Recommend skincare & makeup for DD1

I've NC so that this post isn't associated with my other posts.

DD1 is 32 soon.
She has 2 DCs, a job and is married.
She's very busy.

Her skin is a dry with occasional, savage breakouts.
She's got the beginning of a few fine lines.
Skin tone is uneven.

Her colouring; hair is brown & very similar to Kate Middleton's in colour and thickness, her skin tone is Caucasian, pale with pink undertones, her eyes are navy blue.

The last person she thinks about is herself.
For her birthday I thought that I would treat her to complete skincare and makeup.
Although I want to treat her any products have to be affordable enough for her to repurchase when they run out, though she would splurge on 1 or 2 products.
Makeup has to be quick & easy to apply. Simple but effective.

I have made a list, but would like MN recommendations.

I’m a couple of years older than your daughter and would really appreciate a beauty subscription box to be able to try lots of different brands etc that I wouldn’t usually have the money to try then she could repurchase ones she likes. The excitement of that through the door each month would be so good! Otherwise there is so much choice! Maybe glossier would be a fun choice and maybe paulas choice for more targeted skincare? Elf get good reviews for cheap and cheerful stuff too.

3peassuit · 21/05/2021 11:52

I would look at a subscription to a dermatology service like Dermatica or Skin and Me.

UserAtRandom · 21/05/2021 11:59

Just throwing this in there - but does she actually want skincare and makeup? I don't spend much time on my skin or wear makeup, but that's from choice. I wouldn't appreciate someone "splashing out" on my behalf.

Obviously different if she just can't afford products or have time to spend, but would like to.

HelpForDD1 · 21/05/2021 13:30

I'm throwing this right back at you @UserAtRandom; I knew that someone would write a post just like yours.
Of course I asked her what she wanted, I have checked to be sure too.

DD doesn't have the time to choose skincare. She wouldn't know where to start her words and she doesn't like spending money on herself.

@Kjr33 thank you, I was thinking Paulas Choice/Medik8 but was waiting to see whether anyone would suggest it & I am thinking along the right lines.

I do appreciate the happiness of a subscription box arriving but in the past I have found that yes, you'll find products that you like, but you get lots of stuff that you don't want or need too.

@3peassuit Dermatica or Skin and Me is a good idea, I'll take a look.

@HelpForDD1 I would highly recommend Medik8 I am 32 and have been using for the past 5 years. I wouldn't change it and its easily available online

Deathraystare · 21/05/2021 15:45

Not sure about skincare but I reckon Bobbi Brown would be good for make up. Actually my skin gets rather dry and I love the vitamin skin cream.

Kjr33 · 21/05/2021 16:55

I would use any bits I didn’t like in a subscription box as mini gifts for friends etc so for me it would kill two birds with one stone! I get that it would be annoying if you are paying for the subscription box yourself but if it were a gift I wouldn’t mind so much.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/05/2021 19:04

What about a make up lesson with a make up artist so she can do it all quickly?.

HelpForDD1 · 21/05/2021 20:41

Hello @Imamess13 I've tried a few retinol products, Medik8 is the best that I have found and it's my go-to. I wasn't sure whether it would be suitable for younger skin, if you're saying that you have used it and liked it that's good enough for me.

@Deathraystare that's a really good idea, thank you. For some reason I don't think of Bobbi Brown for makeup, but that is spot on. I'll take a look.

I get it @Kjr33, beauty boxes make a great gift. Personally Fab, Fit, Fun is my favourite and there's rarely a duff product among them. Trouble is that when you go to repurchase something you really like their products tend to be expensive.

DD has been using Clinique Dramatically Different cleanser, toner, moisturiser for many years. When we talked about what she was after she asked what she could do about her skin, I think that she wants a routine. Of course, she may not like some of the things that we buy her but we will gift them with the proviso that I will change anything that she doesn't get on with.

@Fluffycloudland77 that's a good idea, we could go together.

