Two failed wedding make up trials - I need help to do it myself

Cantdecidewhich · 10/06/2021 08:52

The first trail, my make up looked great on photos but really cakey and heavy in real life
Second trial, I looked 10 years older and deathly pale, I sent a pic to my son and he said I looked like I had been dug up Grin
I have decided to have a go myself just buy new products.
Can anyone please recommend long lasting products that will look good on photos. I am in my fifties and would like a natural, healthy look but want to look polished. Any help would be fantastic please

My friend (late 40s) had FIVE makeup trials with different makeup artists in Norwich and found the same. Even the "natural" looks were cakey. You know your face better than anybody else.

Have you tried MAC face and body? It's a strange consistency but fab once you get used to it. Light coverage.

Daniel Sandler watercolor blush in cherub is amazing, lightweight and long lasting.

@30flavorsfloral did she do her own in the end? will look the blush thanks

@mrssmiling great I will see what they have.

Can anyone recommend a good non cakey concealer that will be ok for photos please?

Make up artists will use your own foundation. If you can brave another make up trial, go to a beauty counter first and get a foundation matched to your skin to take with you.

OP, you might find the Beauty Bible award winners an interesting read.

Definitely try to avoid spf so that you don’t get flash back in the photos. The Bobbi brown foundation stick is really good. You can keep it light and just add a bit more coverage where you need it. Make sure you have a good primer too. Bobbi counters were doing make up on people where I live last week so might be worth a look. Also check out Hannah Martin on you tube she used to be the head artist for Bobbi brown but is freelance now. She’s done makeup for royal weddings. Years ago she did a you tube vid doing makeup on her mil which could be worth a look if you can find it.

I also decided that I'd rather invest in learning how to do make up myself rather than paying someone to do it for me as a one off when I got married. I didn't really wear much make up at all so it was an eye opener and I'm glad I did it. I had a friend who worked in the industry who advised me to go for Bobbi Brown as a natural look and to focus on paying a premium for the base products (foundation, primer and concealer) as they're harder to match, then I could get cheaper eye shadows etc. She said the big mistake most people make is wear face products containing SPF as that's what gets caught by camera flashes. I've got very thin and light eye brows and use the blonde eyebrow pencil from Bobbi Brown to give them a bit of definition as anything more makes me look like I've drawn them on. I also went back for two more trials (as the first one was too natural and I wanted to be sure on the second) and was fairly open about the fact I wasn't buying everything from there, and they were fine with it. I still buy my base from there six years on, although only when they have 10-20% off in John Lewis so they've done alright out of me!

My make up trial made me look like a hooker despite a request for a natural look so I did it myself. I visited a few make up counters in the run up and bought the products I liked. I probably spent as much as the make up person would have charged but the make up lasted me a year.

Cantdecidewhich · 12/06/2021 07:38

It seems like Bobbi Brown is definitely the best place to start then, thanks so much for your replies. I will let you know how today goes Grin

Eyebrow-wise you still might find that a tiny helps, even with very thin eyebrows - for me, it sort of helps fill them in as it darkens the tiny lighter hairs you don't even see without otherwise. I tint my own using Refectocil and then use a pencil from Kiki in a cool taupe-ish shade (I'm blonde) if I need to fill in. I also recommend the Rimmel version of Boy Brow - can't remember what it's called but again they do a cool toned version that's good for blondes, and helps your brows stay in place all day.

I did my own make-up for my.wrdding and although I don't regret it, I wish I'd spent a bit more time finding long-lasting products. I would have LOATHED feeling caked/not like me on the day though.

Cream eye shadows - Trinny London v good.

Cream blusher - I like Nars multiple in Portofino shade.

Check out Rae Morris for makeup tutorials

Pat McGrath Skin Fetish foundation. Heaven. Buy the primer too.

Better than Chanel Sublimage even.

Thanks for your help again.
So I went into town, Boots only had 4 make up counters and no Bobbi Brown. I went to Dior and the girl was totally disinterested, she suggested a spray on foundation but I had visions of getting it everywhere on the day so said no. She gave me a sample of another one to try. I was on my way out and got stopped by a lovely lady on Lancôme spraying perfume, I had a chat with her and whilst we were talking I noticed some products on offer. One was a discontinued lippie called In Love, she shower me all the shades and there was a lovely deep rose pink. I was allowed to try it on a cotton bud and it was fab, I took it and it was only £10 so a real bargain and will go lovely with the Estée Lauder Rose lip liner I have ordered. We went to a BBQ last night and I tested it and it does last really well so I am delighted with it. DP said it looks really pretty too :)
We have a shopping centre on the edge of town with a large Boots that I am pretty sure has a Bobbi counter so I will probably go over after work one night this week.

Sounds great!! I love a bargain!

www.bobbibrown.co.uk/store_locator -- you can put in your postcode here to see where you're nearest counters are as tbh, I don't think I've ever seen a Bobbi Brown counter in a Boots but obviously haven't been to that many larger Boots stores.

Cantdecidewhich · 15/06/2021 08:41

@brainstories568 thanks for the link.
