Shag Haircut; yes or no?

Any hairdressers around, or anyone who has also braved "the shag"?

I have collarbone length hair, which often looks a bit ratty at the ends because I have an addiction to twiddling with my hair, so its always breaking. I usually get a plenty layers put into add some volume. I'm a fan of the "flicked to one side hair swoosh". With a fresh colour and a bit of time, my hair can be fine. Thats the best I aim for - nice.

Buuuut.. I've been looking at the recent images of "shag haircuts" - I'll post an example pic... Questions:

  1. Is this high maintenance?
  2. All the pics I find of it are people who have styled their hair into a wavy texture. I have no inclination for this level of faff everyday - does a shag work if I was to blowdry and straighten my hair or would it look like a mullet?
  3. I dont fancy a fringe either. Is it only gonna look decent if I add a chunky fringe?

Any other advice welcome!

Do you have an elfin face shape like the model?

Having a fringe draws emphasise on your jawline so if you have double chins or are a chinless wonder this type of hairstyle will not suit you.

Following! I have very similar questions, although my hair is boob length.

I'm wondering about keeping it long and smooth with a few long layers or getting a long shag style. No fringe though. I was already growing out a graduated lob &side fringe for a few months before lockdown, so all semblance of any style has now gone from my hair, and I'm not cutting a fringe back in straight after going through all the grow out pain!

Cocksinsocks · 27/04/2021 11:44

If your hair is ratty I would actually go for a blunt cut. Surely making it messier will make it look... messier?

That's basically a long layered Bob. I don't like layers.

But that exact haircut would look great if you are as gorgeous as the model and have time to style it. Hair cuts like that often don't look good on mortals as people don't style it like that. Layers are far too much effort for me personally.

Cocksinsocks · 27/04/2021 11:45

Youd need to blow-dry and tong/curl for that. If you just wear it straight skip the layers. Layers add volume if you add volume to them
If you're flattening it all down not sure what the point is

My hair gets ratty at the ends and i find that layers make that worse, it means it's thinner at the bottom. A blunt cut makes it look so much healthier

redheadwitch · 27/04/2021 11:56

Thanks all, already some good advice.

I have a heart shaped face, relatively strong jaw and cheek bones. Definitely not elfin, though.

The comments that this will only make my ratty ends look worse are probably very valid. I was sort of hoping it would disguise it, making it look intentionally ratty rather than just crap Grin but maybe not!

I need the volume that layers give me, otherwise my hair just...hangs there and I look like the scary girl from The Ring movie.

So, I'm no further forward with knowing what to get lol. I'm going to a new hairdresser in a couple weeks. My old regular stylist is someone I know from school and I went through loyalty more than great skill. I decided the lockdown and resulting distance in communication is a good opportunity to try somewhere else. Perhaps the new stylist will be able to advise Confused

@redheadwitch I'm exactly the same at the min! Except mine is longer Smile

waitingforsun · 27/04/2021 12:14

I have fine straight hair and a slightly short but blunt cut makes it look so much thicker. I had layers similar to the photo for years!

Collarbone length is a good length for me, I do have a fringe but I think a blunt cut looks good without one too.

Have you thought about a Rachel type?

Chatanooga1 · 27/04/2021 12:35

The description of your hair and face sounds similar to Alexa Chung.

Google her Alexa Chung Hair and have a look at her different styles.

That's brilliant, thank you.

I'm having a skive from work, googling away at mid-length hair cuts Smile
