We have a wedding in Scotland to go to in August and I havnt a clue what to get for my DD to wear.
I don't want to get her a dress that she will only wear once, she's a t shirt and leggings girl!
Any ideas? Thanks

Smart tunic top/blouse with smart trousers would be what I would suggest.

Ilovemaisie · 25/04/2021 19:47

Or even smart tunic with leggings if they are a decent pair.

OnTheHillNotOverIt · 25/04/2021 19:54

How about a jumpsuit? That was the nearest I could get DD to a dress at that age.

Floral?

Plainer but with sparkle?

Er, take her to River Island/Top Shop/her preferred shop and get her to choose something. Or browse on line for a few bits.

Let her know it needs to be smart. A jumpsuit would work.

Let her know that even though she doesn't normally wear a dress it is OK to if she wants to for an occasion dress.....

You maybe surprised.

I think it is great you are not going to force her to wear an outfit she will hate - but maybe also she need to accept that sometimes we dress up a bit....

Vetyveriohohoh · 25/04/2021 19:55

Jumpsuit would be my suggestion, or my DD often loves Zara dresses with dr marten style books to make it less girly

Vetyveriohohoh · 25/04/2021 19:57

I find Scottish weddings tend to be more formal and dressed up than the English ones I’ve attended but that might just be coincidence

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/04/2021 20:00

At 12 surely she's picking out her own clothes.

Loveagoodbook · 25/04/2021 20:11

Thanks everyone, she will wear jumpsuits and does have dresses. Just not very often, we don't really get the chance to dress up that much, so not wanting to spend a fortune on something she will wear only once, I made that mistake last year and now have lots of unworn/to small clothes in her wardrobe.
She will pick out her own clothes, but it wouldn't be on the smart side! She's into the oversized top and cycling shorts/leggings fashion at the moment - which aren't entirely suitable for a wedding! 🙈
So not really wanting

I have asked her what she would like to wear and it's a errr don't know!!
I think a shopping trip is in order once things pick up properly.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/04/2021 20:25

Smart black leggings and a long top would work.

Loveagoodbook · 25/04/2021 20:29

Thanks, I'm going to go shopping with her during the next school holiday, we have zero good shops in our town! Hopefully changing rooms will be open by then. She will probably fit in small women's now aswell, so that should make things easier.
I'm sure we will find something, then it will be finding something for me! Much easier being a man, suit and shirt/tie and all done!

What sort of size is she? Is she an age 12 in most shops? I find adult clothes a bit too grown up in style for my 12 year old.

NellietheNumpty · 25/04/2021 20:38

Actually one of the looks to avoid is looking like s left over bridesmaid. So a jump suit is good. I would say a top and leggings with lovely hair and shoes would work. My 12 year old liked picking up accessories because she could try out ideas without committing.

LucysSkyDiamonds · 25/04/2021 20:41

Dd sounds like she has a similar style so we got her a lovely jumpsuit for a formal occasion last year. She was delighted with herself, suitably fancy but very comfortable.

Loveagoodbook · 25/04/2021 20:43

@Camdenish she's 5ft so quite tall, well not much shorter than me!
She hasn't really had anything from the adult section only sweatshirts/t shirts from New Look.
At least we have until August to get sorted.
Think jumpsuit may be the way to go and yes she will love picking accessories! She does like jewellery!

I would do wide leg trousers with a nice top.

H ad M or Zara would be my choice. Little denim jacket if she gets cold. Converse or similar shoes.

Loveagoodbook · 25/04/2021 21:01

Thanks, I'll add them to my list of shops

Camdenish · 25/04/2021 21:19

Maybe a bit petite for adult ranges but could be worth trying H&M. I like the new Mango teen range to add to the other suggestions.

Loveagoodbook · 25/04/2021 21:30

Ooh ok, I've not heard of that one. Thanks

No you are right, they are more formal. But not for a 12 year old child.

Play suits, jumpsuits, nice top and trousers, dress - all would be fine.

You don’t have to spend much @Loveagoodbook. Look at dresses like this

www.newlook.com/uk/girls/clothing/dresses/girls-pale-blue-ditsy-floral-frill-trim-dress/p/680543049

This if she doesn't do floral
www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0834961001.html

Sparkly and pastel but not babyish
www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0825145002.html

Any of these with a nice pair of flat / low heel sandals and a cardi / light jacket would be perfect. At that age my DD loved to wear things in her hair, like floral head bands, which is pretty for a wedding.

Loveagoodbook · 25/04/2021 21:37

Thanks, I think she will go for a playsuit. She does have a dress she had for our holiday last year, that we never went on, it may just fit her. We will have to have a trying on session, that's a floral chiffon dress from New Look, she was very excited to be wearing it for her birthday meal in Italy and we never got there.

Floral but cool in the “ large floral “ colour way ( link goes to a different photo but you can choose the colours and the styles are different )

Had you though about looking on eBay? SIL gets loads for
My niece on there as it's full of great clothes teens/pre-teens have barely worn but grown out of. She filters it so only certain makes are shown, and has picked up excellent 'labels' that would be too expensive new.

I'm another vote for playsuit/jumpsuit being perfect and likely to be worn afterwards.

Loveagoodbook · 26/04/2021 17:44

Thank you, I've not thought of eBay , good call though.
