How to look stylish as a SAHM / WFH?

I'm doing a mix of both and am a bit lost clothes-wise. I can do office wear. I can do scruff bag. But I can't do in between! And I want to look stylish if at all possible.

Wondering what other people wear to achieve stylish WFH / playdate-wear?

Sahm is a pisser to dress if you actually have to cook and wash up frequently.
I have a weekly cleaner and gardeners, but still find myself dressing in things with very easy to roll up sleeves (3/4 sleeves or non even better) and that I dont mind getting dirty.
I have lovely silk shell top and light trousers etc - they look good on the school run or at garden fetes, but around the house, sadly not.

True! Maybe I need to accept that SAHM days are just going to be a bit scruffy... I do have to cook and wash up quite a lot, sadly!

I sometimes do the day in athleisure wear (possibly or possibly not including any formal exercise)

StevieKnickerbockerglory · 06/06/2021 16:25

I really like the athleisure look, especially when it's done well / is on the right person. I tried lululemon leggings but messed up the sizing and never bothered again.

I quite like mixing styles generally, so athleisure with smart coat etc.

Have a look at Me+Em,The White Company,J.Crew,Boden,Gap,Zara. Create an online board with the look you want to achieve and work from there regarding colours, prices etc. I like athleisure but not leggings (they are not very forgiving!). There is no need to look scruffy with all the choice out there ,just be practical and comfortable but put together.

I wear a lot of blouses on WFH days, with large collars or puff sleeves. I try and avoid t-shirts for working. I also have jeans in various styles, and dresses for Spring/Summer. For non work days I wear more casual tops/t-shirts.

The Sweaty Betty all day leggings with the ruched bottoms are good for athleisure.

PersonaNonGarter · 07/06/2021 06:59

I agree about blouses/Shirts/cotton tops with cuffs or collars.

Avoid t-shirts and hoodies (if you can be arsed) and focus on a top half that looks tidy ish. Wear jeans with a belt and you’re done.

Thanks all. Very helpful!

I do wear jeans a lot. I have a couple of button down shirts which I wear in summer. Thinking maybe slightly smarter t-shirts with a blazer in cooler months? Could even get away with leggings under a blazer maybe 🤔.

I like the whole athleisure mixed with smart clothes thing I see sometimes. I've got a nice trench coat which I wear with trainers, jeans and T-shirt sometimes. Maybe that's the route I should be going down; smarter office wear mixed with casual stuff? Will have a Pinterest.

An oversized denim shirt makes most things look a bit more put together IMO even if your wearing leggings

Also try cardigans with smart ish tops

StevieKnickerbockerglory · 07/06/2021 08:37

Oh thanks, hadn't thought of a denim jacket. I can imagine that looking nice and think I've seen that on Pinterest somewhere.

I've been WFH since last March but don't have the SAHM side to think about which is probably much easier!

I'm a lecturer, so until recently have been live-teaching online, lots of tutorials etc, so camera pretty much always on. I've not worn my office clothes at all, but always have makeup, hair done etc, and have settled into a few different "uniforms" through the seasons. Now the weather's a bit warmer I am switching between jeans/t-shirt/cardigan/trainers, and midi-dress/trainers. In winter it was jeans/knitwear, although sometimes I would switch to fleece-lined joggers and Ugg boots in the afternoon as we have a cold house.

Today I'm in a t-shirt from Joanie, a boxy v-neck Arket cardigan (I have this in five colour-ways, it is the perfect cardi!), cropped Levi's 501s, and cream Stan Smiths. I teach a creative subject but I know colleagues in more academic areas are wearing much the same, no-one is sitting around in their kitchens or spare rooms in shirts and ties.

I find putting a bit of effort into my skin and hair really has helped me look pulled together. Nothing too crazy, but a consistent skincare routine, brushing my hair at night and sweeping it into a bun that enhances the wave in my hair. Bit of BB cream and mascara in the morning. Also making sure that clothes fit properly, but that is such a pain with online ordering.

Even if I'm just in jeans and a top, somehow I feel more 'together'.

Amelia666 · 07/06/2021 12:40

I’m currently wfh in a sports bra, fitflops and wide leg silk trousers 😂 (Not a sahm though)

I wfh for many years pre-pandemic and now mainly just wear weather-appropriate combinations of cashmere and/or silk.

Agree with the grooming aspect as well - hair, nails, skincare, makeup (if you wear it) and jewellery really changes a casual and thrown together collection of clothing into something more chic ... even if not stylish or fashionable.

I don't pass for stylish, but I do flit between WFH and homeschooling at the moment. I have a few viscose dresses that are like a blouse on top, just in case there's a last-minute zoom. The one I'm wearing today is by Soaked In Luxury (got it a couple of years back in a little shop in Lampeter). It's similar to this

I don't have the upper arms for t-shirts etc.
