells nice too..

SirenSays · 11/06/2021 12:17

Oil never did anything good for me, and it took ages to stop feeling so greasy. I also found that all that rubbing them seemed to make mine look worse.

Lots of my bodybuilder friends use derma rollers on their stretch marks. Maybe you could ask doctor or dermatologist?

There are lots of camouflage make up brands out there now. They give full coverage, long lasting and you can even go swimming in some of them. There are even charities that will help with colour matching if it's really impacting her self esteem.

30flavorsfloral · 11/06/2021 16:40

There isn't much on the market that works for stretchmarls atm.

I think keeping the skin moisturised for now with good clean products and drinking plenty of water is your best bet. I expect there'll be laser treatments in the future (i know there are some that claim to remove stretchmarks but as far as i can see none truly do).

A light tanning lotion may help reduce appearance too

lavenderlou · 11/06/2021 18:45

No advice about what to do about them in the short term, but for reassurance I had loads as a young teen and they faded very quickly. They were almost unnoticeable by the age of about 17.

KillingMeDeftly · 11/06/2021 21:20

Apparently a propensity to stretch marks is genetic so there's nothing to be done about them. I have a lot from puberty that are more or less faded but weirdly I didn't get any while pregnant.

cozycat1 · 11/06/2021 22:37

I have silvery stripy thighs and bum. Stretch marks started at puberty and still here 30 yrs later. Also got some at the side of my knees. I only ever get my legs out on holiday and a bit of fake tan helps disguise them. I don't think anything can fade them totally, its more of a what can hide them if she is really upset with them.
