DD shaved her hairline

I noticed it this morning. She's 12, mixed-race with gorgeous shoulder-length curls. She said she did it because she was self-conscious about her 'baby hairs'. There's a noticeable shadow where she's done it, which will become stubble as it starts to grow back. I think she regrets it, and don't want her to feel she has to keep doing it to avoid the unsightly regrowth. Can anyone recommend any styles that can hide it while it's growing back? I'm not very skilled with hair!

Oh bless her, I remember doing something similar at that age! Headbands/scarves were a godsend - maybe take her out to buy a couple so that she can choose some she really likes? They can look really lovely and will hide the regrowth nicely till it grows out a bit.

Yes, head scarves and bands are going to be the best option.

Long term, there are lots of youtube videos about styling baby hairs. Bit of gel on a toothbrush and they can be sorted easily. Lots of celebs have them - most of the Kardashians do as do some of their children.

Take her to a beautician when the hair looks long enough and get it threaded. She’s old enough now to decide for herself in terms of body hair etc.

Thank you, I'll have a look at what's available. I hated my bushy eyebrows at that age and once shaved half of one of them off, it felt like an eternity until it grew back so I really feel for her!

I done the same!
I was in a headband for months!

BiBabbles · 10/06/2021 13:32

I did the same around that age as did my DS1 at 11. Some nice cloth headbands worked wonders (not so much for when I did the same with my eyebrows after my mother wouldn't stop commenting that I needed to 'deal with them').

I have lots of baby hairs as my hair is slowly growing thicker (long story) I flatten them with either styling cream or hairspray.

Does she have anyone in her life who is? Anyone with the same/similar hair to hers?

It sounds like she needs a bit of a role model/mentor when it comes to her hair - for styling her baby hairs at the very least.

Yes her older half-sister has the same hair-type and would happily advise her if asked. I have taught DD how to care for her hair properly, bought detangling spray/curl creams etc, but she is very strong willed and reluctant to take advice. I think the shaving probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but she instantly realised it was a mistake. I'll try to persuade her to ask her sis what she does with hers, and in the meantime have ordered some headbands which will arrive tomorrow.

There is edge cream she can use to take care of baby hairs in general and it might help as it starts to grow in.

Doesabear · 10/06/2021 18:33

Great I'll look that up. Thanks for the advice everyone.

These can be worn further onto the forehead, and double as substitute mask.

My nine year old did this last month
