How did you transition to grey hair

Over lockdown I'd grown out my hair dye and had gotten more comfortable with my grey hair. It's quite noticeable, all around the front of my head and is white with salt and pepper areas.
Went to the hairdresser 6 weeks ago for full highlights and colour, and now I'm back to square one again with a ridiculous inch of regrowth. Of course I anticipated this but am wanting really to embrace my grey hair and stop trying to live a lie!
So my question is this, did anyone go cold turkey with the dye or did you get a sort of transition colour to blend them through.
I'm only 34 so need to get used to my grey hair, if I get it right I think it could be a 'look' - fierce silver fox vibe maybe??

I stopped the dye during lockdown as well and let it go au naturel. Then had it bobbed. So much nicer and my greys just sparkle now.
First pic is the front before. A real rats nest!
@Blossomtoes, beautiful ! And so healthy looking.
Thank you. @Cocolapew is the queen of grey though, it’s stunning.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/06/2021 12:10

I have just let mine grow grey and never dyed, but if I had I would dye with lighter colours gradually.

81Byerley · 09/06/2021 12:11

I had mine cut very short, then went back 6 weeks later and had the last of the coloured ends cut off.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 09/06/2021 12:19
@RockingMyFiftiesNot, I know a wonderfully stylish Parisian woman who has the same pattern greying and has completely embraced it. She has gotten quite a 'design' haircut, straight bob-style without layers, and is often pairing it with black and white clothes. She looks fabulous.
Sadly, I am not a wonderfully stylish Parisian woman Grin

Mine has some strong white stripes, sounds like the front of yours? I grew out a couple of inches, but then my fab hairdresser dyed the ends of all the white stripes to match the roots. Instant smart result. The dye has now all grown out and I much prefer how it looks now to my former dark brown with almost instant grey roots.

EmmaStone · 09/06/2021 12:23

I had short hair, dyed to match my dark brown, but the fight against the white became too much of an expensive hassle. My hairdresser actually bleached my hair for highlights, sis these in a silver, and the rest of the hair a steely grey. I wasn't convinced, so next time I was due a colour, we wen t lighter in more placers, and I had a lilac colour wash (I'm not fully ready to just be grey!).

Since then (Dec 2019) I've grown it out a bit, haven't had it dyed, but I use a colour depositer shampoo to keep the purple, and I use it weekly (unfortunately, it's got quite hard to get hold of the shampoo, I tend to have to have it shipped from the US now, thankfully a bottle lasts a long time). It's now quite silvery, with purple over the top (which fades with each wash until the next top up). The bright young things seem to love it - I get A LOT of comments when out and about. Has been a bit of an eye opener of how invisible I was before (although people seem to think that with purple hair, it immediately makes me friendly and approachable. Most of the time I am, sometimes I just want to do my supermarket shop in peace Grin).

Cocolapew · 09/06/2021 12:38

I'm not sure I am but thanks anyway Blosom 👸😁.

A lot of people's hair comes in patchy, I'm totally white at the front and underneath but it gets darker towards the back.
I think this puts people off when they decide to try to transition, very few have a uniform colour like Blosomtoes.
This photo was from last year, I've gone short again since then, but you can see the difference in colours.
Also my hair looks totally different in different light.

The last two visits to the hairdresser before lockdown I had asked for highlights that had definite parts of my own (v grey) colour growing through. So if you imagine a blonde highlight, a light brown one and a grey one.
My (young) hairdresser took a bit of convincing but it looked fine, much more natural than the one all over colour and it was much better between my 5 weekly visits.
Then lockdown happened and it grew through naturally- it's been really quite painless and is soo much a nicer colour that suits me than when I was dyeing it.

Proudboomer · 09/06/2021 12:45

I have long hair and one day a few years ago I just decided to stop doing my root regrowth.
Kept the long hair and just let the grey grow in.
Now my front is pretty much all grey and the back more streaky and what once was dark brown is lighter.
Don’t do anything to it bar if the grey is looking brassy I will give it a wash with purple shampoo.

