47, dry/dehydrated skin. Use a cleaning oil and a basic moisturiser with spf. Starting to look my age. Was looking into acids but im confused. Dont want to use a lot of products ad I know I won't stick with it. So a basic routine outline would be great. Hyaluronic acid for the dry skin? Or a retinol for the ageing? Any advice welcome!

The Medik8 Retinols are great you can start at number 1.

I like an aha or bha to exfoliate like Paula's Choice.

I have dry skin but I use a moisturising serum like the espa one and often a facial oil

HI OP,

I would advise if you are going to use any retinol or acid, that you get a proper SPF of at least 30. A moisturiser with added SPF doesn't always give sufficient coverage. Acids and retinol will make your skin more sensitive to sun damage.

Hyaluronic acid is not an acid in the traditional sense of being an exfoliant, it is simply great for holding moisture on your skin. So can generally be used without worrying that it will harm your skin.

Serums can do many different things, from niacinamide (which helps with blemishes/acne) to peptide serums (which support your skin building collagen). It depends on what you want from your skincare, and what your specific needs are.

Acid exfoliants are great, but be careful as they can be harsh on your skin. also, it does depend on your skin type - if you have oily or combination skin, it is recommended to use Salicylic Acid (also known as BHA).
If you have normal/ dry skin, the AHAs (glycolic acid, or lactic acid) are recommended. AHAs tend to be milder on your skin.

I would only recommend using acids once or twice a week.

As an example:

I use a Vitamin C serum in the morning, followed by moisturiser and then SPF 50.

In the evening I cleanse with a gentle cream cleanser, then use a serum and a retinol product.

For me this works as it only takes a few minutes of my day and isn't complicated.

Also, if you are going to try a retinol product, start slowly by building up usage once or twice a week and go from there.
