What's the difference between highlights and ballade?

As per the post title what's the difference? I've only ever had my hair cut and dried at the hairdressers but I've booked in for highlights as I was going to get some grey put through my brown hair to try and blend in with the actual grey that's coming through but looking at some pintrest images of the kind of thing I want I'm wondering if I should've booked for baylage even though I'm pretty clueless as to what it actually is.
TIA

Do you mean balayage? Have a look on instagram, Pinterest or just google image search for balayage. I prefer it to a full or half head of highlights. Nicer effect and easier to maintain.

have you heard of google? there will be numerous articles explaining the difference far better than randoms on mumsnet who are not experts on the matter. or ask you hairdresser if you trust them not to try and upsell.

@BernardBlackMissesLangCleg thankfully most of the "randoms" I've come across on mumsnet were taught the same as me, that if you haven't got anything nice to say say nothing Grin

I think the main difference is that balayage colour doesn't start at the root, whereas highlights do.
So if you've got grey roots you'll prob need highlights to blend it.

RaisinsRuinEverything · 05/05/2021 22:23

I think with balayage the tint doesn’t go the whole length of the hair but is painted on in patches if you see what I mean. So it’s a more subtle effect because they can use more colours. It usually has beach waves too.
Anyway someone might be along soon to explain it better than me!

Did you mean to sound so rude?

midsomermurderess · 05/05/2021 22:38

That will be a yes, Foo. It always is.

I rarely come over to the Style boards and this was the first thread I opened! I might beat a hasty retreat back to FWR...

Christ there's always one isn't there!

'Do you mean to be so rude' is making its maybe second appearance here. It is a sad, silly little riposte and it makes me sad to see it now turning up in Style and Beauty. Yes, maybe beat a retreat.

Balayage is hand painting the bleach on, so you have more control of where the lighter parts are, creating a more natural look. Highlights are typically all over (full head) or partially (half head) painted on with foils.

Agree about “did you mean to be so rude?” It’s passive aggressive and trying to be clever and witty. Doesn’t work IMO

Maybe you should have posted in AIBU, OP!
