Rosacea

Bathazar · 25/04/2021 18:28

I have awful rosacea on my cheeks, nose and forehead. Tiny red veins on my nose and cheeks and I get spots on my cheeks too, when it flares up at certain times of the month.

I use that green makeup to stop the redness during the day but I'd just love to get rid of it and not have to wear foundation.it feels hot and itchy sometimes. I hate it.

Can anyone advise?? Any treatments that actually work? Open to any treatments as it's doing my head in.

Thank you so much ❤

Soolantra is recommended on lots of threads on here. It contains ivermectin which is the active ingredient that deals with demodex. I've got a phone appointment with the GP tomorrow about mine and expect they'll want to actually see me, but I'm going to ask for it.

umberellaonesie · 25/04/2021 18:40

I have rozex ( topical gel) and antibiotics from the GP.
The rozex in particular has improved things greatly

Bathazar · 25/04/2021 18:45

Thanks both.

Will antibiotics clear it forever?

WRT the rosex and soolantra... Are they over the counter or do they need to be prescribed?

Mother... Good luck tomorrow, will you come back and update please?

A course of Lymecycline antibiotics clears mine whenever I have a flare up. Haven’t tried Soolantra but other creams did not work . My GP is happy to give me these pills every few months when Rosacea comes back . Mine is triggered by cold weather and sun exposure so wear hats and gentle sunscreen. But my skin is now clear .

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 25/04/2021 19:36

Soolantra is prescription only. Lots of posters have said you can a Superdrug online prescription and pay for it. It's £38.

Yes, I'll update. I'm hoping whichever doctor rings me knows something about rosacea and the treatments available.

mozerella · 25/04/2021 19:42

Soolantra cured my rosacea after 20 years of trying everything. I still have redness but the pustules and pimples have pretty much disappeared. I use Estee Lauder maximum cover camouflage foundation to cover the redness. Just a little goes a long way, a tube lasts me around 3 months. I use Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser to remove my makeup, and Cetaphil daily facial moisturiser under my foundation (not the daily defence moisturiser, I find this too thick) . I don't use any other products on my face at all.

umberellaonesie · 25/04/2021 19:42

Yeah rozex prescription only.
My rosacea has only appeared in the last couple of years. It has gotten much worse in the last year. Due to masks. I am a midwife so wear a mask alot. The gel has helped enormously and at the end of a shift my skin is much less angry. But the pustules, dryness and flaking is still there. Hence now trying antibiotics.
Unfortunately as long as I have to wear a mask for work I think it will be a case of manage rather than irradiate

YorkiePanda · 25/04/2021 19:53

I have type 2 rosacea and use Azelaic acid serum. Has helped loads. If i do get flare ups now they aren’t as severe as they used to be and usually clearly triggered by something like too much sun, alcohol etc

Bathazar · 26/04/2021 02:29

Thank you everyone. Why didn't I think about mask wearing as being a trigger!? It only just occurred to me. Alcohol is also definitely a trigger.

Pustules... Never heard of that before but yes!! Ugh I hate them.

I think a trip to the doctor is in order then. Thanks for all your advice. And for the makeup and moisturiser tips. Much appreciated ❤️

Watching with interest - I was recently diagnosed with rosacea and prescribed Rozex, but the improvement was very slight after 8 weeks. I now have 2 tubes of Soolantra, I've used it 3 times and my chin and jawline have erupted into a gritty, bumpy, flaky disaster again!! To Soolantra users, is that normal when you first start?

I've not had much luck with anything so far, although I found that "Naturally Resolved" cream from Amazon quite good.

LilyTheMink · 26/04/2021 08:54

No px creams ever worked for me. This stuff has been amazing though

www.amazon.co.uk/Altruist-Anti-Redness-Pigmentation-50ml/dp/B07ZWCP1PL/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&rdc=1&keywords=altruist+green&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1619423515&sr=8-1

Its factor 50, so I use it as a daily sunscreen, but has a tint which totally kills red. And also some ingredients supposed to be anti-inflamatory.

completely amazing for me. I sometimes wear mac prep and prime spray underneath if I don't want too thick a layer - this makes it go on thinner and more smoothy if its not high summer for example.

