What I asked for vs. What I got

I asked for pic 1 and left with pic 2. ..

It's so different! I had to leave in a hurry (& it wasn't cut in front of a mirror) so I didn't get to appreciate just how bad it was.

My hairdresser is lovely (but not brilliant) and has really struggled over lockdown so I've already accepted I'm not going back to her to fix it.

I just feel so mumsy and frumpy.

What shall I do?

  • leave it and style as best as I can? The colour isn't bad, it's just not right.
  • try to dye it myself at home- very risky!
  • throw money at it (which I don't really have, and it will be ages for an appointment in a salon)

I do know it's just hair. But I was really looking forward to having it done nicely.

The cut isn't the same at all! The model's has no short layers at all. The styling on ops isn't great and her hair is obviously much thicker, so I don't know if the style would have worked well anyway, but the hairdresser should have been able to advise.

I echo what a pp said, the model's looks modern due to the styling, but also the fact that it isn't very layered: the effect is of a single striking shape. The layers in OP's make it look (and probably move) like an old fashioned bob

babbaloushka · 17/04/2021 16:47

Could you use a straighterner to curl the back of your inward a little? That might make it look more like the models, hers is curled at the front too.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/04/2021 16:50

@Eyevorbig0ne

They're totally different. The first is bold, funky and exciting The second one is muted and safe
Yep. OP I would go somewhere else and ask them if they can give you the colour you want. If it's not possible for your hair, fair enough, but it seems like your hairdresser wasn't honest with you.

Yes it really is an old fashioned bob.

I'm going to have to get creative with the GHDs!

@RacheyCat

It's not at all the same cut. The OP has asked for a very modern style with a very modern cutting technique and she has been given a basic haircut. Expecting to get that level of lift in one visit was unrealistic, so I'd accept the colour, but I would be peeved about the cut. It's not that there's something wrong with the hair, it's just wrong.

Bad luck, OP. A lot of hairdressers can't cut like that. I'd suggest finding a stylist who posts their work on insta so you know they can do it.

Thank you, you're absolutely right. I think I'll grow it out and save for a decent cut. The colour will have to wait.

Sorry I don’t even think that’s a particularly good haircut.
It’s is also nothing like what you asked for.

Hairdressers need to manage expectations.
By the way you obviously have lovely thick healthy hair, but no I would be disappointed and rightly so I think

Cindy87 · 17/04/2021 17:02

It just needs to grow out, she's done the layers too short. It'll look lovely a bit longer. The light blonde colour is lovely but would be high maintenance - would cost a lot to upkeep. If you're able to maintain it, I would go to a different salon to get it done rather than DIY. X

warmandtoasty2day · 17/04/2021 17:17

the blonde looks like she's just dragged herself of bed, don't like it so scruffy. much prefer the brunette. BUT it's how YOU feel about it that matters.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 17/04/2021 17:30

Your hair looks lovely and pretty much exactly what I’d like to have. Unfortunately I have crappy, ultra-fine hair that will never look that nice!

Taking aspirational photos into hairdressers and coming out looking nothing like them is pretty much my raison d’être!

Chloemol · 17/04/2021 17:35

Looks nice to me

Tistheseason17 · 17/04/2021 17:41

Your hair is much thicker than model's. Yours would not look the same with same cut due to weight. Also, model's needs to be styled every day - she won't wake like that! Agree colour totally different but without seeing your face, I'm not sure which better for you - I do like yours and much easier to maintain 😊

You could tong/curl loose waves into yours to make it look more modern- not a bad cut - just not what you wanted.

ElderMillennial · 17/04/2021 18:00

You have different hair types OP. Did your hairdresser explain that it would look different on you as a result? Your hair seems much thicker and coarser than the models plus the colour can affect how it looks overall.

I agree your layers look shorter but I still think yours would have looked different.

Rodders92 · 17/04/2021 18:48

I think it would look make a huge difference with the ends texturised to thin out the weight at the bottom should be fairly easy to sort as your hair looks too thick for such a blunt cut .

jannyapple · 17/04/2021 18:53

I like your hair ! It looks healthy and natural - the blunt cut is very modern and the upkeep will be no where near as expensive or damaging as the model picture

sweatpantsofdefeat · 17/04/2021 19:12

It looks like you've pinned the front of your hair back OP? I think I can see the pins. That's making it look like you have some very short layers at the crown.

To get the look in the first picture you have to leave the front layers hanging long which I get can be quite impractical. You also have to have quite fine, straight hair and then style it with tongs or straighteners.

Ha! That reminds me of when I took a pic of a short hair cut that happened to be attached to Halle Berry. The count stylist said "you know you're not going to look like her don't you?" Cheers mate! Grin
bellabride · 19/04/2021 10:14

It looks okay, but if you feel "safe" and mumsy and left the salon not feeling good about your hair, it's time to look for a new stylist ( no matter how lovely the other one is).

ILoveShula · 19/04/2021 11:15

Pic 2 hair is much nicer than Pic 1. The hair looks thick and healthy and the colour is great.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 19/04/2021 11:17

@Iamblossom

I have looked several times and apart from the colour the cut looks pretty similar to me?

Am I missing something here?

Glasses presumably!
TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 19/04/2021 11:28

It's like asking for a cocktail and getting a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

So disappointing

If it was me I'd talk to a few salons, explain the problem and ask if they could achieve p1 with your hair (at all, ever) and see what they say. If they think they could, ask them how and what to do with yours currently to head in that direction.

Asking them how much it'll cost to get there & how much maintenance if the style & colour will cost might help you decide what you want to do.

In all honestly, your cut isn't great & the look is very mumsy BUT at least you don't look like shaggy as most people do!! 🤣

StellaLeonte · 19/04/2021 11:47

The cut is lovely - was your hair dark to begin with? My understanding Is that you can’t go from brown to such a light blonde in one go, you need to do it gradually xxx

RebeccaCloud9 · 19/04/2021 11:56

Do not try and bleach it to that colour by yourself! And I say that as someone who regularly and happily uses box dyes. Get some curls in with your GHDs and you'll be able to style it similarly but if you want to go for that colour, go to another hairdresser! It may need doing in stages too - but a good hairdresser should talk you through the process before you start.

I like your natural highlights that they gave you though.

PrimeraVez · 19/04/2021 12:07

The model's picture has been very heavily styled - a cut alone wouldn't achieve that. That's a lot of time and effort faffing with curling irons and products. Do you have time for that every day?

The colour is a completely separate issue - your colour is lovely, just nothing like the first one.

Coffeepot72 · 19/04/2021 12:12

You asked for blonde hair, and left the salon with brown hair. Something not right there.

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/04/2021 16:14

I’m no expert but I agree you have very different hair type, and your hair in your pic is pinned up.

I think it’s always best to go with what suits your hair. Rather than try and achieve the impossible. You can never expect the results to leave you looking like the photo, it’s a guide, but your hair dresser should explain that
