What's going on with clothes?

I don't buy often, used to, but lost interest in it years ago and spend most of my time now in practical, weather related stuff and leggings/yoga stuff, haha.

However, I am in dire need of a couple of light frocks for summer. To wear with my birks and my old superga.

Problem is, no matter where I look, everything looks shit.
John Lewis, Hush, White Co, places I once kind of gravitated to. Stuff looks thin of not well cut, and either too voluminous or shiny - which is nothing new these days, but you used to be able to get something if you paid a bit extra.

The only place ive seen decent looking dresses is toast, which is extortionate, but since I don't buy often, I don't mind. That said, ive seen the threads on here saying they are performing badly with deliveries and returns.

Where can I find decent stuff that isn't too trend oriented, but will last a few years?
Ive tried Plumo (too arty), COS (too structured and not really me), fat face (bland) and M&S and so on. I kind of like Poetry but nothing is in stock until July (sod that).
Nothing!

I just keep returning to outdoor stuff, which is always good - like Fjallraven and Arc'teryx. But they don't do frocks!

Any ideas?

I buy second hand for this exact reason. I can buy the good, well made stuff at reasonable prices. Try Vinted for a good selection, it’s a good well organised website & the sellers are decent.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2021 09:59

I've ordered some t shirts from Poetry and was advised they'd arrive in late June - they've all arrived 6 weeks early.

faithinnature1 · 23/05/2021 10:01

Try finisterre for outdoorsy but still some casual summer dresses

squashyhat · 23/05/2021 10:05

Joe Browns have a huge range of reasonably priced dresses.

Hoppinggreen · 23/05/2021 10:06

I have recently discovered Oliver Bonas. I like their home ware but didn’t know they did clothes really

northbacchus · 23/05/2021 10:33

What summer? Hmm

Wolf and Badger, Anthropologie and Ganni, plus I've had varying degrees of luck on the Outnet!

Look at the quality of stitching and be fussy when it comes to the material, which usually seems to help with clothes lasting.

Ariela · 23/05/2021 10:39

I've a lovely one from Mountain Warehouse

Floisme · 23/05/2021 10:48

I think what's going on with most retailers is that their last two seasons tanked and they're fighting for the lives (and making a poor fist of it).

I rate Community Clothing for quality (last bought from them in Jan 2020) and some of their dresses have a bit of a Toast vibe.

There's a thread around somewhere about alternatives to Sezane which has a few suggestions, mostly European.

Arket seems to generally get approval regarding its quality (same stable as Cos H&M etc) but I've never seen it in real life.

onemouseplace · 23/05/2021 10:55

I've got a lovely dress from Arket that is just the right shape for me, but it is still bloody polyester (and was over £100 so not cheap!).

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 23/05/2021 11:40

I don’t think you can get a dress anywhere for less than £100 that is nice fabric as well as being well made, well designed and not made in awful conditions, tbh.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 23/05/2021 11:53

The price/quality balance is all out of whack.

Whistles charge £150 plus for viscose/polyester that is crappy quality; I bought a £49 midaxi dress in M&S from ethically sourced cotton which is far superior quality.

Have a Sézane order coming so will see what that is like - I did refuse to pay £90 for a Astro t shirt though....

Agree with Community Clothing but they are all about the basics - not much to update a core wardrobe,

QueenAdreena · 23/05/2021 11:56

I’m not fussy on fabrics so don’t check what my clothes are made of, but have bought a couple of lovely summer dresses from Monsoon recently

Fferny1 · 23/05/2021 12:03

There are loads of decent dresses in cotton/linen on the H&M website. I buy a lot of things off here in the Summer as they always do natural fabrics. In the same I buy Cashmere in Winter from other shops. Cos & Arket are also good.
Oysho do fantastic summer clothes.

Please stop saying certain shops are down market. Just because an item is expensive polyester it doesn't mean it's any better quality. The more expensive brands often have no better eco or other credentials.

LaBellina · 23/05/2021 12:05

Uniqlo. They call it ‘life wear’ for a reason, quality is good and it’s supposed to last a long time.

LetSophieGo · 23/05/2021 14:43

Thank you for so many ideas and recommendations!
I am a bit fussy and it takes me a while to trust a brand, but I honestly can't deal with the high street at all now, not even the highest price points.
Everything has become homogenised : the same styles and fabrics across the board...thin, synthetic, badly cut. I don't mind synthetic but not for dresses and tees.

I get nightwear from white company - it lasts and washes so well, so don't mid buying a few pieces a year.

The only dresses I can stand right now are at toast, and I deeply resent them for not showing them all on a model, it's like they are taking the piss.

I am sure the mountain warehouse dresses are usually knee length - bot so great if I want calk length, will have. look though. Tend not to like pattern, so even the Toast stuff is a bit wild for me;)

Sadly I have never got the Uniqlo thing. Tried them out over the years and never got a decent fit, I just don't think the styles suit me.

Off to have a look around!

calf length

Baukjen are good quality and score highly for ethics but are quite pricey. I've had some nice dresses from Weird Fish, but most of them (not all) are patterned. I've got a denim midi from them that gets loads of compliments.

TiddleTaddleTat · 23/05/2021 15:37

Haven't RTFT but I have found some good gems on eBay lately (secondhand stuff from whistles, cos etc). I've also sold some bits for stupidly low prices so I think it's a buyers market on there for clothes right now.

Evenstar · 23/05/2021 15:40

Crew had some nice cotton jersey dresses last year

lindyloo57 · 23/05/2021 15:54

I been buying on ebay more , brands I know warehouse, oasis, m and s, Topshop somethings I do have to resell as not suiting/ fitting me, brought a lovely yellow coat new with tags m&S under £25. can't believe it didn't fit in the size 10 that's the chance you take.

LetSophieGo · 23/05/2021 15:56

There seem to be some odd gaps with quality. Everything that satisfies me has a mind boggling price tag (and I don't do designer). However, when I try to lower the price point the clothes really take a slump in quality, like falling off a precipice.

It's like there is no middle ground :(

@LetSophieGo I’ve got some nice dresses from Thought

www.wearethought.com/women/organic-cotton-dresses/all-dresses

I’ve only ever paid sale prices so even better value. They wash well and they fit me really nicely.

CaramelWaferAndTea · 23/05/2021 16:11

The best dress I’ve bought for years came in my first stitch fix box. Also got a new linen dress from M&S recently which I was surprised about!
