EasyJet cabin bag for 5 day trip - possible?

I’m going on a short break with my boyfriend in a couple of weeks to Portugal, arriving middayish on Friday, leaving midday Tuesday. As we don’t have much time as it is he’s suggested we just take a carry on bag (46x36x20cm average backpack size) each.

I’ve been with him for less than a year and due to lockdown it will be the first time I’ve spent more than a couple of days with him. He seems to think I’m pretty low maintenance and I haven’t done anything to suggest otherwise. But having looked at a bag that size it will hardly fit my makeup and straighteners, let alone any clothes Sad.

Could you do it? I think if I wear leggings, trainers, jumper, jacket on the plane then in my bag I’ll just need underwear, sandals, bikini, couple of dresses, shorts and a couple of tops. It would involve very little makeup though. Straighteners are non-negotiable as I have a fringe which is determined to stick straight up.

Any tips?

@RazorstormUnicorn

Me too. I find it incredibly wasteful. And expensive!! Im not high maintenance at all, but my make alone would cost more than a hold suitcase and way more than the easyjet "hands free" deal (which I actually think is awesome).

We have a wheelchair that has to go in the hold and often wont appear until baggage reclaim. Nearly everytime weve flown in the last 5 years, the wheelchair and hold luggage has appeared before us.

Waiting to pick up a bag v shopping for toiletries when you get there, it'll take the same amount of time, and you'll be able to shower straight away at your hotel and get going.

OverByYer · 27/05/2021 10:42

I do hope the era of carry on luggage is passed. Nothing more irritating than being stuck behind people going through security who haven’t already sorted their toiletries ( my mate being one of them) then watching people trying to squish everything into overhead lockers. It’s far more relaxing taking what you need in a proper case, checking it in and wandering duty free with only a handbag to worry about

LizzieMacQueen · 27/05/2021 10:52

Agreed @OverByYer

The airlines have taken their time acknowledging the problem, their own making, charging ££ for hold luggage.

Movinghouseatlast · 27/05/2021 10:56

I would pay for Upfront seats as you get more carry on luggage allowance- a small carry on case plus a handbag.

I used to travel every weekend had solid deodorant, body lotion even serum ( from Lush) I used Bare Minerals powder foundation. I had the towelette insect repellent. Soap for the shower.

I could get 5 days worth of moisturiser etc in the little plastic bag.

I always bought sunscreen at the airport and took an empty bottle to decant any leftovers into.

Notavegan · 27/05/2021 10:58

My friend did this, it rained for days (portugal) and she didn't even have a coat, let alone enough clothes. I always pay, it can ruin your holiday.

Changemusthappen · 27/05/2021 11:02

I've done this, just wear all extra stuff especially heaviest shoes etc. Also think about what you will be doing, for example don't wear trainers for the flight if they aren't going to be worn whilst you are there.

Max liquid is 100ml per item with an overall max of 1000ml. Buy toiletries after checkin but do look at what time you are flying to check the shops are open!

Hazelnutlatteplease · 27/05/2021 11:46

@Changemusthappen unless you've travelled since feb you haven't done this. As mentioned above the rules are changed

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/05/2021 12:06

I would really struggle with this - if I am going away I want to look and feel nice, and would want to have a change of outfit for going out for dinner, for example. I definitely do not want to be washing things in the sink. So I would pay for hold luggage.

My tip if you are going for the cabin bag would be midi skirts and t-shirts/tops rather than dresses, then you can mix and match a bit. If you do the Kon Marie fold for tees they will roll up teeny tiny. I always decant products into those little bottles from Boots - you can get a sort of pack thing that comes in a clear makeup bag which has a good selection. I would also chance buying things like sunscreen, shower gel etc there rather than cart it with me.

HereWeGoAgainPart2 · 27/05/2021 12:06

coffeepot72 no, it’s not worth it at all 😂. I was attempting to maintain his idea of me as being laidback and not bothered about how I look when I actually spend 40 minutes getting ready everyday and need to take about a kilo of makeup with me that is worth about £500 just to look passable. I know I have to let it go and start farting and looking rough around him at some point, I was just hoping I could hold off a bit longer.

changemusthappen flight is at about 7.30 and even if shops are open there’s only a coffee shop and a small duty free type shop as it’s a little regional airport.

@HereWeGoAgainPart2 I think my DH realised quite early on that I wasn’t a “travel light” sort of girl … hasn’t harmed our relationship though!

whiteroseredrose · 27/05/2021 12:40

I checked the EasyJet website earlier. If you get the Upfront extra legroom seats you can take the normal sized cabin bag. Last time we went it was about £21 per seat each way.

The OP has already said that all of those seats have gone.

I know I have to let it go and start farting and looking rough around him at some point, I was just hoping I could hold off a bit longer.

Do you keep your make up on when you go to bed as well?

CupoTeap · 27/05/2021 13:58

An you still take a handbag, or is that kit allowed?

Hazelnutlatteplease · 27/05/2021 14:08

One bag 45 x 36 x 20 cm no handbag. Everything in the bag (or your pockets). There a few extra like Walking sticks, umbrella, bag of duty free, water bottle.

My friend did this, it rained for days (portugal) and she didn't even have a coat,

I Always pack a pac a mac and a packable down jacket. Covers whatever the weather. Really cold I wear both. (I have a set of everyone hidden in the car too)

limesoda · 27/05/2021 14:30

I travel very light (once took an old cabin sized bag for a three week trip across siberia in winter. Can fit all my stuff into a single motorbike pannier for a fortnight riding across Europe) as does DH but when things start to get a wee bit stressful, we always just pay for a bag. It's amazing how much space an extra book or hair straighteners or camera or whatever can take up.

Agreeing with the excitement of thinking about this stuff though!

HereWeGoAgainPart2 · 27/05/2021 19:01

rampantivy I have eyelash extensions and wear tinted moisturiser and lip stain to bed 😬. I climbed Kilimanjaro a few years ago and was told off for getting up early and putting on make up before we summited. I’m an otherwise pretty laid back person, I just like my face to be all the same colour.

OP posts:
Coffeepot72 · 27/05/2021 19:16

There is nothing wrong with wearing make up on Kilimanjaro 😜

RampantIvy · 27/05/2021 19:42

I bet you look nicer without make up than you think you do. I like freckles BTW.

Angelica789 · 27/05/2021 21:56

You can pay extra for an overhead locker bag without booking the upfront seats I think. I would do this. There is no way you want to try and live out of a Kanken size bag for 4 days.

Seesawmummadaw · 27/05/2021 22:14

Look on Pinterest for packing tips. I love the challenge of travelling light! Much easier on a sunshine holiday where you wear a lot less!

IloveJudgeJudy · 28/05/2021 00:08

The thing with wearing lots of clothes when leaving the uk to maximise space in your carryon is all very well as the uk weather on the way out is usually cool but you have to wear the same clothes on the way back from sunnier climes which will be uncomfortable.

Just pay for hold luggage. You'll spend more time tracking down whatever you've not brought with you in Portugal than you will just waiting for your luggage.

HeronLanyon · 28/05/2021 01:13

I’d just pay for a suitcase. Haven’t ever begrudged time spent waiting for it (unless you know the destination airport and there’s a mas scrum for hire cars or taxis or whatever). I’d really miss not being able to bring anything id blight out there back !

HeronLanyon · 28/05/2021 01:14

Bought not blight