Pengwyn · 09/06/2021 12:51

I had my long brown hair dyed progressively lighter with highlights until it got close to my natural colour then I chopped most of it off and grew it out.

It's long again now and I save a fortune on hairdresser visits.

Plus it looks great, I get lots of sincere compliments

gobackanddoitproperly · 09/06/2021 13:25

check out grombre on instagram.

I went cold turkey about 5 years ago now. But I wear short hair well so once I had enough I cut it off.

justsayso · 09/06/2021 13:34

wow I can't believe how many replies this thread has had! Glad in a way so many people have gone through the same. It shouldn't matter, it doesn't really matter, I suppose I would like to just get the transition over with IYSWIM and be grey.
To clarify I have a wedding coming up and just don't have the balls to 'own' my grey on that particular day. Usually I don't care.
I think I will have a chat to the hairdresser and see what we can do to speed things up or 'grombre' it out instead of my current 'badger halo' style!

If you're using permanent dye, start using a semi permanent dye.

As your greys grow out and are cut away, the permanent dye goes with it.

When you're confident all the permanent dye is cut away, start to lessen the semi permanent dye, allowing it to fade out.

At some point, you'll eventually be grey.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 09/06/2021 13:36

I'm planning to stay fairly blonde/bronde then gradually go more silver.

This is what I am hoping will happen with my hair using the colour shampoo 🤞🏻
Phillipa12 · 09/06/2021 17:21

After 10 years of home dyeing my hair to hide my grey I decided to embrace it. I'm 45 and have long layered hair, i started visiting the hairdressers and she did half head of foils and gradually decreased the amount of foils as my natural hair colour came through, it worked really well. My hair is now its natural colour and its a beautiful mix of 70% grey/silver (which sparkles in the sun) mixed with light and dark blond. I have had so many compliments since embracing the grey and am so happy that I did it.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 09/06/2021 17:29

In the last stages of cold turkey here. Lockdown made it easier to get away with, as when nobody could go to the hairdresser, there didn't seem to be pressure to ruin your hair with a dodgy box dye.

Got another inch or so to grow it and then the bottom will be chopped off and I can then decide whether to keep the white stripe or have semi permanent dye until there's enough white to think 'fuck it' and accept I'm getting old.

ChaToilLeam · 09/06/2021 17:37

I got my first greys at 17. Natural dark brunette, but had been getting blonde highlights for years because my hair was pretty much growing in silver. Decided to stop colouring during lockdown and enlisted my hairdresser to help with the transition once salons opened again: lots of very fine, pale highlights to help blend the new growth with the old. I cut my hair back to chin length which is as short as I can stand it. Reckon I am two haircuts away from my hair being absolutely natural - it is a lovely silver now and I get so many compliments on how striking it is

Woolly17 · 09/06/2021 17:38

I did an accidental cold turkey to grey. I stopped having it coloured (blonde) while pregnant and then lockdown happened. So my hair just got to keep growing and last summer I had all the coloured bits cut off. My hair grows reasonably quickly so I had a just off the shoulders bob. It's very white around my face and 60% white everywhere else (I started off with light to mid brown hair). I'm ok with it ...

mrsbyers · 09/06/2021 19:24

I had mine cut off after it got to a couple of inches of roots and now growing it out and down again , got a very layered bob currently but loving my salt and pepper

speakout · 09/06/2021 19:28

No plans to go grey.
I am 50% grey, nearly 60, but prefer to hang on to my dark brown colour.
I have perfected the art of root touch ups- every 2-3 weeks at home.

SwimBaby · 09/06/2021 19:31

speakout that’s my plan too, I’m 52 with only a few percent grey and I colour my roots every couple of weeks. There’s no way I’m going cold Turkey.

woodhill · 09/06/2021 19:41

I grew mine out in lockdown and still have a bit at dye at the end.

I don't like it at times but so hassle free

Then why post on a thread that’s specifically asking about people’s experience of going grey? It’s like someone who can’t drive posting on a thread asking for car recommendations.
