Anyone doing the curly girl method? Picture attached.

Good evening. I've finished reading an older thread from 2009 and have my curly girl supplies making their way to me, ready to accept the challenge to change my frizzy mess of hair.

My plan, to do the method for a few weeks and then book a dry cut in at the hairdressers to get rid of the dead ends.(lock down hair at it's worst)

I’ve bought the Aussie miracle moist shampoo for the final shampoo wash.
Original source conditioner for the co wash and keep in. Plus umberto giannini scrunch jelly and misting pots so I plan to:

Condition and rinse
Condition with a tiny blob and leave it in
Gel when wet 50/50 spritz with a scrunch dry.
Plopping method for 20 minutes and then air dry or diffuse if short of time on a low and cool speed.

I. Can't believe I have tried to tame my hair for over 40 years and failed so badly. Fingers crossed for the curly girl method.

Yes, my fave products are AsIAm cowash, and the Boucleme curl cream and gel - very light weight, doesn't leave hair coated or crispy even if you don't 'scrunch out the crunch'

Thank you 😊

I've just ordered the Boucleme gel on your recommendation!

I've been using Twisted Sista Amazing Dream Gel, but I find that although it gives great curls it's too crunchy. If I scrunch it out I often lose curl definition then.

I hope you like it! I've got pots and tubes of stuff that didn't work for me - a lot of it too heavy I think.

There’s a group on Facebook that you can sell curly hair stuff that doesn’t work for you 😊

I absolutely agree! It's trying to find something that individually works for you (and I'm always a bit of a sucker for a go at something new in the search for lovely hair). I ignore the bits of CG that suggest don't keep changing/using lots of different products. Grin

I'm pretty happy with my co-wash/conditioner. But it's finding some kind of gel/product that gives me curls without looking wet, stiff or crunchy. I'm also a beggar for constantly fluffing/scrunching hair up absent mindedly whilst reading/concentrating which doesn't help, I suspect. I need to keep my hands off it!

@Flibbitygibbit thank you! I don't have Facebook but I have kept it to donate somewhere. Just hate chucking stuff away!

@MadMadMadamMim I've been doing curly girl for about four months and I'm only finally just happy with my hair, and getting a reliable result! I think my first issue was buying up all the Shea Moisture and AsIAm curl creams and gels, and they're just too heavy for me (2C, 3A) even though I've got pretty dry hair. Gave it that product-y coated curl

So pleased to find this thread. I really like my curls from about my ears down but above that it tends to wave and frizz. I did look into CG but it's so confusing and I don't have a small fortune to spend on product that may or may not work.

I also tried just conditioner and my hair ended up looking like I'd bathed in a deep fat frier. Thanks for the Facebook link. Does anyone have any names of cheap CG approved products? I've taken note of the Sainsbury's moisturiser.

This is pretty much the curly girl bible, any info you could ever need is here, for beginners and experts alike.

Thanks, this is really really helpful!

I've just gone to boots to get a Maui conditioner (for co-washing). I'll use some Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo to clarify every couple of weeks. I think this is allowed!

I've got a Shea Moisture leave in conditioner, I'm going to use olive oil and then curl gel. I think this is LOC method friendly! There is so much to it! Someone would make a killing if they made stater packs. Maybe they do!

PS: this is my second attempt, but first time was ages ago and I don't think I had it right the.

I've given up, takes so much time and only looks good for about an hour! So much product that it never feels clean and when you reduce product you get fluff! The groups on Facebook are a bit evangelical and can get a bit much. Some people are 18 months in and are still having awful hair days whereas others find it works in a couple of weeks. If I straight my hair I can get 3-4 days out of it if I CG it I was having to wash everyday and then it still looked awful.

Just do what is best for your hair and don't get too swept away with it!!!

I agree re Facebook groups. They can be really useful, but sometimes a bit much, like those Styled By Susie ones too if anyone remembers them. Or maybe they're still going. Don't know.

I'm willing to give it another go for a few months, as last time I didn't know about LOC or plopping. It's Mumsnet which sent me down that rabbit hole Grin. If it doesn't work, I'll just go back to what I'm doing now.

I really like boots curl cream for my curls. I wash and condition. Comb my hair upside down over the bath with a wide tooth comb then use VO5 volume mousse and some water from the bath to press the curls in. They need to be well hydrated. Then I scrunch with a towel and then apply the curl cream. Predominantly to the ends.

I use a diffuser to partially dry. Then apply clips to the roots where my parting is as my hair can go a bit flat at the root. Then I let it air dry and if it has some crunch later that will just scrunch out with your fingers.

Another thing I like to do if I can’t be bothered to wash it is spray a conditioning spray into it and comb it through. There’s an Argon oil one you can get at B&M that’s dirt cheap. Then I just scrunch with my fingers and it dries really nicely into a different curl structure but still really pretty.

I gave up using all the gels and stuff as my hair would take all day to get to the scrunchy but dry point, and I was fed up of looking like a total witch half the time. Diffusing always muddled up my curl pattern somehow.
I still co-wash or use a SLS free shampoo, and use a silicone free conditioner but am back to blow drying my hair.
It is marginally less frizzy than before, and can go up to 5 days without looking or smelling grim so it works for me.

@Puntastic I use Faith in Nature, any of their conditioners to wash in. You can find them in large Sainsbury’s and Oxfam stores. My hair was a Brillo pad until I stopped using silicones, I’m about 5 years in and haven’t looked back.
