Facial oil

julietmanchester · 22/04/2021 22:10

I use facial oil and was told recently that it's not good for your face.

Your thoughts? I've only been using it for a year or so, and wanted to hear from people who have been using oil for over 5 years.

Does it help? Is it better than moisturiser? Is it better in combo with serum and moisturiser?

Thanks in advance!

I have only ever used facial oil ( argan , rose hip , prickly pear ) and love it .

Gunpowder · 22/04/2021 22:15

Why isn’t it good for your face? I’ve never heard that. I don’t understand how it could be bad. When I run out of my posh facial oil I use almond or coconut oil.

Milomonster · 22/04/2021 22:17

Argan oil and prickly pear fan here too. I’m 44 and my skin looks great. They aren’t heavy oil and I always put moisturizer on top.

@Mooncats which prickly pear oil do you use? I’ve run out of mine purchased from Morrocco and so looking for another good one.

Been using 3-4 drops of facial oil at the end of my evening skincare routine for about 5 years now. I was skeptical at first, but rarely miss a night now. I apply after a serum/treatment.
I find Rosehip Oil to be my favourite but I’ve tried loads of different types from Almond to Argan and although I vary brands I try to find 100% cold-pressed versions as often as possible. I’d suggest to avoid using too much, and apply at least 30 mins before bedtime so it has a chance to sink in. I also tend to avoid the eye area and if it do stray too close I notice eye puffiness the next morning. Apart from that I’ve not experienced any drawbacks or breakouts.

I've been using a facial oil at night for about 5 years. I always used to get rough, dry patches in winter (colder, dryer climate than U.K.) and they've disappeared completely. I use Aurelia which is expensive, but I love the smell, or one of the Balance Me ones. Thinking about trying a couple of drops in the morning too as my face feels tight even after moisturiser.

@WeThreeKingsofOrientAre

There's also the debate about whether oil before moisturiser or vice versa.

I was told by my friend who is a specialist (dermatologist) that face oil is very bad for you.
But it's just so popular and I've heard the exact opposite. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I use Sunday Riley Luna oil which sinks in beautifully and my skin looks amazing since I've been using it. It lasts forever too. I would never have chosen to buy it but it was in a Beauty Advent Calendar. I've used cheaper oils which were awful for my skin. Clarins oils were ok but still to heavy for my combination skin.

I cleanse, acid, oil, HA, moisturise. Because Luna oil has beneficial ingredients I want to get into my skin and the moisturiser just holds it in place I dont always apply moisturiser I just go by how my skin feels on the day.

Frownette · 23/04/2021 01:59

Did she give you a reason why, OP? I always thought it was good for your skin. Ila spa is gorgeous but very £££.

Luckingfovely · 23/04/2021 02:22

It sounds like a huge sweeping generalisation from your friend, and without any explanation or justification it's pretty meaningless. Many other specialists do recommend it.

I use rose or rosehip usually - but do have a look at Aldi - they have a Rose Oil which is a copy of something much more expensive, which is lovely.

I put it on only at night, after serum and before moisturiser. This is fairly important due to the molecular size - serum won't sink in through oil, and then the moisturiser helps to stabilise it and keep in place to sink in.

Mooncats · 23/04/2021 07:48

@Milomonster I had a Moroccan friend who used to purchase it for me , I also need a recommendation now as were no longer in touch !

bloomsburybaker · 23/04/2021 08:35

I've been given a bottle of this made by an old school friend. It's utterly gorgeous. My face has never been so soft and it smells divine https://www.delphio.co.uk

@julietmanchester

Sorry yes should have clarified the order. My evening routine is:

Cleanse
Acid Tone
Treatment
Treatment/Serum (if I feel like something additional)
Moisturise
Facial Oil

My understanding is the best order for your routine reflects ascending ingredient molecule size. Smaller the molecule size the earlier you should be using it in your routine. So, that’s why toner and treatments/serums should go before moisturiser and oil as treatment solutions tend to have smaller molecule size (with oils having largest molecule size).

julietmanchester · 23/04/2021 13:02

@WeThreeKingsofOrientAre

Thank you for posting the order of skincare application.

Weird thing is my face oil says to put it on first, then if I want 'a more indulgent experience', follow with a moisturiser.

I have read online by many people that oil goes last 'to seal in the products'. Yet, my facial oil clearly states it goes on after serum and before moisturiser if needed.

Then perhaps it is a most refined facial oil with very tiny molecules Hmm

QueenPaw · 23/04/2021 13:26

I use this one instead of moisturiser sometimes, smells gorgeous

Floisme · 23/04/2021 13:35

I don't use branded facial oils but I do use oils from the grocery shelf, e.g. almond or avocado, on my face and have done so for at least 5 years: much cheaper plus no added perfume and shit. My skin used to react to a lot of off-the shelf moisturisers but it's been much better since I switched. I take the view that, if something's been passed as safe to put in my mouth then it should also be safe to put on my face.

Woodenhorse · 23/04/2021 13:37

I use this Jojoba oil one every evening I love it.

SOLINVICTUS · 23/04/2021 13:55

The order depends which type of moisturizer you use, but it's basically down to personal choice. If you're using a moisturizer like Nivea blue, or any thick gloopy one, oil is best before, otherwise after.
The jury is out on what it does, and no oil will reverse ageing, but for extra hydration/plumping they're great.
Rosehip for early ageing/oily
Argan/avocado etc for dry, more mature skin.
Neal's Yard and Liz Earle are both excellent as are Clarins. I also really rate the Body shop oils of life.
