Moisturiser with SPF30 - allergic reactions

Purplewithred · 26/04/2021 12:51

I've recently had allergic reactions to 2 moisturisers with sunscreen in them (one Olay one Nivea). I'm guessing it's the sunscreen causing the problem, and am now working my way through everything I can to find one that I don't react to. FWIW my reactions are pretty noticeable - scarlet, itchy, puffy, sore face and an aftermath of skin like sandpaper for a week or so.

Anyone got any suggestions/experience? Found a hypoallergenic one? I have started getting sun spots and really need to be using sunscreen every day.

La roche posay has a reputation for being good for sensitive skin. They make a variety of SPF, one of them got a good review in The Times this weekend.

I use a Skinceuticals one, and have never had a reaction.

Also Sarah Chapman is about to launch her Skin Insurance one in a no colour shade, so I will be trying that. I really like her products but am very fair and found the lightest tint one was too dark.

My dermatologist said with sunscreen you should just use the cheapest one that you like, provided its at least SPF 30 and has the 5 star UVA and UVB protection. Unfortunately I have not found one I like under about £25 a bottle. It is worth it though. Good luck.

Second La Roche Posay, suncream usually makes me break out but this one doesn’t. Only other thing I would add is that if you’ve had a recent reaction you need to give your skin time to calm down before you try something new. Even if the redness has gone your skin will likely still be hypersensitive & you may react to things you normally wouldn’t.

I have reactions to lots of sunscreens, the one I’m using at the moment is Natio for Men which I got from Amazon. I even use it on my eyelids.

They say moisturisers dont have enough spf to actually protect your face and you should use moisturiser and spf separately.i third Roche posay and be careful not to put it up too close to your eyes, it could be migrating into them. Instead wear good sunglasses.

I use ultra sun spf 50 on my face and body and not had a reaction and I get heat rash with every other sun cream

I put Green People SPF 30 on my face everyday. It’s a mineral sunscreen so has no chemicals in it which might be good for sensitive skin. It takes a bit more rubbing in than regular moisturiser but that’s what makes it a good filter!

I take allergic reactions to the majority of sunscreens I put on my face, with the exception of Jurlique, which is costly, but a little goes a long way.

You don't say how 'recent' your reactions were, but if I have a flare I usually have to be incredibly careful for around 6 weeks or so. That means no new products at all.

Moisturiser with spf is tricky for me. I have best results using them separately and find if I do that I can tolerate a fairly bog standard sunscreen on top of my 'good' moisturiser. There's a Clinique one with built-in spf that works for me, I also really like the Benefit facial spf that goes on top of moisturiser and before make up - it's the only Benefit product I can use, oddly enough!

I use moisturiser (REN) then la Roche posts Anthelios spf 50 on top

I have sensitive skin and this is the best combo for me

justawoman · 27/04/2021 07:32

My GP (who has a special interest in dermatology) recently recommended Heliocare and I’m thinking of getting it. At the moment I use cetaphil moisturiser with spf30 and it seems feels gentle in my sensitive skin and has a nice texture

Thank you so much everyone. I’ve written a list and am trying to get samples of everything possible. Like you say @HoldontoOneMoreDay I’m waiting for a few weeks while my skin settles back down - I’m going to need some more hats I think. And sunglasses.

I have rosacea which is under control at the moment (which I put down to neals yard wild rose balm as night cream) anyway, I use dermalogica dynamic skin recovery as day cream spf50 and feels just like moisturiser

ArnottsUnderpass · 27/04/2021 08:19

Hi, I have a diagnosed allergy to butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane which is the frequently used sunscreen in these moisturisers and many facial sunscreens.

I'd try a mineral one and see how you get on with it. They do take a while to soak in but far less likely to wind up sensitive skin. The Avene one is good. My favourite is a Korean one, called Sunprise Mild Airy Finish by Etude House. It's superb. And only about £12.

It's vile to be reactive. Use aveeno cream whilst your face is cross and take antihistamines.

Thanks - it's such a pain, isn't it? FWIW I don't put anything near my eyes, my sunnies are legendarily huge!
