Tips from daily facial sunscreen wearers please!

I think I should start wearing high factor sunscreen on my face, so could I get some advice from people who do this please, especially...

Do I just use normal body suncream on my face or do I need a special face one?
Do I put it on then put on makeup? If I do this, doesn't the makeup slide off?
I use a facial tanner already, so at what stage in the routine should I use this?
So many questions! (I'm aware I'm probably overthinking this!)

Up to you which one you use but facial ones will look better and even then some are a lot better than others. I use murad city skin spf 50 and love it. Moisturise first, wait a bit, then apply.

sharalanda · 13/04/2021 16:09

☝🏻 this one is not greasy so makeup won't slide off. Not sure about facial tanner but guessing that would go after moisturiser & before sunscreen?!

gretagreengrapes · 13/04/2021 16:15

I always use cetaphil spf as it doesn't cause spots and is very reasonably priced. I let it sink in for 5 minutes and my regular makeup sits fine on top of it all day if I'm wearing it. I find body suncream doesn't sink in well and causes breakouts.

I love this stuff, have been using un block for years and have stuck with this one for the past 5 years after always changing as I couldn't find a good furmular:

Another vote for Heliocare. Fabulous!

CarpeVitam · 13/04/2021 16:23

Although I get the lightly tinted version.

One specifically for face is nice just so I actually want to put it on! Sunscreen got in my eyes and really stings too. From what I’ve read you don’t need anything too expensive, I’ve been using Revolution spf 30 moisturiser, RRP £10.

I stock up when ASOS do a 20% off everything offer.

Or did you mean even higher spf? Higher than 30 I only found quite pricey products that were nice to apply.

This was my absolute favourite, it does have a white cast cos of its method of sun protection, but lasted and smelled amazing, and worked as a Bb cream www.spacenk.com/uk/skincare/moisturisers/day-moisturiser/exhale-daily-hydrating-nectar-spf30-MUK200018886.html

I use this one, I moisturise first and then sun cream.

  1. I use dedicated facial sunscreen (Kiehl’s). I think body sunscreen tends to be heavier/thicker so clogs up your pores a bit and feels greasy. Whereas facial sunscreen is designed to be used under makeup so should be lighter. Imo body sunscreen is more heavily scented too, which could cause issues on your face if you use other skincare like retinol, chemical exfoliants etc as these can sensitise your facial skin
  1. Yes you can, no problems with the right
sunscreen
  1. What do you mean by facial tanner? Is it something that actually tans your skin, or is it just a colour that can be immediately rinsed off like foundation? If the latter, apply it after sunscreen
Seethroughcurtains · 13/04/2021 16:49

Can anyone recommend a tinted face spf for darker skin? I’m olive skinned and sometimes find the tinted ones that I’ve tried too pale.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/04/2021 16:52

Big fan of Etude House Sunprise: Korean facial sunscreen. The Asian sunscreens are ahead of ours, they're big on them. This one I use is mineral but leaves no white cast. It's amazing, and reasonable price too.

soberfabulous · 13/04/2021 16:53

I use aveeno factor 70. It's great. Not greasy and hard enough slippage to get foundation on nicely.

I also use a neutrogena 100 which my dermatologist says has just done really well in blind tests.

I love them both.

Nars tinted moisturiser is expensive but brilliant. There’s a place on eBay you can buy a small sample to try. It’s enough for about 10 wears I’d say.

I use Eucerine spf 50 every 2 hours as directed. It leaves my skin matt but I only apply eye make up. After 2 hours my skin is not protected so I re-apply. It's important to have high UVA filter and you can watch tutorials on YouTube . I follow Dr Sam Bunting she has great advice.

Inmypjsagain · 13/04/2021 19:44

I use a special face one as I find others too greasy, my favourites are Clinique city block (quite matte) and ultrasun face (this is a once a day application).

I apply my make up on top but need to let the suncream sink in- I do find that make up doesn’t sit very well on top of suncream so I need to use more powder. I wouldn’t say it slides off it’s just different and I’ve had to adjust the foundations I wear.

What facial tanner do you use? I would just switch to that as part of my night time routine instead, if it works with your other skincare?

sunseeker19 · 14/04/2021 12:53

Really great tips, thanks everyone!

So I'm thinking my morning routine should be:
cleanse
apply special facial sunscreen (noted not to just use body one!)
make up
Then evening:
cleanse
apply facial tanner 2 x per week

Sound ok...?

I’ve tried lots over the years and my favourites are the Murad one a PP mentioned, Lagom and Biore watery essence. All good, non-irritating ones that work under makeup and don’t leave a white cast. If you wear contact lens like me then be careful to wash your hands before putting them in as sunscreen stings and the tears will ruin any makeup!

CopperLily · 15/04/2021 06:50

Does the sunscreen act as a primer too? I moisturise then use primer so I'm not sure when to apply the sunscreen.

Dizzywizz · 22/04/2021 19:41

What confuses me is don’t you need to reapply sun cream every 2 hours? In which case then wouldn’t you need to redo all your make up?!

Inmypjsagain · 22/04/2021 20:00

@Dizzywizz yes you should. You can get once a day sunscreens like ultrasun (other brands do them too, soltan has a nice one). I have spray SPF50 that I top up on top of my make up, not sure how effective it is though I figure better nothing.

Weemovitchski · 22/04/2021 20:20

SunSense is Australian which has the most stringent criteria for a suncare product worldwide. I am able to get this on prescription as I have vitiligo. I usually wear a hat if the sun is fierce.

Altruist factor 30, I sourced via Amazon. Arrived this morning, huge 1 litre with hygiene pump and great everyday protection with really good moisturiser high UVA and UVB (5 *)! I get a lot of compliments on my skin, have worn at least factor 30 every day as a base moisturiser since I was 14 hrs old (I'm 42!). I've favoured this brand for last three years and also buy factor 50 for kids/ beach and holidays in the sun! This is perfect for every day UK and good value at £17.55 for everyday use this will last over six months for me and the kids!

Cestlavies · 23/04/2021 03:19

Nivea face sun is really good. They have ones for anti shine, sensitive and anti aging. I recently bought altruist sunscreen and it was way too greasy on my face

rhianfitz · 23/04/2021 09:18

The Korean ones are worth trying and great value too

anon666 · 25/04/2021 20:56

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the effect it can have on your eyes. I find most of them, even facial suncream, eventually irritate my eyes. However, the heliocare one others have mentioned is the best I've found. It soaks in and then stays there.
