Trimming my damaged hair

I know this is a ridiculous idea , but my hair is so damaged and I just don't have time to go to the hairdressers. I have read about cutting your hair at home can tear it and cause split ends , but if it's really dry and damaged is it ok to trim upwards myself , I am struggling to get a brush through it even with intense conditioning, any experts on hair can help please ?

Good pair of scissors is important as bad pair will damage your hair. What kind of style do you have? I've done the MN haircut (layered) and it was fine but mine is very long. Shorter hair styles would be more tricky.

I don’t see how trimming it could cause damage as long as you use hair dressing scissors 🤷‍♀️.
I cut mine- pigtail method to trim to required length, ponytail to chop off the v point and then the unicorn method to soften the ends and add some layers.
Looks good in my opinion - certainly no worse than a visit to the hairdressers anyhoo.
Give it a go, what’s the worst that can happen.

Can you post a pic with your face coloured out?

wagonwheelsforever · 23/04/2021 17:34

DH cut my hair recently and it was fine. We have hairdressing scissors from when I used to cut my dd's hair when she was tiny.

I also used to cut my flat mate's hair with a pair of kitchen scissors when we were students Blush. She gave not one shit about her hair though, so it was fine.

I can't see myself going back to a hairdresser any time soon tbh.

What's the unicorn method please? In fact, could you explain your whole haircut- I want to try !

Ok so first you part your hair into 2 pigtails, slide the bands down to the length you want your hair to be (do it with dry hair not wet). When you are happy that the bands are level cut your hair straight across.
Next create a ponytail at the back of your neck and cut the v off so that the ponytail is straight.
Next make a ponytail on your head like a unicorn horn (I do it on my forehead but you can also do it on top of your head where your crown is). Then trim the ends which will give you a layered effect and soften the ends from the pigtail cut - I normally take an inch to 2 inches off at this point but for your first time I’d take your time and do a little bit at a time and just repeat until you’re happy with it. I’ll try to find the Pinterest links I use and coke back.

Pigtail cut : pin.it/5cZuDC1 - my hair isn’t curly and this method still works for me.

I did it !! I'm so impressed with myself. I cut about 2 inches off and I have nice swishy hair now 😆
Thank you so much!

@UnderneathTheHotSun
👏 well done. Once you’ve done it once it’s super easy. Glad it went well.

wagonwheelsforever · 25/04/2021 10:32

Ok so mine I just trimmed with nail scissors ... and i can get a brush through it now .. but it was a bit wonky so I've just evened it out a bit more and it doesn't look too bad now I've straightened it !! I just felt like I got a bit scissor happy 🙈😂 but all is ok and it will definitely help until I can get to a salon again !
