Automatic hair curlers - too good to be true?

Hi, I'm totally inept with any hair styling tools, apart from a hairdryer and carmen rollers! I have thrown money in the past at all the new stuff that comes out, and I can never get them to work for me.

Think hair curling brush, curling wand, straighteners etc. But I've recently seen this product called an automatic hair curler. You put a piece of hair in the cutaway bit of the device and press a button. The hair is automatically fed in and a few seconds later you click the button again to release it, and voila - it comes out curled.

Of course it looks lovely and seamless on the youtube videos and I'm wondering how it will work in reality with Ms Cackhanded here.

Please spill - have you got one of these and as they as good as it says on the tin?

I've seen those. They work on the same mechanism as the babyliss curl secret which I have so I would say they work.

I bought one on eBay. It was brilliant. I am totally useless at wrapping hair around tongs or straighteners. Perfect curls. I was shocked. I have long extensions so not easy to curl. However it stopped charging after about three weeks. Bought a second one off eBay different seller. Didn’t heat up at all. I decided to invest in a more expensive one from a different site abd bought a glamoriser. It is amazing. My hair looks better than when it’s done at a salon and the curls last a good few days just gradually dropping to a nice wave. So yes worth it but don’t buy cheap knock offs

Hi Parsnip, what make is your glamoriser?

I have the Nobebird curler - it’s brilliant. I have thick curly hair but use it to control the curls. It’s easy to use and I’ve had lots of compliments.

Grav3yardgirl on YouTube gives good honest review on lots of hair curling devices. She's a bit bonkers but you get a pretty good idea of whether something is all hype! She's got a video for the Curl Secret automatic curler, might be worth a watch

I have one (cost about £40 on amazon, very good reviews) and I used it a few times then gave up on it. Its just too much of a faff. I can curl my hair with a wand though and I just find that so much quicker and easier than the automatic curler.

It does do the job and the curls last but you can only put small sections in the curler so it gives quite tight curls rather than waves plus it curls all the way to the end of the section which is a look I don't really like. If the section is too big then it will beep and not work. And you have to figure out which way you want it to curl and change the setting every time you switch sides of your head. You have to hold it in place so it's no less strain on your arms than a wand. It is a lot harder to burn yourself on than most other hair tools though so that is a bonus, it's pretty safe.

I can see how it might be easier if you can't get the hang of using a wand but personally I wouldn't recommend them, or at least I wouldn't recommend the one I've got. I'd advise to persevere with a wand instead. With a wand you have much more control over the curls (can start/finish them where you want and decide on how thick you want each section to be and how long you apply heat so control how tight/loose the curls are) and its much quicker.