As we will purchase a retinol does anyone have any thoughts on tinted moisturiser with SPF or a good sunscreen that doesn't pill or become chalky and a tinted product to go with it?

Another vote for a subscription to skin + me. I’ve been quite interested in skincare for a couple of years but I’ve been using it since Tuesday and it’s actually made a big difference already. I had a breakout recently due to eating crappy food and it’s cleared my skin way quicker than it would normally clear. It’s simplified my routine as there are three ingredients in the prescription. I genuinely think it’s great. If you wanted to let her try it before paying £20 a month you can use this code which means you only pay £3.50 for the first and fifth month. I used a code to try it myself but I would definitely pay the £20 next month as I’m finding it really effective and easy.

My goal is actually to wear less makeup so can’t help you on that front, though at the moment I use The Ordinary serum foundation which is really light, comes in a lot of shades and is super cheap.

I’m still on a mission to find an SPF I like, but I just bought La Roche Posay hyalu B5 SPF 30 gel which is really light and pleasant to apply. Slightly fragranced though which I dislike, but doesn’t smell like usual SPF so could suit some people.

doadeer · 22/05/2021 09:11

Lovely present! I did this for my sister last year.
I'm 31 with a toddler so I can tell you what I use.

I love the m&s rose cleansing balm, then the Ren gel Cleanser - might be good to buy a set of soft flannels aswell.

Some days I used Medik8 6 (have worked up so you can get her the low level)

Other days I use a Ren AHA to exfoliate. A BHA like Paula's Choice would be good for her.

I love the espa serum it's so hydrating.

I use a simple moisturiser and Sunday Riley facial oils but you could use rosehip oil which isn't too expensive.

I always use Spf 50, la Roche posay or garnier

Make up wise, I wear erborian cc cream which is great for a busy mum. Then I wear a skin tint occasionally from beauty pie. The and other stories lip balm is lovely.

Other thing would be a vitamin c for the morning would be nice. Oskia is a lux one, la Roche posay is a mid range and maybe the ordinary for a budget one.

Wow that's long! Hope it helps

Kjr33 · 22/05/2021 09:16

If you will be buying retinol I think you should use a proper sunscreen not a tinted product (you need to use a lot of sunscreen and using it in a foundation etc leads to not using enough) I like the biore watery gel, my next try is going to be cosrx I don’t like mineral ones but other people say they are less irritating so might be worth a try. My sunscreen recommendations come from labmuffin beauty who is a beauty blogger or whatever who has a science background and stuff so she really analyses the product and is great for busting myths about sunscreen. Would highly recommend having a look at her site

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/05/2021 09:50

Would she consider an LVL (eyelash list+tint) and a brow shape/tint?
You could buy her a voucher for a salon (shell need a patch test)

My DD had LVL a fw times and the results were fabulous and lasted 6+weeks - basically the lifespan of the eyelash .

Urban Decay eyeshadow palette ( Naked ones) last forever and good range of colours

And brushes -good set makes it all easier to apply

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/05/2021 09:51

lift and tint

DaisyRenton18 · 22/05/2021 10:51

What a lovely treat. I'd love this!
Bobbi Brown will do free makeup lessons (which includes skincare as a starting point) - what about doing that together and then treating her to some of the products from that session that she has been able to try? Would be a nice thing to do together too as you say.

HelpForDD1 · 22/05/2021 20:21

I'm really pleased that your skin has been sorted by your subscription @Megmargs, thank you for your good advice. We've spent the day with DD & co today, after the PP yesterday recommending a subscription box I asked DD about it. Together we had a look at Dermatica and Skin + Me, DD said that she would prefer products that she can repurchase on the high street. I understand her logic. OTOH I might look at a skin subscription for myself

The LRP gel sounds really as a possible sunscreen. How does makeup sit over the top of it? Does it pill?

Wow @doadeer I'm definitely going to buy some of those products for DD, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you

That's great advice @Kjr33. It seems to be the eternal conundrum, it's certainly a problem for me: finding a sunscreen that doesn't irritate, isn't chalky, doesn't pill and that works well under makeup. I can't find it for myself, let alone buying it for DD. Cult Beauty and Feelunique both sell samples, I might see what they've got and tell DD that I will buy the full sized version of whichever one she likes the best.

