Silver jewellery gone black

I have some beautiful Tiffany silver jewellery that I’ve not worn and it’s gone black. I went through a dark time where I didn’t wear anything nice or bother doing anything for myself, but I am in a very different place now.

The silver jewellery is black! My DH put it in a machine he’s got that is supposed to clean it, but it did nothing. I’ve put it in a pot of jewellery cleaner that I’ve got and it went white (panicked) but seems ok now. The last time I did this, I didn’t wear them and they went black a few days later.

If I can clean it, I plan in wearing them. I’ve got into the habit of wearing jewellery now snd I don’t take it off at night so I’m always a bit more polished.

How can I reclaim this beautiful jewellery?Sad

Toothpaste is the best thing for cleaning silver!

When you’re not wearing it store it in airtight bags/boxes it’s the air that makes it go black.

It partly depends on what the jewellery is like. If it's very intricate, you need something where you can dip it and then follow that with polishing the bits you can get at. If smooth, then just polishing will work.

I think Connoisseur jewellery wipes are excellent (and I use them on a couple of Tiffany pieces that I own) - available on Amazon.

If the tarnish really seems very intractable, it could be worth asking Tiffany what they charge to repolish. One of my Tiffany pieces is a silver pendant on a black cord. The black cord frays after a while and they replace it for me, and they always polish the pendant up like new while it's there.

You want one of the blue polishing cloths for silver. You just give your jewellery a quick rub over and it comes up really well

Silver polish will do the trick

I have a silver polishing cloth that I picked up in Sainsburys, it does a good job of getting all the black stuff off. You don’t need to use any cleaner with it. It was in the aisle with the polish etc.

Line a container (glass or ceramic preferably never use metal) with foil, shiny side up. Add boiling water and baking soda, about 2 tablespoons of soda to 1 litre of water. Drop the jewellery in the dish ensuring it’s touching the foil. Leave for a couple minutes then rinse and polish with a cloth.

I’ve cleaned a tarnished Tiffany bracelet and necklace. I read you can add white vinegar to the mix but I haven’t tried that as the above works for me.

I wear only silver stuff, and have a blue cloth to hand in the drawer with my stuff. But keeping it away from the air is key too as mentioned.
Silver polish, and a good rub with a soft cloth should restore it back, but equally a nice treat might be to get it done at jewellers too.

Just sprayed a pair of my earrings with Viakal!!
Wonders!!

Take it to your closest T store for complimentary cleaning (they will return it to you looking brand new) or buy one of their silver cleaning kits online - they’re £30 for the products and cloth and it works amazingly well. With silver, the more often you wear it, the less it will tarnish. I wear my pieces constantly and they withstand a lot 😂

I see Coffee4Queen has beaten me to posting about the best ever method for cleaning silver. It's truly amazing - far better than any of the other options!

I’ll agree with that!

I’ve also done this and it’s amaZing but I do worry about it as I’ve read that it’s too harsh and damages the silver over time
NotMiranda · 10/06/2021 12:37

Also don't do that to any pieces set with pearls or precious stones (other than diamonds) as it will definitely damage them.

TheVolturi · 10/06/2021 12:44

I heard that cola cleans silver?

grownup2 · 10/06/2021 17:47

Storing in plastic bag is a good idea - and you could add these little impregnated papers for extra protection.

I make silver jewellery, the easiest, quickest and cheapest way, is to use fairy liquid, warm water and use a brush a toothbrush you don't use anymore, this should quickly remove oxidation then a dry micro fibre cloth or jewellery cloth to polish.
Cold jewellery cleaning dips aren't enough to remove much tarnishing.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 10/06/2021 20:49

Be careful with using baking soda or jewellery dips - I did a Pandora ring in baking soda and it appears to have wrecked it. Not all silver is equal quality imo.
I'd contact Tiffany. Their stuff is too expensive to just be risking cleaning it without their advice.
