Prom Dress help, where to buy, that's reliable

My daughters prom is in July and I'm having trouble finding something she likes, that doesn't cost the earth

Are all websites safe, I don't want to order from anywhere that will send dresses that look nothing like the photos.

Has anyone ordered from Hebeos, or similar sites?

Ever pretty

MissMiss1 · 13/05/2021 21:22

Have you ordered from Ever Pretty? Are they from China?

Sunshinesandice · 14/05/2021 09:27

Yes I have , my bridesmaids dresses. They were all great!

KM38 · 14/05/2021 09:29

Ebay? Pre-loved rather than the Chinese companies

MrsFionaCharming · 14/05/2021 19:14

Quiz? I’ve had some nice evening dresses from there.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 14/05/2021 19:16

Got two lovely ones from TK maxx

HotelChoc · 14/05/2021 19:19

For instance, I've just searched the designer 'Jovani' - some great bargain new and used.

Little black dress. They have lovely dresses suitable for prom for all budgets.

Runningincircles · 14/05/2021 19:20

I'm not quite in the same situation, because I have a DS and I'm looking for a suit for a super skinny super tall boy.
I've done an order from Next and River Island. I have an account with Next and plan to send all ill fitting suits back to River Island, before I have to pay my credit card.

Next seem to have lots of lovely prom dresses from different brands.

Runningincircles · 14/05/2021 19:21

Sorry! That hasn't linked well. I searched prom dress and lots came up.

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 14/05/2021 19:22

preloved.hirestreetuk.com/

I haven't used them myself but I did note down the above website from ITV this morning on a feature about renting dresses as I have 2 prom dresses here, 1 not managed to be worn, thanks to Covid.

24GinDrinkingOnceTheKidsInBed · 14/05/2021 19:25

Chi chi London do absolutely stunning dresses and are good quality, not like buying from eBay ect. - quiz also do some lovely dresses

clary · 14/05/2021 19:29

Dd got her 6th form prom dress from ASOS, she ordered a couple in different sizes, it was really pretty.

Tall skinny boy is much harder but Next do slim fit and longer length - how tall @runningincircles?

KM38 · 14/05/2021 20:08

@MissMiss1 £200 is a really reasonable budget!! Chi Chi London is exactly what I was going to suggest like @24GinDrinkingOnceTheKidsInBed has 😊 great quality and some beautiful dresses! All around the £80-90 range so you could probably get a whole outfit including shoes and bag etc for less than your £200 budget! They have a whole section that is great for proms or bridesmaids 😊

www.chichiclothing.com/collections/bridesmaid-dresses

ASOS can also be great for occasion dresses.

What kind of style is she looking for? 😊

goose1964 · 14/05/2021 20:21

TKMaxx has quite a few under occasion dresses. I'd lost a link but it only goes to the home page

Runningincircles · 15/05/2021 08:21

@clary He 6'2" and about 26" 28" waist.
The suits from Next have arrived. The long fit jackets and trousers fit. They extra long were, too long.
The River Island suits are due either today or Monday. So he can choose his favourite and I will send the rest back.

We have ended up buying a dress that was far more money than I intended paying.
DD wanted a specific type of dress, so in the end I risked ordering one from China. We trawled through reviews and settled on one place that had lots of good, seemingly genuine reviews with photos. The dress came promptly and it is appalling, it's a green dress, they've roughly stitched it with white thread. All the embroidery is appliqued on with lots of rough edges. It's an odd fit too. The company was Gem Grace, avoid at all costs.
But her friends have ordered some lovely dresses from JJ's house.

Because of our location and not being able to travel, I took her to a local wedding/prom dress place, just with the intention of getting her to look at different styles in the hope that she would settle on a a more easily acquired design and then I would get a second hand one on eBay.
She saw one dress right from the start, it was different to the dress she had planned and she looked so beautiful and confident in it. She's had such an awful year that I gave in and bought it, she was so happy.

NeurologicallySpeaking · 15/05/2021 09:42

You could rent an actual designer gown for that amount.

LynetteScavo · 15/05/2021 10:23

We found one on ASOS- DD is absolutely thrilled with it, and says it's her perfect dress. The price was remarkably low. It does need a bit of tweaking of the strap length, but I explained to DD even dresses in prom shops need tweaking, the only difference is they off that service on house.

We were looking at JJ's House. There are lots of reviews on there to show you what the dresses are like in RL. I think the dresses are made in the UK. I've heard it's difficult to get a refund on a return; they don't let you buy a few dresses to see which one you like best, and they don't do refunds on dresses made to size.

I bought two dresses from ASOS with free delivery and free returns, and the refund on the one we didn't want was fast was fast.

I know several people who have spent £300 + on official prom dresses, which personally I think is silly, but it's not my money Grin

Aww, that's so lovely to read Smile

The smile on her face was worth it, she kept saying, are you sure? Are you really sure? Smile

I know, I know! I'm the type of person who rarely pays more than £20 for clothes and often from eBay (unless it's practical walking gear). I've justified it by saving a lot over lockdowns!

bookmarket · 15/05/2021 12:41

DD's was bought from Zalando 2 years ago. Paid about £70 reduced from appx. £100. Just search for occasion dresses. Their items come fast, in a box and returns are easy.
