Doing my own wedding make up

MissMogwai · 19/04/2021 07:32

I'm getting married soon and thanks to Covid etc, I'm struggling to find a make up artist for the day. So I will be doing my own make up, god help me.

I'm ok with the base/blush etc, but I'd really appreciate if anyone can recommend an easy eye make up tutorial? I've been watching Lisa Eldridge videos and practising but I could do with more help!

I only ever wear mascara and eyeliner but I want to look very put together and glamorous for once

I'm also looking for a long lasting, non-drying lipstick if anyone can recommend those too.

Thanks!

Jamie French has tutorials on FB and has a lovely wedding one
She is also very amusing to watch

The best lipstick I've found is l'oreal les chocolats/ macarons, honestly doesn't budge and very hydrating whilst on. I've had many nights out wearing it with LOTS of eating, drinking and kissing Blush and it stays intact throughout, I top up once if that.

I did my own wedding make up too OP.

I can't think of anyone specific on YouTube but if you search "wedding make up tutorial" on there you could watch a few and find one that you like and can follow.

I like Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Medium. Pillow Talk could be a good colour if you are more of a light / medium complexion. Not sure how long lasting it is as I don't find any lipsticks are that long lasting on me.

For my wedding I used a Laura Mercier lipstick and lipliner.

I also recommend a good primer and powder if you haven't got one. Again Laura Mercier is good for primer and powder. I also like Benefit Porefessional.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/04/2021 08:37

I agree about a good primer. Wait at least a few minutes after putting your moisturiser on to use it.

I did my own make up. I’ve been doing it for decades and wanted to look like myself.

I did a friend’s for her wedding too. You’ll be great. Practise and see how it fairs over a long day.

I use max factor paint on lip colour for long lasting

I think it might help not to have huge expectations as self-make up when you’re stressed and rushing over a wedding is never going to be comparable to using a makeup artist.

Is there anyone you have invited (a bridesmaid or relative perhaps) who could be reeled in and learn how to do it? If so you could book a virtual mac bridal make up session for the both of you. Another option is to reach out to a local beautician as many have reopened - many, particularly those who rely on the Indian wedding market, are still doing bridal makeup in-salon.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/04/2021 08:59

Have someone take photos of you in the make up after you practice and vides so you can see how it looks.

Hannah Martin has good wedding make up tutorials as well.

The lipsticks I can recommend are Bobbi Brown Crushed and Chanel liquid powder. Bot stay on and leave a stain after wearing away.

MissMogwai · 19/04/2021 08:59

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your comments.

I don't expect to look as expertly made up as I would if I had a make up artist, but I want to look like a much more sparkly, glowy version of myself.

I've treated myself to new make up, I mostly use No 7 and Clinique anyway, and have all the primers and other gubbins.

I will look into all the recommendations and keep practicing!

I did my own. It would have worked better if I hadn’t been too busy sitting around chatting to get on with it- I ended up spending about as long on it as I do for a normal day. And any ideas about touching it up later went out the window as well, I just forgot.

Yes, this has happened to everyone I know who did their own wedding make up. Two of my friends got so caught up in other things they even forgot to put any make up on at all lol.

I really recommend going to a make-up shop and getting them to do a tutorial with you.

I'm doing my own wedding make up too. I went to MAC shop and they do a bridal tutorial thing, where you can go along for an hour and they basically teach you how to get the look you want. You have to pay for it but then you get to spend the money on products, so really it's free.

I don't work for MAC by the way - I'm sure you can get similar at most make up stores - I just thought it was a really good service and so much better than YouTube tutorials which can be a bit "one size fits all".
