Do you pick out your outfit the day before?

I rarely do this and as a result I think it has contributed to rushed choices which are not always flattering....

How long do you spend deciding on what to wear and do you decide the day before or on the day?

Thanks

I don’t do this as even if I pick an outfit in advance, on the day I might not be feeling it. I can find an outfit I wore on Tuesday doesn’t feel the same on Thursday. It is a lot of work though, particularly as I never wear the same outfit twice, always a different permutation.

Ninkanink · 06/04/2021 09:11

I am the same - very mood-driven when it comes to outfits. But I always found that if I didn’t want to wear the outfit I had planned, I always knew what was the right outfit for the day, so it really didn’t take long to switch the items out.

thirstyformore · 06/04/2021 09:37

Handbag, shoes and jewellery would also change depending on outfit/weather etc. Would get it all out night before and hang up in bedroom.

In my mind I'd also decide which coat I would wear!

FourTurnings · 06/04/2021 10:17

During the working week, yes, always. Even down to the jewellery. It saves time in the morning and also stress.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/04/2021 10:36

I’ve always put my outfit together the night before - I hang it in the bathroom so it’s just shower and dress. I am awful in the mornings so would be going to work in my pyjamas otherwise!

hangryeyes · 06/04/2021 13:30

I did this when I was going into the office, actually quite miss doing it now!

I would usually pick out roughly a week’s worth of outfits, that way if I changed my mind about an outfit on a certain day I had other options or if one day I needed to be smarter I had everything I needed ready.
I find it tough to make decisions first thing in the morning or I’d spend ages looking for something half asleep and not be able to find it.
I also used more of my accessories and if I needed to change bag/coat etc I had that all sorted rather than rushing.

Having work clothes that generally mix and match helps too. I tend to wear dresses and tights or 7/8 trousers and a top and then style it up... did I mention I miss getting ready for the office?! Wink

Thanks for all of your responses! I am definitely making changes going forward. Planning is the way to go for meGrin

I do but only in my head. I basically go through what I know is clean and decide what I’m wearing, usually just as I’m about to fall asleep. I certainly don’t go through pulling clothes out and laying them out, at the most I might open my draws and wardrobes to check what’s in there or what’s in the clean washing pile or on the maiden so I know what’s available to wear, but that’s it.

dudsville · 06/04/2021 21:48

I don't, but I do have reminders on some hangers regarding what to wear with that particular item.

stealingbeauty · 06/04/2021 22:00

No, I don’t. I’m another person who has a small capsule wardrobe, so it’s always easy to put an outfit together.

Dreamponytail · 06/04/2021 23:07

Yes for work outfits (when going to the office) as time is short in the mornings.

Yes when the weather is changeable/between seasons as needing a coat or different shoes can throw the choice. If I've planned a maxi dress and sandals and then it's chilly and rains I'd need a short coat and/or boots or to change the dress.

No if it's just an ordinary day. I have a standard collection of standby items which I have enough of to always have hanging up clean and ready to wear. A few smock dresses to wear with leggings or tights, t shirts and jumpers to wear with jeans.

Finding a comfortable bra and buying 8 of them has really helped the most as I have a clean bra ready to go every day. Same for multiple knickers/tights/leggings/jeans (none of these expensive, all are supermarket buys but nice) so there's never a hunt for basics. Once you have all underwear constantly clean and ready in drawers, and standby leggings/jeans then you're 3/4 dressed already, so it's not hard to throw on a t shirt or jumper or tunic.

Always
I vary between next day, a few days, and a whole week!
Often on a Sunday evening I will choose 1/2 a week or a full week of outfit choices then Thursday or Friday will choose my weekend wear

Yes, I find I just don't know what I'm going to want to wear tomorrow! However, I do have a few things that I will almost always wear for work - black trousers, one of 2 silver necklaces, small silver earrings, and I use the same workbag every day that holds any spares I might need, make-up, lanyard , extra layer etc. So it's usually a case of deciding what top/jumper/jacket/scarf. I choose that mostly lying in bed, looking out the window to see the weather.
MadMadMadamMim · 07/04/2021 00:26

I do this for work. It's a blessed relief to have tomorrow's outfit picked out and hung on the wardrobe door, with underwear, shoes, etc ready to go.

I found on days when I didn't do this that I was like a teenage girl getting ready for a date. I'd be frantically trying everything in the wardrobe on, deciding it looked shit and discarding it. I'd then feel rushed and stressed commuting to work, and unconvinced I actually looked ok.