Personally I like serums but I don't trust them to provide reliable sun protection, I would be really happy to be proven wrong.

@70isaLimitNotaTarget I have been looking at the Naked palettes for DD! Not just because of their range and versatility but also because they make an attractive present.

The LVL sounds like a brilliant idea and again, it could be something that we can do together if she likes and she probably will.

@DaisyRenton18 yes, that's what I was thinking, that we'd leave the DGCs with SiL and go to Bobbi Brown. I'm not sure whether I'll get my own makeup done but it would be great for DD.

Megmargs · 22/05/2021 21:48

@HelpForDD1 the LRP isn’t my favourite, it’s nice to apply but I’m still looking for my perfect SPF. I was supposed to have one delivered today but it’s been delivered to a neighbour but I haven’t been told which one 🙄 also got another one on order so I will report back! I’m very particular about what I want though and can feel even very light products on my skin so more normal people might be fine haha. I’ll update you once I’ve got hold of the other two.

mocktheweek1 · 22/05/2021 21:52

It's not really a huge splurge but I've never been in to skincare but I done the quiz on the Ordinary site to see what my skin needed as I was clueless and bought the regime they suggested. I think it's helping my skin and per product it's only about £5-8 to repurchase

Kjr33 · 22/05/2021 22:17

Ah yes the serum suncream would be a holy grail but I’m not convinced a good one exists???? Kylie Jenner did a sunscreen that Susan yara from mixed make up rated highly..........but £30 ish is a lot when the biore (while not perfect) is more like £10 ish

Imamess13 · 23/05/2021 10:41

My facialist and Caroline Hurons (her book could also make a great present) recommend this suncream and it’s super cheap but amazing...basically acts as a primer under make up and is dermatologically tested www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06X6LZWRC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_N1GP0QNMZZKEY7C8X48Y?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Imamess13 · 23/05/2021 10:41

*Caroline Hirons

Kjr33 · 23/05/2021 11:39

@Imamess13 I like the look of that thank you for the recommendation

HelpForDD1 · 23/05/2021 21:06

Ach that's a shame @Megmargs, I'm weird about things on my skin too. Though I like oils and thick moisturisers. I'm allergic to some things too, which makes it even more difficult to find products that I like. DD is weird about things on her skin too, which is why I had high hopes for the gel sunscreen.
Please do an update with your review of the others.

@mocktheweek1 did you use The Ordinary products before 2018? I'm asking because I found that their quality was variable back then. Since that time I swerve them. I would be really happy to be proven wrong.

I've already bought one of those sunscreens on the back of your recommendation @Imamess13. Fingers crossed that it's excellent. Do you use foundation on top?

SPF review!

This is what I’ve used this morning:
www.superdrug.com/Skin/Face-Skin-Care/Anti-Ageing-Face-Cream/Skin-Generics-Spf30-Multi-Shield-50Ml-24%25-Active-Complex/p/808112?singleResultSearchPage=true

Pros:

  • Really lightweight, can’t really feel it on my skin at all!
  • Gel texture
  • Spreads easily
  • Nice to apply, feels a little tingly/cooling which I imagine would be nice on a hot day
  • Makeup sits really nicely over the top
  • Doesn’t pill (I used a good amount)
  • not shiny/greasy

Cons:

  • spf 30 rather than 50 (I’ve got a 50 coming in the post)
  • it’s in a little jar and I wish it was a tube or pump

Would definitely recommend it, best I’ve tried so far and much prefer it to LRP.

This morning my routine was:
Cleanse with ordinary squalane cleanser
The ordinary hyaluronic acid
The ordinary ascorbyl glucoside (vit c derivative)
The ordinary natural moisturising factors
SPF linked above
The ordinary serum foundation

...yeah I like the ordinary Grin
