What are the best good quality brands to buy second hand?

I'm in desperate need of some new clothes, but money is tight at the moment and rather than buying Primark / supermarket stuff, I'd like to get some really good quality second hand things.
Someone has mentioned Russell & Bromley boots / shoes to me and I'm thinking of similar type things that would be expenisive new, but might be affordable for me second hand.
I tend to dress pretty casual and am usually in jeans and a jumper type combo. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have a look at Thrift Plus it’s a great website for second hand clothes

My most worn clothes are ebay buys. I wouldn't normally go for second hand shoes but I risked some good condition Dune ankle boots and they are the best boots I have ever bought.

When clothes shopping on Ebay I use the filters to specify what i want. Rather than putting brands in I look for size, fit, colour etc and most importantly fabric. Natural fibres are generally in better condition and nicer to wear. It's much easier to find what you want if you use as many of the filters as you can.

I bought a pair of Russell and Bromley boots from eBay about 10 years ago. Brilliantly comfy and great quality!

I love to buy off vinted and depop. Depop sells quality knitwear like cashmere really cheaply. I pick up lots of next, jaegar and monsoon stuff from vinted

I've had a couple of Jigsaw jumpers from eBay that have held up really well until I accidentally washed one in a hot wash. And Me and Em , got some bargainous nearly new trousers from eBay for about £20. Superb quality.

Agree with pp on looking for fabric - wool, merino, cashmere will be much more long-lasting and comfy (not to mention warmer!) than synthetic.

Clothing: Joseph, whistles, Jaeger, SeaSalt, Toast (be careful with sizing and measurements) Uniqlo (great for cheap cashmere and merino sweaters), COS (pretty solid for sturdy sweaters in good fabrics), Massimo Dutti (the posh older sister shop to Zara, also good for shoes)

Shoes: Russell & Bromley, Dune, Camper, Grenson, Dr Martin’s, Fitflop, don’t forget Clark’s - some of their stuff is very well made!

For knitwear I look out for John Smedley, Brora, Johnston of Elgin and any Scottish cashmere label. They can still be pricey even second hand so I also look for the old M&S St Micheal label which is often charity shop price and indestructible (unless the moths get it). In fact anything with the old 'Pure Wool' kitemark even if I don't know the label.

For other stuff - and this is my taste and it may not be yours - pretty much anything by Margaret Howell, tailoring from Joseph, Toast - especially their trousers (I don't like their dresses).

There are quite a lot of high street labels that I don't rate now but that were good quality 10 or 15+ years ago; Jaeger, Jigsaw, Hobbs, French Connection. In fact pretty much any label from 10 years or more back will be better quality than it is now.

I have a few second hand Jigsaw bits from eBay, which are all excellent. I agree with pp that Jigsae is not what it once was.

I use eBay for the brands I like and the ones I know which size to buy

Joules
Seasalt
Barbour
Whistles
Clarks shoes
Mint velvet

Handy thread. I never do this, but may now.

Great thread! I've just signed up to both Depop and Vinted.

I get a lot from eBay. I have sold to Thrift Plus and also Loopster, but don't know what they're like to buy from. They're great to sell to though.

I've recently bought secondhand from Whistles, Boden and Lagenlook. I tend to only go for brands I recognise. I also only buy cotton, as I put everything (already dry) into the tumble dryer for 45 mins when I get it. This seems to be fine for cotton and surprisingly silk as well. Then I wash it per instructions. I do this to kill anything which might be in the clothes - I am a bit weird about that sort of thing.

This means I don't buy anything made of wool, as it wouldn't survive the tumble. Only cotton, silk and sometimes viscose as well. But loads of people do. This is just my tip if you're a bit squeamish about secondhand.

I have also had some secondhand shoes and got a lot of wear out of them. I tend not to go for secondhand shoes now though, but equally, I don't buy new shoes very often either.