And then you come home knackered to a bedroom like a bombsite. 😁

@DorisLessingsCat

I’ve been trying to get into Pinterest for wardrobe planning. I have found I rather like a chic “Parisian” style (yes, how cliche!) and have been pinning photos of outfits I like that show pieces similar to ones I own and organising them according to that piece, iyswim. If I wake up knowing I want to wear, for example, a blazer, I go to that board for ideas.

I’d love to hear how you organise your photos of your clothes, and any other tips you can share on using Pinterest for outfit planning.

sugarlost · 07/04/2021 20:01

Do most of you have lots of wardrobe space?
I've done a clear out following my post and your responses which has been really helpful and motivatingGrin

What footwear do you wear in the summer? I struggle finding comfortable sandels.
Nice footwear can really compliment a outfit...I often feel frumpy because of limited choices. I can also only wear flats. I need supportive shoes.
I find winter boots/ trainers easier to find for footwear.

I keep up to date with the weather for changing coat/shoes as PP mentioned..the things we have to do lol

Pre covid, i planmed my work week's outfits on Sunday in advance and hang them in order (including appropriate underwear). I had a really early start though!

I don't do the pinning of other lovely stuff - too depressing because my clothes and body are not as lovely!

I have 4 clothes boards - work, casual, summer and party. There's no particular organisation, I just take pictures of my clothes and put them on my boards. I do group by dresses/tops/trousers etc. I have separate boards for shoes and jewellery.

Thanks @DorisLessingsCat 🙏

Like @AliceMcK I do it in my head when I'm going to sleep. I usually block out two options: One for if I'm feeling thin, and one for if I'm feeling bloated. Grin

I use the same handbag every day for work. It's a nice, minimalist hobo/tote in beige, brown, and black, with an interesting knot strap, so it goes with anything I wear. I bought it for exactly that reason.

For shoes, I began my new job with an array of stylish ballet flats and minimalist mules with thin soles, but after a couple of weeks I was in a lot of pain, so now I'm wearing chunky DM-esque sandals in beige. I've also just ordered the Zara buckled leather clog sandals and another Zara pair of chunky sandals with a sort of woven detail. I'm less excited about them so can't remember their proper title.

I have a small selection of silver hoop type earrings for work. I usually wear the same pair every day though. Then, for make-up, the same eyeshadow and mascara every morning, kept next to the mirror. Takes me about twenty minutes to get ready, from dressing gown and mad hair to being able to walk out the door.

NCforthisconvo · 09/04/2021 20:22

I do put my clothes ready out for the next day, a) because I don’t like hunting for stuff when I have to get myself and my boys out of the house on time b) I have processing issues so it keeps me in line.

My Monday to Friday outfits are very easy though in spring/autumn/winter because I work with 3-4 and usually wear jeans, men’s T-shirt (for the longer length) and old(er) trainers during the day and change into black joggers and vest top when I get home. Weekends is usually jeans and a nicer top at the mo, with some all white trainers. Tan bag for weekends, small rucksack for work.

I had another massive sort out over winter because I knew I wouldn’t wear any of my decent clothes in my current role.
I hate my legs so I’ll be in leggings and longer length tunics over for summer with trainers during the week and weekends I’ll wear longer length dresses paired with sandals from Next, Office or Clarks. I have arthritis so need support and to be able to run after my own kids.

SausageDogSandwich · 09/04/2021 20:29

Not at the moment because my work has changed but I did used to put together five or so outfits so that I didn't have to mess about in the morning. It does make life easier.

VanillaAndOrange · 09/04/2021 20:39

Normally no. There are 1 or 2 days a week (it's a 2-week rota) when I need to leave for work very early and I try to remember to put something out the night before, including clothes, jewellery and make-up. I would say about a third of the time I end up happy with what I chose, a third of the time it doesn't feel quite right but I wear it anyway, and the other third I end up changing at least one element of it. When I don't have to plan in advance I have a much better "strike rate" because I know what to wear right then.

BackforGood · 09/04/2021 20:39

I've always got things ready the night before, but not from a 'style dilemma' pov, but more like @Shehasadiamondinthesky on P1 - I don't function that well first thing in the morning. I'd rather hever that extra 3 or 4 minutes sleep.
However, I've always done it for my dc wen they were little too - from having the pram bag all ready in the hall the night before, to all phases where I was still dressing any of them. If you get your clothes out the night before and find a dirty mark on something or that it never made it out of the washing pile, you have a chance to do something about it the night before. When you have 5 mins to get out the door, you don't.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 09/04/2021 20:39

Yes, complete outfit including underwear, jewellery and shoes. Even when I am WFH I still get my clothes out ready. I also get my gym kit out which encourages me to exercise before work. It's sounds a bit sad but it seems to save so much time.
