Fear to fling it

Just got the suitcase of summer clothes out, some old things but as they only get worn a few times a year I’m not that bothered. However I’d really like to get rid of most of my winter wardrobe, as it’s ancient. However due to a number of reasons I don’t want to throw stuff out as I’ve got a fear that in the autumn I won’t be able to replace them. I struggle to find trousers so only have one pair but like knee length skirts for work. These are not fashionable so tricky to find. Please convince me it’s better to have a few things that you like and keep washing them rather than drawers full of bobbled tops and jumpers!

Somewhere in the middle?

If you know, for example, that you need three skirts and they're tricky to replace, and you currently only have 3 then you'd be silly to bin any. If you currently have 7, then bin 4.

If things are too bobbled to wear then that's an easy win, get rid.

(Obviously by bin I mean donate/recycle before anyone scolds me for suggesting you just throw clothes in the general waste!).

Have look at minimal mom wardrobe declutter on you tube . She has a few videos on this topic.

I think I'd become quite miserly in the past few years- only buying essentials and the odd item that was inevitable wrong!

The only issue is you will have to spend some money buying new stuff!

Now I have a smallish wardrobe of gorgeous clothes that fit me and I love it!

I should add minimal mom suggests. "Quarantining" the clothes before you get rid. There buy reducing the risk of regret of thrown items.

Just get rid of stuff that is no longer suitable, either worn out, doesn't fit, or doesn't suit.

It would be wasteful to get rid of things that are wearable. Even if you have too much stuff, you can save some until you need it unless it is the sort of thing that will rapidly go out of fashion.

It’s always best to just get rid.

Thanks so much. This is just what I needed to hear! ! I know I’ve got to spend a bit but my sons both need new wardrobes so they are the priority. I’ve quarantined and rediscovered in the past so that’s a good tip. Added to my frustration is my size 5’2” and a 12 but ideally 11😆 plus the inability to try things on in certain shops and no clothes shops in the town I live in. I seem to be constantly checking my credit card to make sure all the refunds have gone back.

I’m a natural collector, and also love clothing. I much prefer to have lots of options as I’m quite moody when it comes to fashion. I have had a LOT of clothing in my lifetime.

But I have really, genuinely, found it much better in the past couple of years to have far less stuff - just to keep things I really love, that fit me well and suit my lifestyle. It’s simpler, less to keep on top of and it means I always have something nice to wear.

You won't regret throwing throwing out anything that is already unwearable, like bobbly jumpers that you have already tried to de-bobble, or things with holes in the wrong place.( holes on seams can be mended).
If you have 2 similar items and find you always go for one of them, then let go of the least favourite- there's usually a reason that it's always second choice. Check the fit around the neckline and shoulders- that's hard to alter, and if it isn't right, the garment will never look good.
If there's nothing the matter with a garment, you won't be considering getting rid of it, it's because it's faded/unflattering/dated that it's even coming up for consideration.
