I know people are against Tropics but I've just bought some and it's actually the best I've used.

I am against MLM but is Tropics really one? Anyway, my friends has started doing it, she's not pushy and I thought I'd try it and I'm actually really impressed, especially by the cleanser which is definitely the best I've ever used. Is it really that unethical?

Yes it really is.

I've always heard the products are very good.

But I'd rather not buy from that business model. There are other good products out there.

Hoppinggreen · 21/05/2021 22:31

I really like some of it and so does DD
I have a friend who sells it but she also works FT and doesn’t put crap on FB etc about it. I have told her I will never have a party or become an ambassador or whatever else they call themselves and if she starts with the nonsense I won’t buy any more.

JoyOrbison · 21/05/2021 22:32

I buy the face masks off ebay when so. Eone is clear g their kit out or so. Eone is flogging an unwanted gift Grin

Yes, same. My friend works in another job, she sells to friends so she can have discounts off the products for herself. I also do not want to host a party or become an ambassador!

Potentially exploitative business model which targets women. I personally would not touch it. Susan Ma didn’t have to go down that route but she did because it’s highly lucrative for the MLM owners with zero staff costs and zero protection for those “independent business owners”.

leeds2glasgow · 22/05/2021 00:32

Yes. It really is.

I read this article about tropic which I thought was pretty interesting. There's no denying the model but it does seem that susie Ma is trying to do something different.

I have to say I've recently tried some of the products which I really like. I can't say I've compared them to high street products as I've gone from no skincare to tropic but I do like what I've read and what I've tried.

enjoysun · 22/05/2021 10:17

It's an mlm. The product might be the greatest thing since sliced bread ( but usually isn't, hence why not stock it in the shops?) but I would absolutely avoid it. MLMs are potentially exploitive preying on vulnerable people. The sellers/ambassadors/huns usually take advantages of their family and friends seeing them as their potential sales targets snd they can get very irritating on FB. Some are worse than others. I've got a friend who sells sort of coffee that is the new wonder cure for Covid I'll have you know!

This is a generic statement about MLM's but it doesn't necessarily represent individual companies. My experience of Tropic is that I haven't been subjected to any hard selling despite two of my colleagues being ambassadors and as the article above says, the company appear to be trying hard to address the problems that can arise. As I say I am the first to avoid the MLM huns but I just haven't seen it with Tropic....yet. I think it's a youngish company though so it remains to be seen if it gets too big and out of hand. I do adore the cleanser though.
YouokHun · 26/05/2021 19:54

I question the motives of any company that chooses the MLM business model @snowdropsandcrocuses. I have met plenty of people losing money (or at least not making any)from their involvement in Tropic even when bolting it on to a successful beauty business. It starts out well for the ones I’ve met but the products are very expensive and it is difficult to get enough customers who are repeat business to sell what one needs to sell consistently to make money. For most it’s pocket money and propped up by a partner’s earnings or a proper job; this middle class Hun-ing obscures the viability of the “Tropic opportunity”. Surely if you actually need to earn a proper wage every month from it then the only way to do that is to expand your network by building a team? And building a team of Ambassadors is an option isn’t it? It seems to me that S Ma’s statements about Tropic don’t entirely match up with the behaviour I’ve seen on Facebook etc. I’m not convinced Tropic deserves to be let off the hook.

snowdropsandcrocuses · 26/05/2021 20:05

Yeah I definitely can't argue with you about the more advanced business model because I don't know anyone that does it for more than pocket money. The two I know both work full time and signed up to Tropic as they use the products and wanted discounted prices.

It's interesting you say the products are pricey because I thought the same when I was buying a few. But then when I looked around at other comparative products it seems mid range.

I definitely am not convinced Tropic are 'off the hook' as you say but I have been pleasantly surprised in my own experience of it and the article I posted seems to demonstrate Susie Ma is trying to address the concerns. I suppose it becomes a problem when you try to make a living solely from selling their products. It's unfortunate that the products I have used are so lovely!

MayflowerMaisie · 26/05/2021 20:18

There are a few companies out there that shoot themselves in the foot with the business model they choose. I’d probably buy from Tropic, Beauty Pie, and Fabletics from time to time. But I absolutely won’t buy from an MLM, or sign up for a subscription service.
If the product is good enough, they shouldn’t make you jump through hoops to buy it!
