Over forties skin - do you use powder to keep your foundation and blusher on?

Just that really, I use sunscreen, primer and foundation but nothing seems to stay on my face all day. I've moved away from a matt foundation as it was highlighting my fine lines. The lady at the Boots makeup counter was saying I still needed to use powder to help keep my foundation on and for blusher to sit on top of. I'm not keen, what do others do?

Wow! Totally mixed views, I'll experiment with powder and no power whilst still working from home and see how it goes.

No powder here for at least 10 years! (I’m 44). I don’t even wear foundation any more as I find it ageing and I need to reapply sun cream a few times a day.

So serums, sun cream, bit of concealer under eyes and round the nose. I use either a cream blusher or bronzer liquid. So nothing powdery!

VanGoghsDog · 06/04/2021 14:17

I use - sun cream, primer, BB cream, powder over nose and forehead and just a bit up cheekbones. Buff it on. I don't use blusher though.

I do also have a setting spray.

OysterMonkey · 06/04/2021 14:20

I’ve always used powder - applied lightly with a brush.
I’m not a fan of the dewy look.

GCAcademic · 06/04/2021 14:22

@CovidCorvid

I use a setting spray.
Same.
lazylinguist · 06/04/2021 14:37

Yes, I always have, because I look too shiny without. I'm 49, but I don't have dry skin and have barely any fine lines. Not all powders make you look dry or cakey. I use Max Factor Miracle Veil, which has a very slight, barely noticeable shimmer to it, which is quite flattering.

Powder for T zone when young and hormonal, now moisturizer liquid foundation, liquid blush and a sweep with bronzer

Housewife2010 · 06/04/2021 15:49

I'm in my prime, have dry skin and have always used powder. I use a very light dusting of Hourglass powder with a large fluffy brush.

Geamhradh · 06/04/2021 17:30

It depends on the powder as to whether it ages or not. A cheap (powder is one of few products I think it's worth spending on) compact pressed powder is not going to be fine milled and yes, if you're not careful you'll look like Barbara Cartland. But a fine milled loose or even pressed just makes your skin look natural, yet better. Bobbi Brown Nude Illuminating pressed powder for example is probably the best I've used.
Clinique Gentle Light loose was definitely the best till the feckers discontinued it.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/04/2021 17:32

Yes

RampantIvy · 06/04/2021 17:36

No. I'm 62 nd find that less is more. On the rare occasion that I wear foundation these days I find that it doesn't need powder. I have combination skin BTW.

GintyMcGinty · 06/04/2021 17:40

I never wear make up but it seems even more pointless at the moment.

Beetlewing · 06/04/2021 17:47

Same as covidcorvid I switched to setting spray

HollyBollyBooBoo · 06/04/2021 17:49

Nope, use setting spray for oily skin. Some before foundation and some when you've put all your make up on.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 06/04/2021 17:54

I could be odd but I've abandoned the lot. No moisturiser, foundation or powder. It all just made me look slimy and sweaty after about 35. I just wash my face with soap.

My skin looks pretty good, I think. It's soft and supple. I don't look visibly wrinklier than my peers.

Imtoooldforallthis · 06/04/2021 17:56

If you can find it I would recomend trying laura geller balance n glow. I is my holy grail product. I'm 56 and wear it every day over bb cream or the ordinary serum foundation. Or in holiday on bare skin. Applied with a large kabuki brush and buffed quite well.

Imtoooldforallthis · 06/04/2021 18:02

In fact qvc have it in stock so you can try it and return if you don't like it.

fightingSmiths · 06/04/2021 19:08

Oh, I have up on all that. I focus on skincare instead. I use hyaluronic acid, moisturiser and sun block. Iook a million times better than having skin caked over with foundation/powder etc. I just find it is really aging - not just on me but also on my friends who are of similar age. Maybe we are all doing it wrong but I doubt that.

Delatron · 06/04/2021 20:31

Me too. I used to spend ages in my 20s putting make up on for a night out.
Now I use some kind of device like a radio frequency or micro current. Then a face mask. Then serums, spf and finish with a primer and a bit of concealer. So spend ages trying to make my actual skin look good as covering it up doesn’t seem to work that well anymore. I do eyebrows and mascara though.

thethoughtfox · 06/04/2021 20:52

Setting spray. It's a game changer. I use a teeny bit of Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush powder on shiny bits/ under mask bits and the Skindinavia Bridal Setting Spray. Make up is perfect all day even under a mask.

Anotheruser02 · 06/04/2021 21:38

Can someone recommend a brand of setting spray please?

buckeejit · 06/04/2021 21:48

Really rec the by Terry hyaluronic powder. Sets without being powdery & is just fab.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/04/2021 23:02

Another vote for By Terry. I just use it in my nose and forehead.

BeaLola · 06/04/2021 23:50

The By Terry is fab - lasts for ages & ages - I use a minuscule amount and quick swipe with on T Zone

I have hourglass dim - I wouldn't rebuy

Have just received the Dior new one - can't recall name but cones in cushioned compact and 3 variations - I was given lavender / interested to see how it compares

Urban Decay All Nighter is a good one.
