Colour analysis surprise result - anyone else?

100% convinced I was a winter, had colours done to figure out what the best bits of my winter pallette are, turns out I'm a deep/dark/blue autumn. In autumn colours I don't look like myself, it's very odd, my blue eyes turn hazel. Most of my wardrobe is blue! I always thought I looked like family member A, in new colours I look like family member B.

I did it for a bit of a tweak and refresh and it's provoked an existential crisis Grin

I agree that this is a middle-class, middle-aged thing to do and I can just wear what I want, and I'm overinvested and should give my head a wobble Grin

Just took a look at both HoC and CMB. Both seem to incorporate make-up into their colour identification sessions ... I don't wear make-up, never had! Do you think it's worth negotiating for a specialist session, hopefully at a reduced cost?

TheBullfinch · 22/04/2021 20:22
@JackieLavertysWeirdVoice, me too.

I had mine done and although I could see that they suited me, they aren't colours I'd want to wear.
This is me.

Bright fucking Spring, i.e. children's TV presenter.

No thanks, I'll stick to neutrals and you can keep your jaunty scarf.

I SO wanted to be a summer. All cool, subtle, faded, blended tones. Sober and sophisticated.

No. for me it's a Hi Di Hi outfit. Grin

ThePontiacBandit · 22/04/2021 20:30

EggsMom to be honest, the makeup is just up selling/to make the difference more noticeable so you can refuse that big, doubt you’d get a discount though! HOC do makeup as a separate tutorial. I’ve never done mine, I’m not that fussed about makeup and the HOC use Mica which brings me out in a rash!

@ChubbyLittleManInACampervan

I always wonder about people paying £250 for this

There are colours that suit you, and colours that don’t, and you can just see that in the mirror, non?

I always look best I olive/khaki/sludge colours and gold jewellery. I look horrible in any blue/navy (but turquoise ok)

It’s just obvious when you try things on?

Still intrigued by it all Grin

It's obvious for some who are a 'typical' or common type but for other more rare types it's difficult.

Those who're particularly hard to type are the neutrals; those with both green and blue veins for example, like the blue spring and the blue autumn.

I have natural mid blonde hair but grey eyes and fair skin, so look like a summer or a winter but when I tan, everything about me goes golden and warm, not pink and cool. It can be tricky.

@SarahBellam

Getting your colours done is like doing a Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory. As much use as a chocolate teapot. There are so many exceptions and caveats and things are related (have you noticed how much colour palettes overlap?) that it verges on nonsense. You don’t have to pigeon hole yourself - just hold a colour up against your face and see if it works for you. You don’t need to be a ‘type’. Choose what you like and what works for you.
I agree. It sounds slightly unhinged 'oooo I'm a winter, you are a spring' seriously? Can people not figure out what looks good on them to the point that they need a manual to tell them?

No, not everyone can.
Can you not figure out to read all the posts on this thread to get the answers to your question?

Standrewsschool · 22/04/2021 21:35

Many people aren’t aware that colours can enhance their look, so aren’t looking for the better colour. They look at the style over colour.

crispinglovershighkick · 22/04/2021 21:36

honey no one needs it, it's a luxury. There are pages and pages of posts in s&b asking how to look put together/expensive/polished, lots of us would like help, especially when you feel a bit lost.

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 22/04/2021 21:38

Of course it's a luxury - a very self indulgent one. It was a Christmas present from DH. I already have loads of "stuff" and so does he so we bought each other experiences, both of which went down very well.

Like a pp I look completely different in the summer, dark brown hair and pale in winter, lightened hair and tannedish skin (despite spf 50) in the summer..

4PawsGood · 23/04/2021 07:06

Not everyone can tell what suits them, no. I was fond of lilac and lemon but am an autumn so apparently look awful in them.

I had a couple of people tell me I suited teal and olive tops that I had, but I can’t tell myself. I’d only ever once noticed that something affected my face when I put it on, and that was with something cream.

Obviously some people can’t tell. That’s the whole reason it’s needed. Grin

Mumsnut · 23/04/2021 08:12

I’ve been gifted an online colour consultation, but I wonder how useful it will actually be , as opposed to a ‘live’ session

Catabogus · 23/04/2021 08:53

My hair is also dark but with some warmth. Apparently I'm the coolest autumn type, often thought to be winters. I didn't like any autumn colours on me and actively avoided them, I needed to see them all in one place to see how they changed my look. Do you prefer silver or gold?

Very interesting. It sounds as though we’re similar. I had better look up the cool autumn colours. I vastly prefer silver though (been wearing it for 30 years!) and will be a bit sad if it tells me I need to start wearing gold. I totally see how this could lead to an existential crisis!

ThePontiacBandit · 23/04/2021 09:57

Mumsnut my consultant didn’t do colours while the pandemic was on but is now doing 1:1 sessions. She did do styles via Zoom though.

MrsBennetsnerves · 23/04/2021 10:11

I knew that I looked better in cool colours and diagnosed myself as a winter. When I had my colours analysed I was told I was a soft summer and was so disappointed. I had to concede eventually that black really didn't suit me. Pity that I had been wearing so much of it for years.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 24/04/2021 08:33

I imagine a lot of people think the same re black but it suits less people than it doesn't imo. It definitely doesn't suit me, nor does grey. Navy does, also teal.. It's interesting though to hear people have been completely surprised but that they can see it too, with a consultation.

ThePontiacBandit · 24/04/2021 09:13

I always thought black suited me, until I had my consultation. Now when I loom at photos of me in black I realise it isn’t flattering.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/04/2021 09:21

Is it worth having an online consultation though , given colour rendition on screens varies ? Also who to go to ? I have seen Red Leopard on Instagram, but they seem super expensive?

ThePontiacBandit · 24/04/2021 09:37

I wouldn’t do it online personally. My consultant is doing 1:1s now (I assume with masks on). I went with House of colour. If you go on their website they have a list of consultants.

anyoldtime · 24/04/2021 09:45

I wouldn't do an online zoom colour consultation.
I have bought enough clothes online to know that the image on the screen does not always correlate to the colour of the item when I have it in my hand.

FloconDeNeige · 24/04/2021 10:03

I think I’m a cool summer from self-analysis; I have zero warmth in my skin and vary between blue-white in winter and pink-white in summer. I have blue/grey eyes and strawberry blonde hair.

I almost never wear black and always avoid cream, orange, beige, khaki etc., I’m just too cool-toned and the clash is horrible. I mostly stick to pastels and red.

I’d like to have a professional analysis but worry in case they’d recommend the colours I feel don’t suit me at all.

NotMeNoNo · 24/04/2021 11:29

After the colour analysis about half my wardrobe was "wrong" colours. I bought a few tops and scarfs in the new colours to try out and gradually got convinced on the new colour scheme. You get to the point where some of the old clothes (brown/orange for me) don't go with anything any more.
Although I'm a winter I don't go for a very bright look, the consultant sent me a picture of a bright pink blouse/blue skirt combination which made me shudder, but I'd wear either of those colours with my jeans and a black or grey top.

Kettlewell blogs are good for wearable combinations of colours/real clothes.

Uhohmummy · 24/04/2021 17:04

I totally agree with TheBullfinch. Some people are obviously a particular season but for neutral types it is much harder. I am very neutral with hazel eyes and dark blonde (mousy!) hair and was diagnosed as a winter - burnished winter to be exact - but couldn’t see it at the time and now am sure it was wrong. I don’t know if having the analysis done in the depths of winter made a difference, when my skin was deathly with no hint of colour. I think I’m a soft autumn and definitely few more confident /get compliments when wearing dark brown/khaki/coral.
