I really like those baggy linen dungarees but am I too old??

I've seen some in a new independent shop today where I live. They're in a range of colours. I don't think the linen is especially good quality but they look so comfortable. I'm a youngish looking 57 year old. Most people think I'm in my forties which is great and I am mindful not to let this go to my head! I wear smart casual most of the time including for work but they wouldn't be a work item. I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard. My friend looked with me and said they wouldn't be for her but she could see that they would suit me and why I'd like them. I'd wear them with a t shirt and leather trainers. I'm a keen dressmaker and wonder if I should make some in a quality linen or light denim. I also don't want to look like an overgrown toddler Grin. Is it a risky look for a women of my years whether I look younger or not really?

Everyone looks like an overgrown toddler in dungarees, so I wouldn't let that bother you.

For me, it's nothing to do with age - it's norkage. They wouldn't suit me because I'm so booby so I avoid them, nothing to do with my age. Which is 54.

IdblowJonSnow · 18/04/2021 23:17

Ffs, just go for it! I like dungarees personally and disagree with the 'too old' sentiment about pretty much everything re fashion.

thebabessavedme · 19/04/2021 07:53

Just get them, age is nothing, if they are your style and you like them then do what you like, Im your age and twice this weekend I have been told I look 'cool' by younger women because I had on what I liked and not what society would deem age appropriate Grin Not flesh on show though, I dont want to scare the horses Grin

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 19/04/2021 07:56

Nooooooooooooooooo not only are dungarees horrendous in an Andy Pandy type way, nobody should wear them over 4, but also linen so you have that just got out of bed after spending the weekend there in my dungarees look.
I can't imagine anything more awful.

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/04/2021 07:56

Get them. No you are not too old!

Frazzle76 · 19/04/2021 08:02

If you want to make them one of the sewing magazines had a free pattern for them last summer. (Although to download now presumably you'd have to sign in if you don't have friends who collect patterns).
And they work better in heavy cotton (twill) than linen.
Or have a look at Lucy and yak and run and fly.

Why oh why are we still worrying about if we're too old for something?
It's not your age, it's whether you can carry it off, whether you're 70 wearing a figure hugging dress, or 80 wearing harem pants.
Go for it op. Also linen is the classic twist that will 'elevate' the look from pre-school practicality to style statement.
And, of course linen crumples. In my opinion that's part of the beauty of it.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/04/2021 08:16

No you are not too old.
However thin linen can look very saggy once you have been sitting in dungarees, as they stretch along the back . Making some in a sturdier twill or a heavy linen or a 50/50 blend of the two would be better.

eaglejulesk · 19/04/2021 08:20

Of course you are not too old! I also agree with a pp, linen is supposed to look crumpled, that's why we like it. I'm a bit older than you, and I dress to please myself and couldn't care less what others think, so go for it. The only opinion which matters is your own.

Divebar2021 · 19/04/2021 08:23

It isn’t really necessary to précis the question with “ everyone thinks I look younger”. You’re allowed to look your age even if you don’t want to. I would buy some dungarees and try them on and see how you feel but I would buy them in a nicer quality fabric.

LawnFever · 19/04/2021 08:24

No such thing as too old for clothes imo, if you like them do it! Smile

teawamutu · 19/04/2021 09:56

If you're a dressmaker, look at the Tilly and the Buttons Make it Simple book - there's a pattern for wide legged dungarees that are lovely in linen.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 19/04/2021 10:21

If the linen isn't good quality, I'd be more worried about that than whether you should wear dungarees or not. There's nothing worse than linen that sags and creases after 5 minutes wear, it just looks awful.

JoyOrbison · 19/04/2021 10:23

It's nothing to do with age, Go for it!

My problem, as mentioned by a prev poster, is boobs! I'm large of norks so dungarees would be stuck out a foot in front of me 😂

ILoveShula · 19/04/2021 11:04

Just buy them. You won't save money by making them as you'll need about 3.5 m of fabric, if the ones I had made are anything to go by - it was patterned fabric though..

The dressmaker made a great job. Needless to say I look like a wrinkly oversized toddler in them Grin

OneMillionSteps · 19/04/2021 11:20

It’s nice to have some fun items in your wardrobe, give them a go I say

Myfirstcarwasamini · 19/04/2021 15:04

Thanks all for your replies and (mostly) encouragement. I think the consensus is quality fabric which can be said as a muat for everything really. So armed with these lovely recommendations I'm going to research some patterns and make them myself. It doesn't make them cheaper but does mean the fabric can be something I really like and which hopefully won't sag! Cheers GrinFlowers

You can shop around for fabric, should you choose.

I love my dungarees, and I had already bought the fabric very cheaply. I had more than one pair made and the dressmaker loved one fabric and was quite negative about another. They are cotton not linen.
