Has anyone recently had a perm?

I have super straight hair, not coloured for years. Its mid length and in good condition...would a perm be madness? I dont want to damage my hair but I love curly hair and on the odd occasion I have curled mine it drops out in an hour. I've always wanted to give it a try....not 80's style though! Has anyone had one and loved it?

I've been perming my hair for 20 years as it suits me better. I have it shoulder-length with a lose curl (not the dreaded 80s poodle look at all). I get a lot of compliments for my hair - people assume it's natural, they can't tell the difference.

Pros - zero effort. I let my hair air dry and it falls naturally. I do literally nothing to it, ever.
Cons - can't ever confess I'm doing this and have a pact with my lovely hairdresser to keep shtum. People in the UK are funny about perms (disclaimer: I wasn't born here).

Tbh I don't understand why they're not more popular so I'd say go for it!

loOse, argh

@tetha thanks! I think I might take the plunge. I let my hair air dry already and the low maintenance definately appeals!

Would anyone share pics of their natural vs permed hair.
I’m all about air dry / low maintenance and have thick healthy (see air dry comment) that is wavy at the back and straight at the sides. Is this the answer for me?

SwimmingOnEggshells · 25/05/2021 13:33

@tetha Your hair that sounds lovely. I think they used to call that a body wave?

DadsTrilby · 25/05/2021 13:34

My friend had one, she was promised a lovely loose curl but it was very 80s style frizz and she’s desperate to grow it out.

I think you will have to shop around for a reputable hairdresser who is qualified in doing perms. I'm not even sure they're still on the training schedule for most colleges (could be wrong there). A decent perm should not be frizzy and not damage your hair. I've never had any issues and I've been to 4+ different hairdressers in this country over the years.

God I used to love my perm back in the day. I’d have another one but had assumed hairdressers didn’t do them anymore

SwimmingOnEggshells · 25/05/2021 14:09

Many hairdressers might not even know how to do them, you'd have to be very careful who you get to do it I think.

just saw your post @tetha, I think you're right, it's not taught as standard anymore.
