Fit and flare dress??

Any suggestions for how to make a fit and flare dress look a bit more modern?
I bought it for a wedding years ago and haven’t worn it much since. Now it feels very dated Sad. Am trying to shop my wardrobe rather than buy new.
The cut is the same as this one but in a slightly different print
Am also open to doing some alterations

Do you still want to wear it to a wedding or event? I would say an oversized blazer and a block healed sandal.

The obvious thing to do would be to take off the cap sleeves and put short puff sleeves on it. You could also take it up a bit if you have good legs and feel comfortable in short skirts as minis are in.

I'd wear that with a denim or leather jacket and ankle boots. No strapping shoes as they'll make it look more dated.

Oh good suggestions, thanks. I think I will try it with maybe trainers and a denim jacket. Also maybe get the sleeves taken off. I like the idea of the puff sleeves but I don’t know what fabric to use as it is a very distinct pattern.
It’s more for slightly dressed up every day rather than an event. God knows when I’ll actually get to go to an event again!

Depending on how extreme you're prepared to make your alterations you could turn it into an apron-style neckline wirh shoulder straps and wear a polo neck underneath

I've unpicked a couple of dresses at the bodice and worn them as tops. It's a bigger job if it's lined and / or has a full length zip.

You could do puff sleeves out of tulle (pick in a colour from the pattern).
I’m not at all fashionable but I do love big puffy sleeves!

Erm, I think that is already a short dress.

Grin It is but Sixties style minis are coming in so two or three inches off the skirt length would make it more fashionable without being too revealing.

Ah, that is a fashion I won't be following. IMO micro minis really are for the younger generation (I won't see 60 again, for context)

Belt?

Trinny W has a good video on updating an out-of-date dress

I wear fit and flair style dresses, as they are comfortable and suit my figure. I dress up with a smart jacket, maybe a more interesting shoe and wear the same dresses (some are lace with embroidery) with a jeans jacket, flats and some bolder jewellery. To be honest, I wear sequin t-shirts with jeans, dress up whenever I can and think if the last year or so has taught us anything it is to wear what makes you happy. Just go for it!
