Cotton midi dresses without frills!

sunshinesupermum · 01/06/2021 10:43

First world problems but why is it nigh impossible to find a print midi-length cotton dress without frills at a reasonable price ie £50 or less? Wrap dresses are a no-no too. TIA
@Whosaidit I got an M which I think is a loose 12, maybe it’s a looser fit compared to other mango dresses
Thanks! It’s listed as 10,12,14 here rather than s,m,l but I’ve ordered a 12 hoping it will be right as I’m pushing a 14 really but that size is sold out

If you like the Boden dresses they have some at Brand Alley at the moment. It’s an outlet website and you have to sign up. They have cotton boden patterned midi dresses for £44 though, although limited sizes. www.brandalley.co.uk/17292521.html

I’ve just bought this one from Next. I got the navy striped one too. I bought them because I thought they’d be good for lounging about in the house/garden but they’re too nice for that. They’re really big though so you’d need to size down.

MareofBeasttown · 03/06/2021 14:42

@thefairycaravan I like those Next dresses but are the armholes too big, as the reviews say?

Divebar2021 · 03/06/2021 15:48

Monki do a lot of print dresses although many are viscose. You can search for cotton dresses though. I have a stripy shirt dress which is good quality

Thanks 21Flora for reminding me of BrandAlley - I since got waylaid looking at all their offers LOL

Divebar2021 Will check out Monki

Is this the one Divebar21? If so does it come up big or true to size? I'm usually a 14/L but this is oversized.

@MareofBeasttown I ordered the berry print Next dress and found the arm holes very big, showed my bra strap under my arm and to the side of breasts. I found sizing very big in an unflattering way, definitely try a size or 2 smaller than your usual size.

MareofBeasttown · 03/06/2021 22:18

Thanks @tambourinetunes.

Divebar2021 · 03/06/2021 22:42

@sunshinesupermum

Yes it is that one from Monki - if you’re a 14 I think a M would be ok. I had the XL as an 18 and it was pretty loose but it is now too big as a size 16. I try and stick with the cotton items... I would definitely re-buy that shirt dress which is cool on a hot day.

AllOptionsAreOnTheTable · 03/06/2021 22:51

@QuentininQuarantino

I’m sorry, it’s because I’m not in the uk! But *@MareofBeasttown* that means I didn’t nab your dress!!
I've just got this dress in navy. It's gorgeous. Short in the waist, but still looks lovely. Not in the UK either, so it wasn't me!
QuentininQuarantino · 04/06/2021 10:43

It’s arrived and an M is labeled as a 10. There’s quite a size difference between the L I tried in store and the M. It’s not hugely flattering in the hips but good everywhere else I think.

Mine arrived too, in a 12. Not as flattering as I’d hoped, like you said, it’s the hip area and there seems to be a bit too much material. Also v v thin material. I bought both colours, not sure which I’ll keep yet, if either. It also needs a good iron which might help how it looks!
Montalbanosono · 04/06/2021 10:51

I tried on @quentininquarantino 's dress in store yesterday thanks to this thread! It seemed quite big so an S was fine on me (usually a 10/12 with small boobs!) but I decided against it as I don't like to show my legs off through the slits.

Montalbanosono · 04/06/2021 10:52

@quentininquarantino - I like it on you! Especially the red.

Whosaidit · 04/06/2021 11:16

Agree! Sorry I meant to say it does look good on you Quentin

QuentininQuarantino · 04/06/2021 11:28

thank you! I like the thin material as I live in a hot climate, and I like the slits because I have good legs! Not so good hips, but I've lost 2 stone recently so don't mind them as much. It was pretty cheap so I'll keep both I think. I live in a beach city and its hard work finding something that you can wear to work and then go to the beach in. Most beach dresses are see through.

MareofBeasttown · 04/06/2021 12:05

I have bought this in red in a size 12, but not got it yet. Am in London and the heat wave has just given way to pouring rain, so may be too thin. It looks v good on you, Quentin.

Montalbanosono · 04/06/2021 14:08

Me too! I sadly don't have the legs though!

I often completely or part way, sew up slits in a dress as they can often be too high can’t they
sunshinesupermum · 04/06/2021 16:14

I've succumbed to this even though it's not a midi! www.monki.com/en_gbp/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/product.oversized-midi-shirt-dress-blue.0942798010.html

@MareofBeasttown I’ve got the Brerry Print Next dress on today. Mine is a size 6, and my arms are really skinny, you can’t see my bra at all.
