Young and spotty!

DD is young (10) and struggling with spots. Her forehead is the worst. She's not actually bothered about the look but it's not nice and today is raised and sore.

Any good calming, cooling, zit-removing stuff?

I am pushing 40 and have struggled with my skin my whole life, additionally have noticed my daughter who is only 8 is oily and gets black heads on nose and chin.

It has taken me this long to get to grips with my skin which sounds like your daughters.

My greatest discovery is niacinamide?spelling and salycilic acid serums, either sold from the ordinary range or the boots ingredients range. I have found this daily after a no7 gentle foaming face wash and a deep pore clay mask twice per week almost completely resolved my skin problems.
For my daughter we wash with simple daily and use a gentle scrub twice per week with a serum after and her skin has stayed clear.
Hope that helps!

Thanks, it does. I'm worried about doing more and ending up with her having spots AND dry, irritated skin.

I had a post up here few weeks ago about my own spotty and oily skin. Someone recommended neutrogena clear and defend face wash and moisturiser. I have started to use it and definitely see an improvement. Maybe worth a try.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/04/2021 20:49

Neutrogenia is probably fine for 10 yo skin I'm assuming.

My teens spots (and mine too, I have combination skin with an oily chin) have responded well to:
Cerave cleanser
The Ordinary Niacinamide serum, this is brilliant and only a fiver
Bioderma Sebium Hydra moisturiser. I really love this, it's light, almost gel like and unlike LRP Effaclar , which is often recommended for spots, it's not drying and your skin doesn't feel tight after using it.

This regime keeps our skin clear, but if one does appear, salicylic acid is great for spot zapping but be careful with it, it's pretty harsh on young skin. I dab it just on the spot with a cotton bud it at night and it works like magic overnight.

I like these. I think they’re kid friendly too.

We've been using cerave foaming cleanser and moisturiser for the spots on my 11y/o DD's forehead, plus Ren on the spot treatment, for the past 4 months, plus an organic lavender cleanser. It has cost me a small fortune. Unfortunately it hasn't got it under control and the breakouts just keep coming. This week we bit the bullet and saw a GP who prescribed Epiduo. Really hoping it works as her forehead is so bumpy. Apparently the forehead is where tweens get hormonal breakouts and it's very difficult to control with over the counter treatments. Good luck!

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/04/2021 21:14

Thanks @BlueStargazer but sorry to hear that your tween and mine may be in the same hormonal boat.

I'm really hoping starting this early means it will be over more quickly.

@MrsTerryPratchett I know, they seem
So young but hopefully that means it will clear up sooner rather than later! It's been quite a difficult few months trying to get it under control and I really thought that a strict skincare routine would suffice but sadly it hasn't. I'd be happy to keep you posted on how she gets on with the Epiduo if that would help. Good luck

BrilliantBetty · 10/04/2021 21:20

Clinique's Anti-blemish range helped me a lot, they do a 3-step skin care range and some make up specially for spotty skin. But honestly for me, at that age, it was hormonal.

The above helped my teenage skin but I didn't have clear skin until going on the pill aged 16. And even then the occasional spot, which sodocrem would sooth. Few years on and I have nice skin finally but it wasn't easy in my teens, got spotty from 10 too.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/04/2021 21:25

Thanks @BlueStargazer that would be kind.

I thought about Clinique @BrilliantBetty but the reviews online weren't stellar. I liked it in my teens though.
