How to dress in a classic style whilst still looking youthful

I love to dress in quite a classic style. My go-to uniform for everyday is something like a navy blue striped breton top, dark blue skinny jeans and white Converse. However, as I'm only 25 sometimes I feel like I'm dressing in a way that makes me seem older than I am, especially when I compare how I dress to my friends.

Does anyone have any advice on how to achieve the classic kind of style whilst still looking modern and not too dated?

Thank you

I actually think that, unless you have a particularly mature demeanor and face, you can get away with dressing really classic at 25.

I'm 37 and love the classic look, but my concern is that at my age it will really age me. I've just started following a youtuber called Lydia Tomlinson and she seems to wear pretty classic clothing and she looks wonderful and not old.

I love straight cut jeans, (I'm not sure skinnies actually are a classic cut tbh), white t-shirt and black or beige blazer. Very classic and I don't think it's old hat, but I await correction Grin

I think style is really subjective though isn't it- what one person will consider as uber stylish, someone else might think is too safe or too OTT. I'm mid thirties and love good tailoring and quite muted colour palettes (literally all the greys and navy's. I even discovered a new colour called "greige" the other day which just goes to show how boring I am these days noticing details like that haha).

I try to balance the "plain-ness" of my clothes (i.e. NO clashing bright colours, hardly ever prints) with lots of silver jewellery. I personally feel its a balance that kind of works. Well, it works for me anyway and think it balances the smartness with things that make my outfit look interesting (maybe).

If looking for inspiration, have you looked on Instagram or Pinterest, sounds abit lame but you could find a few looks that you like and literally copy them.

Accessories, or adding a more youthful item to a mainly classic outfit.

It’s a very Mum look www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/skinny-jeans-indigo/sty-t0366-den?cat=C1_S2_G964

Ditch the skinny jeans and wear a more trendy style. Look for interesting details on classic style clothing, unusual sleeves etc. Hair and accessories are also key, they can make a classic style look less frumpy.

A fab haircut can fix this dilemma, I find.

Also, not all skinny jeans and breton tops are created equally. Make sure they fit you perfectly, and they won't age you at all.

Dark blue straight leg jeans instead of skinny, and an on-trend Breton - boxy not fitted. I wore this today!
Agree it’s accessories, shoes and bags that can turn it from boring to interesting. Converse are pretty ageless, but not exactly cool with a plain outfit. They’re a bread and butter item for when you don’t need to add any more interest. Maybe have a look for a more modern trainer you like (Veja, new balance?) and a cool bag that’s “you” to elevate classic outfits. Also sunglasses, belts.

If your natural style is classic, then you will look fabulous dressing that way and other people will wonder why they look boring like that but you look classy and elegant.

I realise I'm quite out of place on S&B, because to me dressing the way you want and feel happiest, rather than on trend, is the best way to look good. Fashion's what you buy, style is how you wear it, or whatever that quote is!!

Shoes and bags are everything, keep your footwear modern in particular and its half the battle. Definitely agree with lydia tomlinson suggestion, find a few instagrammers you like and you'll see how they keep the look youthful

Here's a version of jeans and a Breton that looks youthful and current.

Shape of the jeans, shade of denim, belt, jewellery, cut of the Breton, etc make all the difference.

M&S have jeans in a similar style if you want to give it a try. Add an olive green utility jacket on chilly days ( everyday really!)