NoSiree · 26/04/2021 12:24

Good luck with doctor! I definitely would get a course of antibiotics and ask about Soolantra. I haven't tried Soolantra but have needed a few prescriptions for antibiotics and Rosex. Always best not to leave it with rosacea ime, as it doesn't always go away and can get worse.

I have stopped drinking more or less entirely and yes, I'm afraid it really has made a difference and I didn't think it was one of my triggers tbh!

Also, hormones (some hormonal contraception) and stress can make mine worse. I also quite often have a flare up when my hayfever / allergies are also flaring up, so I sometimes wonder whether the two are linked and have seen it mentioned elsewhere online. So could be that. It's that time of year and both things can make your nose itchy and red! Ditto alcohol, which I used to find made my nose really itchy. Maybe I'm allergic to that and it's all part of the same problem 🤔? Anyway, I digress, but good luck with it!

Bathazar · 27/04/2021 08:52

Why is is impossible to get hold of my doctor, very frustrating. Will keep trying.

I'm attempting to come off alcohol, or greatly reducing my intake so hopefully that'll help. Will also order the amazon one as I need the spf anyway.

Thank you all!

Ah that's annoying op! Keep trying.

The alcohol thing is so personal I think. I tried a good few times not to drink and kept going back to it. I've found this time easier and i don't know why. Saying that makes it sound like I had a serious drinking problem, which I honestly don't think I did. I think I was an average drinker. Never drank huge amounts or got drunk etc. Never drank every day of the week. But annoyingly, as I did enjoy WineGin, it seems to have made a big difference to my skin and general wellbeing. Don't think I'll go back to it this time tbh.

NerdyBird · 27/04/2021 12:58

I used Dermatica. It's like a private doctor service so you do pay but they had an introductory offer where you pay postage only for your first prescription. I filled in an online questionnaire and sent some photos. My cream has Ivermectin (which is in Soolantra), Metronidazole and Niacinamide. It has helped. The next month will be more expensive of course, but it was quicker and cheaper than GP and NHS prescription in terms of trying it out to see if it helped.

Bathazar · 27/04/2021 18:54

Thank you both

First night not having a glass of wine in the bath, very alien to me, hope I can keep this up

I promised to update following my doctor's appointment which was over the phone and she then texted me a link which I replied to with some god awful photos. GP says I clearly have rosacea and has prescribed rozex as a starting point. Topical antibiotic gel to be applied to the rosacea twice a day. She did say it would likely be a process or trial and error to see what works for me. So I'll see whether this works. I've bought a prescription pre-payment certificate as that's now three things on prescription.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 30/04/2021 14:55

I've been advised to keep out of strong sunlight and use an oil free sunscreen. Will have to check that's okay with the rozex.

Bathazar · 30/04/2021 16:19

thanks for the update! I've been off the wine since Tues and I have really noticed the difference

I also just bought the Altruist cream from amazon and I've been watching a lot of youtube videos about covering up with makeup etc...got a lot of tips and also can see where I was going wrong with my makeup before. Thank god for MN and YouTube!

Watching with interest, has anyone tried this?

rosalique.co.uk/products/rosalique-3-in-1-anti-redness-miracle-formula?customer_posted=true#feedback-bar--newsletter

FindingMeno · 30/04/2021 16:57

Rozex is helping mine, plus I use a hyaluronic serum, and a niacinamide serum.

Cattermole · 30/04/2021 16:58

I hated Rozex, it literally burned my skin.
I'm a very fair-skinned redhead and it was almost like an alcohol burn. Kerching: infection within a couple of days.

Bloody horrible, I would never, ever put it on again.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 30/04/2021 21:27

My GP has advised me to do a patch test before putting it on my face. I also checked that it was okay to have a drink with as it contains metronidazole! Apparently it is fine. Not that I drink much as it definitely makes my face flare up. Anyway, I'm drinking non alcoholic wine tonight.

Cattermole · 30/04/2021 21:33

Hell yes, MotherofGod.
I used it for something under a week.I'm told sometimes it gets worse before it gets better, but my whole face was swollen up, to the point where I couldn't bear to put my cheek against a pillow in bed. I just wasn't willing to keep going with it. I wouldn't have even minded a spot flare-up. This was like a massive eczema flare. It was really, really frightening.
