What is the deal with wrap over dresses?!

Not a humble brag for having huge boobs or anything, I’m a 34C, but no matter what wrapover dresses just don’t fit me!?

No idea what I’m doing wrong. It’s always hugely unflattering around my waist and hips but doesn’t cover my bra once wrapped... what is the deal?!

I need a vest as I've no cleavage with them!
Definitely Goldilocks dresses.

NellyTimes · 27/04/2021 19:31

I wear boob tubes underneath wrap dresses if they are too low, I find vests too bulky and warm around my stomach.

SarahBellam · 27/04/2021 19:37

They work for a lot of people but I am generous of nork and feel very exposed in them. My friend rocks them though.

TheMoth · 27/04/2021 19:42

Is it a proper wrap though? I wore them a lot in the early 2000s and the best one I ever had (from Pilot!) Wrapped round me with a tie that went kind of through and round, so you could adjust for boobs. Mine were bigger and higher then.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/04/2021 20:32

I like a wrap dress but they are very hit and miss on the fit. I've tried a vest but they just bunch up around my waist and ruin how the dress lies. I may look for a pretty slip.

I don’t like the look of vests under, so use a small safety pin to pin the first wrap to the opposite cup of my bra before folding over the other wrap to cover. Never gapes, and my boobs are huge.

I always laugh when people say these are ok for larger people. I just look like I have swallowed a sofa!!!!

TheBullfinch · 30/04/2021 07:46

I think the worst ones are thin clingy jersey. The material needs to be thick or stiff and the fit needs to be loose.

Ariela · 30/04/2021 08:23

You need a decent thickness of fabric so it drapes well (few brands are heavy enough fabric), plus a decent width of fabric - the wrap needs sufficient width to go right round to the side so the leading edge of fabric reaches to the middle of your side, not a mere1/3 the way over on the front, ideally you thread through the inside and back round to tie.
If there's not enough width of fabric to overlap properly you'll always have thigh gape and boob gape.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/04/2021 16:52

No I can't wear them either, I'm pear shaped and a dress big enough for my hips gapes on top.

sonjadog · 30/04/2021 18:07

I am, in theory, exactly the right shape for them, but they really, really don't suit me. I look either like a lumpy cushion tied around the middle or they are like "hello, here are my boobs". I have tried many makes (as I keep reading they should suit me perfectly), but nothing works.

LieLikeALoungeroomLizard · 30/04/2021 18:16

I love them, so flattering

chrisbassett · 02/10/2024 03:01

I am looking at the debate about woman with very large breasts wearing wrap dresses. So far I have not seen one woman in this style looking good. I don't think it is at all flattering. the boobs often spread to the sides and the rest of the garment is not unliike a dome tent, from the bust down. I'm sorry ladies if you love the wrap dress. I remember years ago a very large lady lived in my neighbourhood. She always looked fabulous, and though large you could never see a roll. She knew how to dress for her size. Without knowing it she introduced me to how to dress for body shape and skin colour. I am so grateful for seeing this woman regularly years ago. She is a beautiful woman in what she wears .

Garlicbest · 02/10/2024 03:23

I wear 'em. I have a gigantic back & rib cage (I got your spares, @SingleHandSue!) which pulls the front V open, so I put a little safety pin in it. I didn't get on with wrap dresses until I realised they needed a balcony or plunge bra. Now they disguise my unseemly proportions rather well.

I do sometimes wear one without a bra for knocking around at home - and it starts off well but ain't so great after my boobs have flopped towards the waistline, which has ridden up to create the impression of a bag with two turnips in it, carelessly thrown on top of a full sack of potatoes 😳

Garlicbest · 02/10/2024 03:26

the garment is not unlike a dome tent, from the bust down. See, that's not a bad description of my body shape!

dudsville · 02/10/2024 09:14

I had an amazing wrap dress 20 years ago, but as gorgeous as it was it just moved about too much. I stopped wearing it after a wedding and evening event during which I spent too much time either adjusting the dress or worrying about needing to adjust the dress. It's just not a functional item if clothing for me!
