Sustainable British made brands

Since having my son and being stuck in lockdown, it's really made me think about my carbon footprint and how I spend my money. I've decided that I'm going to try and stop with disposable fashion and spend a bit more on well made clothes that will last longer and to buy less.

I haven't got thousands to spend on clothes, I'm looking at around £60 -£70 for something like a Jersey or cotton jumpsuit. I'm happy with either British made or sustainable though ideally both but as long as it was one of those, I would be happy.

Any suggestions of brands? I've seen few things I like at Hush but wanted to look at other options. I'm on maternity leave at the minute so money is limited and I want to look around before purchasing.

Thank you in advance

I have made a decision to try and purchase only second hand clothes, through Ebay, vintage websites and charity shops. Even expensive brands use sweatshop labour - so many items made in places with dubious human rights and labour laws. If the garment has already been made then better to give it a second lease of life, for enviromental and ethical reasons.

Have a look at community clothing - sustainable and made in the uk

Same as HeadNorth I’m trying not to buy anything from shops at all this year. eBay is bloody brilliant for this. My tip is not to experiment too much with brands you haven’t worn before for fit reasons

Happyhome21 · 13/04/2021 19:06

Baujken is ethical and sustainable and currently do a fantastic key worker discount
Will's Vegan shoes - carbon neutral

CushionsandCandles · 13/04/2021 19:35

Maybe try Jumping Ships or Ooh Betty Clothing www.oohbetty.co.uk/

Fab sustainable fashion shop:

https://69bboutique.com

I like that they make other efforts at sustainability / being responsible too (see their manifesto)

I love this shop. Sustainable and black owned. Some of their things are pricey but they have some really good value bits too.

There's one I can't remember the name of...um...um

ILoveShula · 13/04/2021 21:12

Found this

BigWolfLittleWolf · 13/04/2021 21:13

I wouldn’t bother.
I’ve wasted so much money on ‘posh’ British brands over the years only to have it fall apart.
I use eBay almost exclusively now

crispinglovershighkick · 13/04/2021 21:16

I don't think Hush is a sustainable brand op, or made in the UK. Have a look here: goodonyou.eco/most-ethical-and-sustainable-clothing-brands-from-uk/

ILoveShula · 13/04/2021 21:20

After a few more searches, i found it. I have no affiliation with the company, or any of the others I listed.

It is STALF
and I found this first.

theorangesisters · 13/04/2021 21:22

I try and minimise my footprint by buying as much secondhand as possible - Depop, Ebay, Vinted, FB marketplace are great for this, especially if you know your size in particular brands. Lots of nearly new/excellent condition clothes, shoes and accessories.

Re-fashion and Thrift+ are excellent online charity shops.

ILoveShula · 13/04/2021 21:23

Oh so many lovely clothes...

shinynewapple21 · 13/04/2021 21:32

Have a look at Nancy Dee if you want British made and sustainable .

Other sustainable brands are Thought and People Tree, I think both have jumpsuits for the price you suggest .

Celtic & Co have a few British made things but probably not the kind of clothing you are looking for .

DianaT1969 · 13/04/2021 21:33

Would you consider taking up dressmaking?

DianaT1969 · 13/04/2021 21:36

With dressmaking you control the quality and where the fabric is sourced from.

crispinglovershighkick · 13/04/2021 22:08

Sorry op, that was the wrong link. This is quite a good site for products made in the UK: makeitbritish.co.uk/

Celtic and Co source most of their materials from the UK and use British sheepskins. They have a page of goods made in the UK: www.celticandco.com/made-in-great-britain-products

Solovair shoes are made in England: uk.nps-solovair.com/

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 13/04/2021 22:16

I have bought many items from ebay over the years. There are many people selling items at the moment too. Unfortunately that also means a bit of disappointment at items not quite as described. It's fine if it's new.

mrstea301 · 13/04/2021 22:53

Another good approach is hiring clothes on a subscription basis - this is what this company does:

siodauk.com/

Thidwick · 14/04/2021 08:29

You’re best off buying second hand if you want sustainable. Second to that, check out the Good On You directory for eco credentials. There’s a few surprises there - for example Seasalt is rated the same as H&M, and M&S seems to be one on the most sustainable high street brands.
