Has anybody really simplified their skin care routine?

Please come and tell me about it. I would like to be one of those women who had the dedication to apply multiple products, and know exactly what each one was doing. That isn't going to happen, unless I stop being so lazy have a personality transplant. I can cope with cleanse, moisturise, eye cream, night cream, exfoliator, weekly mask and an all singing/dancing serum, but that seems to be it. Anyone gone from a more complex routine, simplified it, and found their face hasn't fallen off? Maybe including a better serum or magical moisuriser? TIA.

My skin is better with less product. I use miscellar water to remove make up, plain water to cleanse and tone. I use a moisturiser as and when I need it, sometimes Aldi Lacura, sometimes Dr Haushka rose cream. If it's really dry I use and oil like Weleda Almond oil or Guerlain watery youth oil. I drink water and wear suncream.

Tale as old as time but upping my water intake has done FAR more for my skin than any products have ever done

RealisticSketch · 02/04/2021 18:48

Your skin grows from the inside out so the top layers are the least pivotal in terms of how it looks, good diet, being well hydrated and sleeping well make far more difference than anything else, if that isn't there all the creams in the world aren't going to recover the quality of your skin.
I wash and moisturise. I look at least as good if not better than others my age (in terms of wrinkles, sagging etc). I kind of also wish I understood other skin care options better but I still haven't got round to altering my habits and as time goes by I see the point less and less given I'm not falling behind my peers in appearance.

I don't do anything at all and never have done.
I jump in the shower and wash my face then.
I rarely wear any foundation but if I do I'll just wash it off with a flannel ... maybe a little soap. Eye make up has usually all but disappeared by bedtime but if not I use Nivea eye makeup remover.

Twoforthree · 02/04/2021 19:03

I use eye make up remover to clean my eyes the next morning. Other than that I only use water and the occasional bit of body lotion on my face, when I'm moisturizing my legs(which I really need to do).

I was falling down the rabbit hole of multi-step skincare but tbh most products don't have anywhere near the amount of actives needed to make a difference. I just reduced how much makeup I was wearing and went to AM) shower face wash followed by LRP Effaclar Duo and then PM) cleansing oil followed by hot flannel and soap. Slap a bit of serum on before bed. Fewer spots!

I cleared out a drawer recently and found tonnes of minis and samples so I've vowed not to spend another penny until I've used up every single thing. I'm going to take notes and everything.

But (and I've said this before on here) I really think it's the 'shock' of new products that makes a difference. My skin never looks better than a week into a new 'thing'.

Just water in the morning followed by L’Oréal moisturiser (cheap range). In the warmer months I’ll wear a separate SPF.

At night - cheapie face wash and L’Oreal night moisturiser (also cheap).

I generally keep out of the sun (or wear hats) and don’t drink alcohol.

travailtotravel · 02/04/2021 19:45

I'm using stuff up. But my stripped back routine is balm cleanser, moisturise pm. Am moisturise after shower. SPF in summer. Pointless in winter as when WAH I don't go out!

debka · 02/04/2021 19:48

I wash with water, then Aveeno in the morning.
That's it.
Sunspray if I go for a run.
I'm 41 and my skin is great.
I do eat well, and drink plenty of water though.

travailtotravel · 02/04/2021 19:49

Genuinely used to spend £££. I don't believe it made a blind bit of difference. I switched to supermarket brands at the start of lockdown so have tried Olay (the really cheap stuff), some Loreal lavender stuff and some nivea stuff. All have had the same results for me as anything else I tried.

Tanfastic · 02/04/2021 19:49

I used to do all the cleansing, toning, moisturising.
But haven't bothered for years.

I now just Use cheapo facial wipes, moisturiser with spf. That's it. I'm 47 hardly have any wrinkles really (yet!).

I do the occasional face mask.

LauristonLane · 02/04/2021 20:01

I had increased my use of lotions and potions but having realised I was spending about £60 per month I've reduced down.
Now I cleanse ( no 7), moisturise (anything on offer) and have subscribed to a monthly tube of cream from Dermatica.
My large pores have just about gone, I now have fresh looking,clear-skin.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 02/04/2021 20:05

This is all really interesting everyone, thanks. Anyone got any recomendations for stand alone SPF? I've seen Soltan mentioned...is that a specific face one, or whack it all over version? :)

I use to moisturise face once out the shower/bath.

Now I just about remember to splash some water on it in the bath/shower.

The end. Very simplified! My face hasn't fallen off, it's not dreadful, or amazing for that matter! Don't wear make up as never go "out" anymore!

Vierty · 02/04/2021 20:39

Water and a bit of moisturiser. My skin is great. Purposely not suggested a skincare routine to my teen and she has amazing skin

Twoforthree · 03/04/2021 16:26

Eucerin I mean

lazylinguist · 03/04/2021 16:39

I use all Aldi stuff. Their Cleanse and Polish dupe to get make-up off, then wash with soap and water. Q10 serum and day/night moisturisers. I used to use more expensive brands. It makes no difference!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 03/04/2021 17:35

Thanks everyone. Thanks @Twoforthree.
