Am I asking too much?

I have only recently been converted to the idea of wearing a daily spf and after reading about it I really want to use a mineral product. I had no idea how bad chemical sunscreen was for the environment.

I have tried Tropic tinted spf. It goes in lovely and smells Devine but I find my skin feels tight and dry by the end of the day. I tried The ordinary SPF. Not withstanding the terrible grey cast, once I've rubbed it in enough it does seem to dry and soak in well but it leaves my eyes stinging and it's quite sticky/oily to apply. I've also bought the cerave spf moisturiser which I quite like but it's only spf 25.

So, can anyone recommend anything to fit the following criteria

  • Affordable - I just can't keep throwing money at products, especially as you're meant to reapply every two hours (I am not doing this currently!)
  • mineral with SPF 50
  • no white/grey cast
  • non drying for older skin

Clinique cityblock up to spf 40.
Heliocare is also good but maybe a bit pricier.
Ultrasun is my favourite.

I like Heliocare.

The thing I have an issue with is: if you’re supposed to reapply every 2 hours, how on earth does that work with wearing make up? (Foundation, BB cream etc)? Am I supposed to cleanse and start from scratch every 2 hours all day?

Asking because I have rosacea and my GP has told me to add a proper sunscreen to my skincare rather than relying on a moisturiser that has an SPF, but I just don’t see how to!

^this! I have no idea either! I have seen some videos where women seem to reapply spf in powder form through the day after initial application of cream based product.

I suppose another option would be to buy foundation with spf built in?

I use Heliocare and apply once in the morning. My foundation has SPF built in so hoping the two together works well enough.

You only need to reapply every 2 hours if you are out in the sun that whole time (it would be less time for me, so I'd wear a hat and find shade!).

I wear Neostrata Sheer Physical Protection SPF 50 and have done for years. A tube is £31 and it lasts me a couple of months with daily wear.

SPF in foundation would never have enough protection.

Sunsense tinted spf.
Brilliant and v reasonably priced

Just had a look at reviews and saw the Clinique one is on offer at the minute so I took a chance and ordered some. I now have plenty to last me through the summer (and I'm desperate to use up the awful 'The Ordinary' product because I can't bear to waste it even though it's grim)

Lots of great suggestions. I'm going to try the Clinique then come back here when I need to restock and try a few brands.

Just thought I would update. Have been using the Clinique city life and it's fantastic. Goes on really light, covers well, not sticky and doesn't leave a white cast. I'm converted!

I’ve not tried this spf version but I use the regular one either on its own or under makeup and find it brilliant.

Bondi Sands does a spf 50 face sunscreen. It’s unscented and doesn’t pill, works well with makeup on top. It’s also cruelty free. Costs about £7 but it’s often on offer, Superdrug currently has it for £3.50.

I struggle with the idea of reapplying every few hours if I'm in the sun all day.
The best think I've found so far is the pixie spray spf.

It goes on light and sinks in quickly, sits on with make up.

I'd be really interested in any powder spf products people use as my life is a constant battle against shine!

Boots mineral foundation is a factor 25 sunscreen as well

Binglebong · 15/07/2021 22:22

I came across a spray one that goes over makeup. Unfortunately it is sold out everywhere and I can't find another.
