Meeting his family, what to wear!

So I am meeting my partners family for the first time at the end of June, it's his sisters birthday party. I'm usually very alternative, I wear a lot of killstar clothing (basically gothy) and dr martens. I've also got very blue hair....

The thing is I wouldn't probably wear a short black dress, tights and boots to meet his fairly normal family and I stand out already because of my height and hair! I draw a lot of attention because I'm confident, laugh a lot and dress younger than I am (32).

I either go as I normally dress or tone it down a bit. But I just don't know what to wear. My day to day stuff when I am at home is just leggings and a tshirt!

I'm having a moment because I don't know if I should make an effort or if I should try to be as casual as possible. He's also a few years younger than me so I'm trying to avoid drawing attention to the 7 year age gap...

I'll be meeting his whole family so his sister, and his aunt+family. His parents unfortunately passed away years ago.

Help!

Your style sounds amazing! I'd wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. That'll be a much greater impression than you wearing something you don't feel comfortable in Smile

I wouldn’t suppress your personality, just tone it down. The sister probably already know you’re a goth and have blue hair.

I can honestly say it’s the first time I’ve looked at the Killstar website. However, theses dresses are goth-y, but not way out.

dress 1

Like the whole image of this, although tights may be a bit hot in this heat.

dress 2

dress 3
But maybe not this one!

ooh, I love that velvet dress - but unless things go downhill it might be a bit over-warm.

The first one would work. Maybe with the empyrean leggings?

I am howling at dress number 3!!! I know the dresses I already have wouldn’t be suitable as they’re a bit cleavagey but hey, any excuse to add to my collection. And you’re right, she probably does know I’m a bit gothy and maybe it would be obvious if I toned up wearing something I wouldn’t usually wear.

Probably not appropriate to wear my “Bitch Craft” T-shirt. My son goes to a catholic school and I once wore it to pick him up and had to fold my arms weirdly to hide it.

Okay I feel a bit better, I’ll go as me!

Maybe something from hell bunny?

What kind of party is it? That should shape your decision as even staying within the style you feel comfortable in there will be variations between an outfit for a BBQ in the back garden and a black tie do at a fancy hotel for example.

EMP has some goth lite dresses

Do your DP and siblings use Facebook/ Instagram (or whatever you youngsters use?
Maybe ask to borrow his phone and scroll back a year or two?

Tone it down a tad,be courteous and polite .
listen and take a thoughtful gift.

You’ll be fine on the day

I find that if you either do goth beauty, shoes, or clothes but only one of those will not be too overpowering while keeping a bit of identity.
Goth dresses with "normal" shoes, (maybe trainers) hair and makeup is toned down enough imo. Especially as they are usually black!
Or, normal jeans, t shirt etc but then wicked eyeliner and hair colour.
Would that do, do you think?
A bit like the "tits or legs but not both" rule lol

What about just a plain black midi or maxi dress? Would look great with converse or Dr's especially the doc sandals. Would be comfy, cool and understated x
