Rain water & natural curls

InsideNumberNine · 09/04/2021 13:37

Got caught in the rain earlier when my hair was still a bit damp (I'd been in the shower) and my hair went beautifully curly as opposed to frizzy/patchy curls.

Does this happen to anyone else? Has anyone ever used rain water instead of product to create curls??

Not quite the same but if I wash and let my hair air dry it curls beautifully, can never blow dry it to the same level of curls

fairydustandpixies · 09/04/2021 13:43

I always let my curly hair dry naturally. If I use a hairdryer I end up looking like a dandelion!

OpusAnglicanum · 09/04/2021 13:58

Something to do with the softness of the water, maybe?

My hair is lovely and soft when I’m home in the Highlands, and much less manageable when I’m in London.

Mine does exactly the same. I was at a conference once and went out for a walk at lunchtime as did many others. The heavens opened while we were out. When we got back I rubbed the water off with paper towels and left my hair to it. While everyone else was bemoaning their rats' tails mine went amazingly wavy and soft and curly. And I live in a soft water area, so it's not that. I could never get the same effect with tap water. I reckon it's something to do with the way the rain falls on your hair.

If your hair goes super curly in the rain then you have the most amazing curls , you just need to learn to control them . Do you use product ? What is your styling regime?

I have curly hair and get a similar effect from using a plant mister Grin

Like others, I have to air dry. Hair dryers just cause frizz.

I've tried that, and still don't get the same effect as being rained on. Which is why when it's raining and everyone else is under hats or umbrellas I'm happily exposing my head to the elements.

crispinglovershighkick · 09/04/2021 15:38

Distilled water does it too.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/04/2021 15:40

I have coily hair and rain makes mine a frizzy rats nest because i have broken hair and each strand wants to curl and coil at the same time.

PickAChew · 09/04/2021 15:42

Rain water doesn't do mine any harm but wind absolutely trashes it.

LadyCatStark · 09/04/2021 15:44

Rain makes my hair curl beautifully too and gives DS perfect ringlets (although this is not so appealing to an 11 year old boy!)

Polkadotties · 09/04/2021 15:47

Rain water and also being in a high humidity gives me lovely curls. I always air dry anyway but getting caught in rain or being on holiday does lovely things to my hair

BlankTimes · 09/04/2021 16:00

My mother told me that in wartime it used to be a thing to have a rainwater barrel outside and to use that for your final hair-rinse if you had the same type of hair the OP has. Definitely not if it just made it frizz.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 09/04/2021 16:05

We went swimming in a lake in Snowdonia one time and my curls were so soft and seperated like corkscrews ive never had that since.
A rain barrel is a great idea. but cold!

WrinklesShminkles · 09/04/2021 18:10

This happened to me once. I thought it was to do with being unable to dry my hair with a towel, so it air dried from soaking wet and curled as a result. Not very practicable day to day though!

VanillaAndOrange · 09/04/2021 20:46

My hair behaves exactly like yours and I also usually air dry. I've often deliberately gone out in the rain to try to activate my curls, but I've never come up with a good way of gathering rain water to use indoors.

LittlestBoho · 09/04/2021 21:41

Yes, it's a known thing. You can also use the water that comes out of the dehumidifier. I can't collect rainwater here because my garden is snail central. Sad

InsideNumberNine · 10/04/2021 08:08

I do get a lot of curl underneath my hair when I air dry, but the top layers stay quite frizzy. This is getting better as i haven't really used heat on my hair for a year now. But I still don't get the effect I do with rainwater. I'm considering collecting it and using it like a mister. Alternatively, if I could just use a product, it would be a lot easier!!!

Use a product , curly hair needs product !

Landlubber2019 · 10/04/2021 08:19

I used to spray my hair with water from the water butt, it was always brilliant!

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 10/04/2021 08:24

I have natural curls, wash every day, never use a hairdryer and never have it straight. Just comb when wet put in a bit of product and leave. However I have said for years that my hair is at peak curliness when it's clean and dry but then I get caught in the rain.

It doesn't work when my hair is already wet for some reason.

ExJasper · 10/04/2021 10:14

My hair is curly/wavy too but rainwater has the opposite effect on me - makes my hair frizzy and slightly greasy feeling for some reason.
