Hiya

I'm 30 and moved house and sorting out all my clothes and wardrobes. I was a complete shopaholic in my early 20s, and now I'm looking at all my clothes that I've taken out of storage, thinking I would never wear that now. Currently due to lockdown I've only been in my loungewear. I want to start dressing more sophisticated and wearing neutral colours. I don't even know how many outfits i should buy as Im thinking this could be a phase. I've always loved bright colours but now I'm older I just don't think I suit them anymore, Any advice. Many thanks x

I really love Rosie Huntington Whiteley, I find her style inspiring.

Well I’m double your age and over the years have just tweaked the things I’ve always liked. I don’t by anything with writing on, don’t wear cropped tops and stayed away from ripped jeans when they were a big thing. I use pattern in accessories like a bag strap, belt or scarf in winter wear simple gold jewellery rather than statement or of the moment jewellery. I’d I want a bright colour I’ll go for it in small areas like a bag or scarf. But I still wear things I like. I’ve never worn bright colours because they’re not me but at 30 (or at any age) there is absolutely no reason not to wear bright things if you like them. The world is full of neutrals and that’s fine if they’re what you like but colour is never a bad thing I don’t think.

What is making you think bright colours don’t suit you any more?

I

For neutrals have you tried
Arket
Banana republic
Cos
Gap
The White Company (expensive but wears really well)
Esprit
Uniqlo

My style has definitely changed, heels are lower & practically is important. I loved RHW style a few yrs ago now not so much as it's not really wearable for anything more than a mirror selfie or a pap stroll.
I like to look good but I need to be able to live in my clothes.

TheChosenTwo · 01/05/2021 12:48

Mine definitely has. I’m far more conservative in the way I dress now!
My dc think my clothes are boring and ‘teacher-ish’ Grin
But I feel comfortable and happy.
I wear leggings and big jumpers at home, dresses and tights for work and jeans when I go out. All usually black/navy/grey. I have a few bright coloured tops but just prefer plain ‘safe blend into the background’ clothes. I probably sound really dull but I’m honestly not!!

Oh Lord I've changed my style and then changed it back again, probably at least twice. But then my body's different, my face is different, my life is different plus I'm fickle and I get bored. To be honest, I think it would be a bit odd to be interested in clothes and never change your style, like someone claiming to like music but still only listening to Tamla Motown or Duran Duran.

So my advice is yes to a regular review and overhaul, just don't do it because you've reached a certain birthday and think you have to, and don't fall for all the guff about shopping in certain places and wearing certain colours. Base it on what the mirror and the camera tell you, and on your lifestyle and also on your own instincts.

My other bit of advice is that the older you get, the less people will notice you anyway which gives you a lot more licence to experiment and have some fun.

Thanks all for your replies.

I think being at home for a year in this pandemic, I've just worn blacks, whites, navy and grey so when I saw all my coloured clothes I thought how am I going to go out wearing bright colours again.

I've always dressed how I've felt, and never followed trends but recently I enjoy the more minimalist outfits.

My style hasn't changed that much - I have just tweaked it a little. It's fajrly classic with a few trend pieces mixed in.
I would say if you can do the storage, keep some of your more colourful items, because I can't tell you the number of times that I have kicked myself for getting rid of something.

I'm most definitely a bright dresser colours make me feel happy & give me a lift. As I get older though the patterns get less and I often go for block colours or a tonal outfit.

I went through a phase after my 3rd child were my stomach gained a paunch that I thought I needed to be more sophisticated now I've moved through that and back to wearing colours loads.

Posting on here regularly has also given me back the love of clothing and trying out new outfits/styles.
