How to get clothes completely clean without ruining them?

I’ve recently bought a couple of hoodies & tshirts from Jack Wills. Really pleased as they fit me well & are comfy. When I’ve washed the grey one at 40 degree wash as it says, I find it doesn’t get it fully clean. Cuffs can get a bit dirty & sometimes a bit of make up around neck, doesn’t fully come out. Come to think of it it’s probably the same with alot of my lighter clothes but never been that bothered before.

I’m trying to buy less clothes now but better quality & I want them to stay looking nice. What’s the best way to get things really properly clean? I’m worried about increasing the temperature in case they shrink.
I use Persil liquid non-bio - is there something better I could try? Thanks

I blame modern washing machines. They don't use enough water. You used to see the clothes sloshing about in loads of bubbly water - now they just splat about on the sides of the machine for an hour or two.

I was going to say that about bio and non bio, the uk is one of the only countries that does this. Where I live it’s bio for everything, even baby organic blah blah powder is bio.

You need longer washes. Our standard wash on cottons is almost 3hrs. The eco setting takes 50mins. The reason it’s the eco setting is that is used far less water which is what’s needed for dirty clothing. I only use the quick washes or eco for general freshening up clean ish clothing.

The cotton 60 degrees washes our babies nappies every other day, with just regular Persil bio powder. Almost a year of washing ( and pooping) later, and the nappies are still white

I use Vanish spray only, knock offs don't work. Scoop of washing soda crystals and bio powder. I wash at 30 and dry outside when possible.

Shaving foam removes make up stains.
