Flat shoes to wear with skirts and dresses

I have plantar fasciitis so wearing high heels is no longer possible. I’ve been told to wear a flatish shoe with a very low heel, so what would look good that I could wear for work with not just trousers but skirts and dresses?

Or would flat shoes (not ballet flats) just look frumpy?

I’m a big fan of brogues. They work with dresses and trousers and you can get summery ones and darker winter ones.

Ultimately, most outfits look better with heels, that might be my social conditioning coming out, but it is the truth (IMO). That doesn't mean that flat shoes are automatically frumpy and can't also look good. I rarely wear heels, living in a city I walk everywhere so can't be dealing with sore feet.

I think this style could work if you want something more modern and fashion forward. www.dunelondon.com/novi-quilted-mules-black-0086504510006484/

Alternatively, loafers always works well. I favour the ones with the simple metal hardware bar across the toes, rather than the patent style with the tassels which I think look a little dated now, very 3 years ago.

Ballet flats do not have to be all bad. Avoid the floppy lifeless ones with the sad little bow, well made with a pointed or square toe can feel more fresh. I also like this style giving classic Chanel vibes, M&S had a better version a while back but can't find them now. www.dunelondon.com/hamptons-square-toe-ballet-pumps-camel-0075500620031510/?glCountry=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQjwkZiFBhD9ARIsAGxFX8D0B4UmIUS9_aqVCT9AdT-hJhGpwGX_X382YdxW5GWgtlNZ0AH6D2IaAjsjEALw_wcB

If you are happy to rock dr Martens, a velvet pair or flowery pair will go with everything in winter.

Otherwise vionics are just incredible shoes. Something like this (too high?) Or this. Theres lots of different styles and really well made. They are so supportive DD can actually go without her orthopaedic insoles and still be ok.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/05/2021 10:53

I think it depends on what sort of dresses etc. What is your style? How formal or otherwise is your workplace?

soyabean · 20/05/2021 10:55

Mules and pumps are the worst for plantar fasciitis. You really need shoes with laces, or well fitting boots, so that you can put an orthotic in, if needed, and your feet can ‘relax’ because they aren’t trying to grip the shoe.
I’ve never been a heel wearer. I tend to wear brogues, DMs or trainers. PF lasted about a year but I don’t have any problem with it now.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/05/2021 11:13

I agree with the above. Loafers were one of the worst things for my feet when I was suffering. Just not enough support somehow.

TheVampiresWife · 20/05/2021 11:53

Fit Flop ballet flats. They look like conventional flats but have hidden heel/arch support.

I have rheumatoid arthritis in my feet and PF/hypermobility and I also have about 30 pairs of FFs, without which I'd be unable to walk any distance at all. They're fantastic.

Ballet flats

Platforms and wedges as an alternative to a heel (and v v comfortable they are too)

Boots in case you fancy the chunky footwear/dress look

nickEcave · 20/05/2021 12:08

I wear brogues or ankle boots with opaque tights. I dont wear skirts or dresses longer than knee length as I'm very short and fairly curvy.

goose1964 · 20/05/2021 15:41

I wear these but mine are white at the heel.

I think there are some lovely looking flat shoes on this website. I personally haven't brought any but they look good quality.
I think a pointed ballet flat looks professional.

I suffer with a weak ankle and PF I've bought some wedge sandals from hotter and it's like walking on clouds! Also strive and vionics are good.

EversoDelighted · 01/06/2021 18:09

For PF you need to avoid anything that flaps about so mules are out. Lace-ups are ideal (I wear white trainers for work a lot of the time, or black leather brogues or boots in winter). I can also wear Birkenstocks as long as they are tightly strapped on and not flapping. I avoid ballet flats and loafers like the plague, same for heels, but am tempted to try some of the Vionics ones I must admit. Avoid anything with a completely flat inner and anything where your toes need to grip to keep them on (most ballet flats) and look for some arch support.

The other thing to avoid is anything with squidgy soles so Skechers and Crocs - they might feel good in the short term but they are not good for your feet. I did have some of the ones that @goose1964 has posted but not only were the soles too squidgy I kept hurting my ankle by going off the side of them because they are so stretchy.

Julia001 · 01/06/2021 18:10

FITFLOPS !! They don’t hurt with my plantar fasciitis they are supportive and comfortable and they do all sorts of styles and colours. And, as flat shoes
Are fashionable with everything , they are amazing.

LisaD76 · 01/06/2021 20:48

I suffered plantar fasciitis for 3 years and cured it by wearing heels, mostly platform wedges in summer and courts/heeled boots in winter. I found that having different heel heights every day worked best, and was told by the specialist that shoes that are too flat can cause plantar fasciitis.
